If the NFL ever placed a team in London, you wouldn't have to draw from local talent (of which there probably isn't any). They would just be part of the NFL draft and you would be picking Alabama players the same as every other team. The problem might arise with US players not wanting to live overseas and particularly a matter of whether big free agent players would find London more appealing than say Dallas or Miami. Overall it just sounds too costly when compared to the returns, unless some very wealthy British businessmen (or Emirates) happen to be huge NFL fans and want to dive in more for a flex than a profit.

American football players fresh out of college ain't living in a foreign country. They'd have to be paid a veteran contract and they'd bounce immediately after the contract. It's a complete non-starter but the NFL already failed with NFL Europe. They should already know. The NFL doesn't need foreign teams. They need the NFL Experience in a stadium like building that would hold 5,000, sell-out every week, serve food and beverages, and these could be built around the world at virtually no cost and no risk. They think in the box which is surprising for a bunch of businessmen.

You could add an NFL team in London if you clustered the away games and simply created an alternative American facility for the team for those games. @@ATLMike94 because within the 16 game schedule a team thats very good at home vs the road can snap a 2 plus losing streak just by getting back to their own field and fans. If you are London and are particularly good ay home well then yoy don't have that chance to break the schedule up and get a much needed win for morale. Its very nuanced but I think that playing 8 away in a row is just way to many games just like 8 In a row at home would be unfair to any NFL team. Then what about the playoffs? If London wins or loses home field advantage teams have to deal with a quick one week turnaround and play at a high level?

The only way it makes sense to expand to the UK is to put 4 or 5 teams in the area so they can have their own division. That would give the teams far more games within England and would give both UK based and American based teams the ability to play road games in back to backs limiting travel. The real fun would be deciding which 5 cites should get a team.

I think the biggest problem with having a team in London would be getting players to play there. Most players in the NBA don't want to play for the Toronto Raptors. Players who do play in Toronto usually insist on being paid in American dollars because it's worth more, which puts the team in a tough place because all their income is in Canadian dollars but they're paying out multi-millions in American dollars that's worth more. Taxes could be a problem also. I don't know what England's laws are on income tax, but I know that if you're a US citizen and you are making money in another country then you have to claim that on your US income tax also. Plus finding players who are willing to move that far away from home would be tough, especially top free agents that will have multiple teams after them, chances are they'd choose to play with a team in their home country.

In the Canadian Premier League, the two clubs furthest apart are Pacific FC (Victoria, BC) and Halifax Wanderers (Halifax, NS). The distance between the two cities is 5,490 km (3,411 mi), and they have to play each other 4 times per season, so both teams will travel 21,960 km round trip just to play each other in a season, in addition to all their other games, plus additional travel for Cup matches.

This is going to sound crazy, but in my opinion the only way for an NFL team in the UK to work is to add 3 other teams globally as well. Perhaps Germany, France and Mexico for example. Then make a division for all 4 teams in either the AFC or NFC calling it the International division. These 4 teams would play each other 2 times then naturally rivalries and storyline could emerge. You'd have to make all 4 teams expansions as you can't move 4 NFL teams at 1 time.

NFL Teams play three Pre-Season games, 17 Regular Season games, and the Playoffs are a 14 team single elimination tournament(top seed in each Conference has a bye). The reason they do not play any more games than this, is the high risk of injury, as it stand approx. 5% of players on a team receive a mild to moderate injury every single game played. With the fact that catastrophic injuries like ACL tears and Concussions are probably over an entire carreer, 20 season and preseason games along with a maximum of four playoff games is the physical limit they can play without unacceptable losses to injury. The one benefit of the 17 game schedule is that teams do not have to give up any of their tradition 8 home games, and as a result there will be 3 games in England, 1 in Munich, and 1 in Mexico City.

The idea of naming the team england over London is a good one. Here in Arizona we have actually gone through that. Both the Cardinals (nfl) and the coyotes (NHL) were originally called the Phoenix cardinals and the Phoenix coyotes. Phoenix was originally what would be a small market. So to make it more inclusive they renamed both teams. First the Cardinals now called the arizona Cardinals. Then the coyotes now the arizona coyotes. Phoenix is now the 5th largest city in the US so they could just be called the Phoenix whatever's. But at the time it was extremely beneficial to both teams to represent the whole state instead of just a city. If any NFL team made the move it would be a good idea to name the team the England whatever's. That way the whole country could get behind them similarly to what they did in Arizona. I believe arizona as a state is even bigger then england so geographically it could totally work. Even if some fans were 2 hours away.

