I just moved to Minnesota; this state is easily the best place I've ever lived. The state park and trail system is amazing - you can easily walk/bike from any corner of the state to any other corner of the state on a paved trail. There's parks everywhere and lakes everywhere, which means that just about everyone has their own lake where they go boating/do summer stuff. The winters suck, but Minnesota summers are outstanding. Also: the Twin Cities are the most literate cities in the United States, and big enough economically that you get the full compliment of amenities and entertainment you would get if you lived somewhere bigger like Chicago.

Little context re: WA State income tax. Every state has a constitution, and for the most part they're all the same. Washington's Constitution has two particularly unique things though. That property is not taxed (and I'm rusty on that interpretation, w/o the will to look into it rn), and that every child has a right to education- no exceptions (race, ethnicity, income, immigration status, etc). The former has been interpreted for years now to mean that income is not taxable. It's one of 3(?) states with this particular rule. There is a lot of pressure from locals now, to change this as the wealth gap has increased (Bill Gates (Microsoft) *and* Jeff Bezos (Amazon) have both made livings here, for example). As the rich have driven prices up (rich people don't poop or eat any more than the average human, for example), the lower / middle class struggle to keep up. It is also a state that relies heavily on sales taxes in tourism, due to not taxing income. Any movement to tax income would have to get through the state's Supreme Court however. It's one of the hot debates here in Washington. The court has also made big moves in the last decade or so, to balance the law (and interpreting the law fairly and consistently) with bringing justice to people w/o the means (money) to lobby or advocate for themselves. Lots of really interesting debate going on here, that will surely set some precedence for the future. I certainly have views on this but I've tried to keep this context somewhat generic and plain. Really interesting stuff though. Previous steel states that exploded in previous eras, for different reasons, are certainly enduring different challenges today. And *now*, it's very intriguing to live in a state that is very relevant in 2021 economically/industrially. For a lot of progress that's been made on human rights, justice, etc, there's still a lot more work that people are advocating for. But at what costs in the short term, to smaller businesses or housing costs, etc. Pretty interesting.

Property tax - tax on car sales tax, tags, and home tax - most of this money is in General funds allowing for schools and policing 5. Gas tax - like your VAT.. what you see you pay. Its added in price. State governor can raise if need additional funds. Usually abt 1-4 cents more than cost per gallon. 5. Sales tax - it varies from City to city. Usually around 6-13 cents per dollar. This is what mayors of towns use for budgets. 6.Some Large city - charge city taxes that come out of your wages. So we are tax poor!!!

Have lived all over the country, but my favorite isn't on the list: Montana. Montana is colder than Minnesota, winters are much more brutal and long-lasting, but it's absolutely beautiful. There are few people, and wide-open spaces. Cost of living is generally much cheaper as well. I can get grass fed Montana beef for a quarter the price of beef in MN. Takes a bit of toughness to live in some areas of Montana which is why I think it is as sparse as it is, but is easily worth it. In my area of Montana, we don't use any salt on the roads in winter, which makes driving and navigating more of a bear compared to easier to drive places like MN. I always laugh hearing Minnesotans complain about how harsh their winters are, clearly they have not experienced a real Montana winter. Example: My house in MT has had snow since middle of September. Apartment in MN has a temperature of almost 70 degrees! Cabin in northern MN had a little sleet last week and everyone started freaking out! In MN, you can get by with a light undershirt, medium jacket, and simple Merrell shoes. Easy breezy!

For Mike, there is a federal income tax that everyone pays, but the various states have different taxes on top of that. Some states rely heavily on the sales tax which is like a VAT. But some states have an additional income tax on top of the federal income tax, and some have both a state sales and state income taxes. It creates some interesting incentives and competition between states for business. I once lived in Tennessee where there was a high sales tax (@8-9%) but no income tax. Tennessee borders Virginia which had a 4% sales tax and an income tax. So in Bristol Tennessee/Virgina, which is a divided city between two states, the automobile dealerships used to set up shop on the Virginia side of the city because a customer could save 4-5% on the cost of a car simply by being on the opposite side of the street in a different state.

