@@DigitallyTwistedOutlaws1178 All martial arts, whether it is empty handed combat or the use of weapons, require strength as the foundation. Without sufficient strength, the speed of wielding the katana is not fast enough, and the ability to control the katana is also weak. I heard in Chinese Mainland that a very simple strength training method is the weapon weight added method. For example, if the average weight of a samurai sword is 850 grams, you can use a 3000 gram iron rod to train basic movements. If you can easily swing the iron rod, then you can use the samurai sword to cut the grass mat easily.

Closest thing to that sword would be the Italian spadone or the German zweihander, large 6-7 ft long swords that are about 6lbs. They way they are used is as crowd control where the swordsman swings the sword around them in large circular motions. A lot of idiots think “I’ll just keep my distance until the swordsman gets tired of swinging his sword around”. Well if you keep your distance the swordsman with the zweihander isn’t going to waste his energy swinging his sword around.

Yea the problem comes when you start swinging it and can't change direction mid swing, you are quite literally overextending on every strike with that sword leaving you vulnerable... Kinda like in the UFC if a fighter overextends a punch, his chin is exposed for a fraction of a second longer than if he didn't over extend BUT that fraction of a second is still what gets the guy clipped. We can also talk about how you are limited with that weapon and almost every move and swing is telegraphed by your whole body lol It is really cool and I would love to practice with one but yea pretty unpractical

Greatswords were used historically by mercenaries, alongside halberds and spears. Essentially they are the same as a spear, but the shaft is nearly indestructible. If you're a mercenary, you don't have the same resources as a fully supplied military, so you invest in more durable equipment, and without uniform requirements, you can also have everything custom made to your personal preference. That's the context of how these weapons were invented, and they were popular for several hundreds of years. Spears are the true king of the battlefield, but only because steel is valuable and wood is cheap.

@abarainosa
@abarainosa 5 ай бұрын
Except you're entirely wrong for a multitude of reasons. 1. My jab isn't like dropping a 45 lb plate directly downward into the ground. 2. It does not take a large amount of strength and effort to bring my jab back to guard my chin 3. A direct downward swing like this with a weapon this size cannot be instantly and effectively followed up with a successive series of attacks without greatly telegraphing i them via the complete transferal of bodyweight to control and move it. If you wanted show off a sword equivalent of a jab, why not use a technique that literally uses the same principle like a thrust? Probably cause moving a huge amount of weight away from your center of gravity makes it harder to control, and it doesn't attack the stationary bucket sitting on the ground at his feet.
@jancarlosnatano885
@jancarlosnatano885 5 ай бұрын
@@abarainosa I never said its exactly like a step-back jab. I said it uses the same principles. You step back and let the gigantic hunk of metal lean forward, then as it leans you slam downwards in an axe-chop. Obviously theres massive differences in fighting with a 75lbs+ slab of iron compared to literally every sort of weapon. Think about it like this, how the hell did people learn to use 11ft long glaives and 16ft long pikes? Theres obviously a massive learning curve and physical prerequisites you need to meet before even attempting to wield such weapons because of how unruly each of them are in their own respects. We’re also not talking about just a regular sword, we’re talking hypotheticals about a massive hunk of raw iron and potential ways to use it in battle. Modern humans don’t train all their lives in blade combat anymore and so all we can do is speculate how to use it if someone were even able to use it.
@abarainosa
@abarainosa 5 ай бұрын
@@jancarlosnatano885 Except that is still not what a step back jab is for. A jab in most uses is to judge distance and set up follow ups. It is a useful tool because it is low energy and low committal and it easily retrieved. Hence why I used the example of a thrust. Unless you are outrageously strong, there is only one direction that sword is going in once it begins moving down That is farther down, unless you use all of your body to stop its momentum and redirect it. In fact if you watch correctly. He's not swinging it down. He's stepping out of the way, letting it fall and pushing it down once it's past a certain point. He's not stepping back to create distance. He's stepping back because he's letting the weight crash down. He is moving around the weapon, instead of making it move around him. To your point about glaives and pikes, both had long shafts to grab them so you could better distribute the weight. Furthermore, a large sword like this with a much longer handle would probably be more useful and resemble that of the Zanbato from Rurouni Kenshin.

You might be able to deter them entering your striking range but if you swing and miss, it's gonna be really tricky to stop them coming at you and hacking you to pieces, or just grabbing your giant sword seeing as it's now 40 lbs of steel buried in the ground with a really bad leverarm.

@@Peter_Turbo4 Seriously? Don't be silly. There's a humongous difference between being able to lift heavy weight off the ground and being able to swing it aroung like a sword and actually be able to fight with it.

@@Soreign_True there is a difference in being able to swing it around compared to actually using it in a real duel or multi crowd fight. The thing is though....just being able to swing it around and move is proof enough that the possibility is there to actually practically fight with a giant sword. 1 on 1s you stick to horizontal swings and spin with it to let the momentum carry most of the weight for you, the only main problem is being able to change the direction of the swing without losing too much speed or having to stop the swings momentum completely to change direction. I would say the practicality is there and it's possible, but to be able to practically use it you would have to train for years and condition your body to use a giant sword to even come near to how the character Guts uses it from the anime Berserk.

The bigger the blade, the easier it is to move it with your own hand. Before a certain speed, it's basically no longer a sword. There is a reason real swords move with flicks not baseball swings. Someone can quite literally walk into it and stab once without needing to move fast. The big sword isn't moving fast enough to actually cause much damage to someone that understands weapons. People aren't made of solid unmoving materials. We absorb shock pretty well.
