The only thing that matches the natural beauty, is mother nature. Our weather is incredible, I have went from 70 degrees and sunny, to 20 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground in one day. To me the the 3 most beautiful states in America is Oregon, Montana and South Dakota. Colorado would be number 4. One of the great things about Portland, Oregon, is the accessibility to the different biomes. You can find virtually any clime within an hour and a half's drive. Further and you can find more isolated spots, though parks are only crowded close to Portland or the northern coast. If you get deep into the Cascades, it's easy to go without seeing anyone. @@frankfroggatt8593 Portland has always been the place for people who don't belong. Long heritage, waves and waves of the dispossessed for going on seven decades. The old wave feels replaced by a new wave of immigrants, and the older folks move to Eugene (or Bend, now, too). And then a similar thing happens with people moving from Eugene to Ashland, these days Medford, too. Portland used to be one of the hotspots for retired expat espionage agents from around the world, back when the Willamette Valley was among the most educated places on the planet. Portland is still the home of the otherwise dispossessed, but we forgot who we were for awhile, growing into our bigger city dynamic and focussing on business and tourism. Portlandia, the TV show, really confused everyone about who we are -- especially the native born, who rarely fare well here because they grow up feeling like they don't belong, not knowing that's why people come here. I think we're starting to remember, but the rampant homelessness is a key sign that we don't fully remember ourselves yet. Supposed to be, there's at least space here for those who don't belong, if not full acceptance. Just came back and looked at this video again. As someone from the very wet east coast, I have to say I love the Southwest desert. I've visited New Mexico a number of times, and I found the desert landscape to be beautiful in its own stark way. Very different from what I'm used to, but very appealing.

I am in Spokane, WA. We are in Eastern Washington, opposite of Seattle. We do have to travel through the mountains to get to Seattle, about a 4 hour drive. The pass going to Seattle was actually shut down for several days because of a major snow dump. I believe Seattle gets snow, but not very often or much. Spokane snows more than rains during the winter. Usually just an inch to three when it does snow. But we do get quite a bit too. I believe Spokane is the 2nd largest city in Washington, it might be the 3rd

I'm actually going to Alaska later this year. Anchorage seems like a pretty good hub for restaurants, bars, other "city" things, so it's not all small town and wilderness, even if that's the main reason people visit. I'll be there a week and have a pretty good balance of things planned. Can be pricey though.

The east coast forests were a lot prettier 150 years ago, before we lost all the Chestnut and Elm trees from the forests. The chestnuts alone made up 25-35% of the canopy, and were 100 feet tall. At one time the lyrics "Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..." recalled experiences many Americans had enjoyed. The American Chestnut was the east coast version of Redwoods, but were far more common. They were all wiped out (except a few tiny pockets) by a blight introduced from China (no covid jokes).
@nancysexton43642 жыл бұрын
You reminded me, I grew up in Michigan and my parents told me Detroit used to known as "The City of Trees." Unfortunately they were mainly elm trees, so Detroit was essentially deforested. We also had a huge elm tree in our back yard that ultimately died as well. Apparently there's a cure for Dutch Elm disease now, but too late for a lot of places.
@MrVvulf2 жыл бұрын
@@nancysexton4364 There are quite a few organizations working to create a blight resistant Chestnut. Various methods are used, but most involve cross breeding with species that are already resistant to the blight. Hopefully, they'll succeed in creating a viable Chestnut species that can be reintroduced to our forests. But nobody alive today will ever experience a forest with widespread mature chestnuts. Perhaps my grandchildren or later generations. It's worth the effort. Of course, there are whack-job protestors who equate this process to mad scientists risking all of our lives. Which is completely preposterous, and ignores the fact that humans have been influencing both plant and animal genetics for thousands of years. Where do these people think all the different dog breeds and seedless grapes etc. came from?

As a Native Oregonian, I can honestly say I've seen most of the state except SE side. The coast is beautiful and cool, the mountains-and we have lots around us- are majestic. Mt Hood is one of the only mountains in the states to have year round snow. The eastern side of the state is smaller towns with larger farm lands where you'll get all 4 seasons, while the west side is full of bigger towns and more green. If you go down. Funny fact you can travel from Newport Oregon across the country to Boston Mass on US Route 20. And Leavenworth is a beautiful place to visit especially in the winter. It becomes like Santa's village.

Since Thursday you could not drive from Seattle to Spokane because all 3 mountain passes are closed with Snoqualmie Pass might open today , Sunday because of too much snow. I live just West of Mt Rainier by bird maybe 15 miles 25 to drive. My view from the couch is tree tops and the top 3/4 of Rainier which is snow capped year round. Their is a trail for you it starts at the Mexican Border in California ends at the Canadian Border in Washington 2650 miles.

You boys crack me up. Alaska cities have microbrewery's that make some of the best beer in the US. In Anchorage you can go to a symphony or concert, and find 40 drinking establishments within walking distance and some of the best restaurants in the country. In June and July in the interior of the state I have seen it get as warm as 101 F degrees. Here near Anchorage last summer, the whole family came to our lake property to beat the heat and swim in the lake. It was in the 90's F as it usually does every summer.

I’ve been in SE Alaska for many years and can tell you that before you visit you need a plan. They’ve been publishing an annual guide, the Alaska Milepost, that has covered things all over the state for many years. And one visit, unless you’ve got time to burn, will only get you to see a small fraction of the state. And the beauty of this place is not just what’s here, it’s also what’s not here.

OK - here's what I think that you got as the distorted story of California's TV "Ban" In 2011 - California passed a law requiring a certain level of efficiency in new TVs sold within the state - there is no limit as to how big a TV you can buy... but the TV must not use more than x number of watts per square inch of screen area... also, this limit only applies to TVs with a screen that are basically equivalent to a 58 inch screen - or smaller. Clearly the electronics industry has adapted in the last 10 years.