I think is where the uniqueness of American sports fans come in. In regards to following multiple sports on both an amateur and professional level, Americans wouldn't have much of a problem adding another sport to watch. If we add in NCAA sports, Americans also tend to follow NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA and MLS. Nascar is niche, but there are fans who watch that also watch other sports. At the youth level, American kids tend to play multiple sports too. In my childhood, there were numerous kids who played any mixture of baseball, basketball, American football, soccer, volleyball and ice hockey. Add in gymnastics, martial arts, softball, swimming and wrestling too. In terms of non-American sports, rugby union has formed its own league in the likes of Major League Rugby (MLR) in the States. It's growing slowly but steadily, with some organizations building a grassroots culture to focus on youth/community rugby pipeline to high school and then to the national team (Eagles). Though the US may have its staples (American football, baseball) it's exceptionally open-minded to watch and integrate other sports into its sporting landscape - and often times it's for the best, since it either forms a professional league later on (i..e MLS) once it gains enough traction or it produces elite athletes in the form of Olympians (swimming, gymnastics, wrestling, track).

If the NFL puts a team in London, they would probably have to create an entire division in Europe. Maybe Frankfurt Galaxy would come back, put a team in Paris and maybe in Rome, if they could get the fan base. Frankfurt Galaxy still has a pretty big fan base even though they haven't been around in a decade. Rome and Paris would have to bee built up. But another problem would be to even the league out to have 10 divisions. Maybe a Pacific based League, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and they could probably do a team in American Samoa.

Oh, Daz lol. YOUR company definitely had to pay for the aircraft even when it when was on the ground, but ummmm yea. The NFL has a BIT more pull than you. And you got it right, as the video clearly stated. The airlines are ONLY getting paid for when the teams are on them, NOT for the countless hours they sit waiting. It's part of being a league/team sponsor, eating the cost and considering it as part of your advertising.

Plus even if you’re paying for time on the ground, that doesn’t really account for opportunity cost. Airlines can charge more sure, but it doesn’t cover the amount they could have otherwise been making had their planes not been stuck on the ground.

If the NFL expand/relocate to London, British people will see a blitz marketing campaign which will defy belief. Adverts, corporate messaging, player and executive appearances, crossover branding, and partnership with major football clubs from South Hampton to Glasgow will all be in play. It will be a double edged sword. Younger people, frequent travelers to the US, and those disaffected with their own football clubs (we all remember the response to the European Super League) may catch on. Traditionalists, older people, and those who find American glitz and glam to be vulgar and grotesque will reject it. It will be interesting.

I don’t think fans would be taken from other sports. In the U.S., there are overlapping seasons with football, baseball, hockey and basketball along with college sports. People pick and choose what sports they watch, but many people watch and follow many sports. In Boston, many fans are Patriot, Celtic, Red Sox and Bruin fans and if there are competing schedules, people will just choose which to watch or they record games to watch later.

You are describing our experience with soccer/football in this country. Granted Soccer is far more developed in the US but it is shocking when you think MLS is growing because the stadiums are all full but when you go out almost no one follows the sport much less the league.

It's such an insane thought to try to bring the NFL to England or Europe just based on time zones. It's hard enough with 3 different time zones in America, now imagine trying to figure out 8 in terms of TV and advertising money, never the less who the fuck is gonna watch it. The idea itself is all based on Greed.

I think what would make more sense would be perhaps another exploration of NFL Europe. The NFL starting a small league in Europe similar to the XFL or USFL to grow the game and create multiple teams in Europe for people to pull for. And who knows if it gets big enough they might have the champion of NFL Europe play the Super Bowl winner for the International Bowl.

There is no such thing as a small budget in the NFL. He just said “small budget” referring to the Browns and they just shelled out a 230 million dollar contract fully guaranteed and another 100 million dollar contract to Ward. That’s 330 million dollars on 2 players 🤦🏽‍♂️