During winter, it would regularly range between -20 to 0 deg F (-29 to -17.8 deg C). Most of the time though, winter lows where I grew up range from 0 to 28 deg F (-17.8 to -2.2 deg C). Summer highs in my home county are normally in the 70s to 80s F, occasionally in the 90s F.

So, Mike asked about taxes: we are all subject to US Federal (national) income tax, and in addition, many states also have their own income tax (on top of the Federal). So, Tennessee has no income tax and Kentucky has no income tax, but Ohio does. And Kentucky taxes "personal property" instead, so in Ohio we have a flat fee to register our car every year, but in Kentucky that fee is actually scaled to the value of the car, because it's on property value. In addition, some cities also add their own income taxes on top of the state and Federal ones. So it can add up, for sure.

So basically with state income tax; some states tax your income on top of the taxes you pay federally. Not all states have the same rate of income taxation, Colorado for example has a flat tax at 4.6%, whereas California has a progressive tax rate that goes up to 12% tax if you’re a high income earner. But if you go north of Colorado into Wyoming they don’t have any state income tax at all. In states without an income tax you just pay your federal taxes when you file.
@tykroner11333 жыл бұрын
LOL at you guys for thinking California will be up there as a best state to live in. There’s a massive exodus of people leaving due to its regulations, high taxes, and skyrocketing homelessness. Venice Beach, a huge tourist attraction, is now flooded with tents and makeshift homes. It’s a beautiful place to visit and vacation, but to live, that’s a whole other story. I have friends and family that currently live there, or used to live there, and almost all of them say the same thing. It’s really a sad sight to see considering how gorgeous, geographically, the state is overall.

My criteria for selection of those side roads? Any road that doesn't have a painted divider stripe in the middle. That is how you REALLY "see the country". The GPS will, continue to "point you in the right direction" so you never REALLY get lost and EVENTUALLY you'll get to where you want to get....... EVENTUALLY.

And it gives the impression to people like the blokes that those hoods don’t exist in these states. I just want there to be a clearer understanding in helping those overseas understand America fully.

No mention of weather. The upper East Coast has shit weather IMO - high humidity makes for bitter winters, with snow that sticks around for months, and hot muggy summers. Same for Minnesota. Washington rains 3/4 of the year. By contrast, Colorado gets over 300 days of sunshine every year. Something to be said for culture too. Compare the boredom of Nebraska with the culture of NYC. There is a reason NYC has so many people (so many want to live there), it's because of the culture.. entertainment, food, everything.

Interesting video, but questionable list. Sure, some parameters that he listed are correct, but you need more context, and of course, there is always personal choice. But the weather, that's a big factor to consider. Seriously, I'd never live in a place like Texas. Have you ever been to Austin in the Summer? It's so hot, you can barely breathe! I'd never live in Minnesota for the opposite reason. The charm of small towns in the North East? Sure, it's ok, but you'll get tired of it if you want some fun and entertainment. Florida? There is a reason why it's always in the news. Idaho? Creepy and cold... the list continues. Honestly, I've been all over the US, and the top place should have been Colorado. It's not too big, not too small, there is art and culture, nature is beautiful, it's generally safe compared to other areas in the US, people are nice, the economy is booming. CO is just the best place to live in the US. Second place goes to Washington. It shares a lot of pros that CO has, nature is majestic, climate not as awesome, but it's a great place overall. Third place, I'd put New York. And honestly, I wouldn't want to live in any other place in the US, I'd rather move to Europe.

Everyone pays federal income taxes (unless you're rich) but each state raises money from some combination of three tax sources - income, sales and property taxes. I live in Washington, no income tax but a base state sales tax of 7.8% with local governments adding to that. Oregon, next door, has no sales tax but does have a state income tax.
