I love that Toyota's re-entered the enthusiast market. To be honest, I'm nervous to see Toyota have this many options. Yaris, Carola, 86 and Supra is a beautiful line up. Is the enthusiast market deep enough for 2-3 more options?
@bearclaw5115

I doubt Toyota is looking at these projects to make money. They know the numbers. A single CUV would do more sales with a far smaller development budget. I think they are doing final send-offs of their classic models both out of corporate pride and also because they are enthusiasts too. Happy to see it!
@colbyowens22

@@sumoneskid I know the sports car market is slim, but I hope that with many more options, that Toyota artificially makes a bigger market. It’s thanks to Toyota’s superior profit margins that they’re partially able to do this. Maybe, wishful thinking, this opens up doors for other brands. To answer your question, I think the market IS deep enough, but most folk will welcome AFFORDABLE models especially, which is key.

What most ppl don’t realize. The 1.6 inline 3 turbo is a modular engine and was designed to have 4 & 6 cylinder variants. Having a modular engine family is nothing new as VW did the same with its inline 4 & 5 cylinder engine family used primarily in the Audi TT-S & TT-RS. I have insider sources saying the new Supra will have a Toyota designed twin turbo inline 6. Essentially two G16E’s mounted together. The all new Celica will have an engine very similar to the GR Corolla’s G16E-GTS but with one additional cylinder & piston of 0.4 liters added to it, making 400 hp. Last but not least Toyota has been testing 2 G16E’s mounted together to create an all new i6 cylinder for the next gen Supra. I’m not sure if Japan has different plans to introduce a 4 cylinder hybrid for Europe and Japanese markets due to stricter emissions standards. But I have word the NA market will get an inline 6 cylinder Supra with 600hp.

I totally agree. Evs makes the best spor cars because the physics are there. They are modularized and you don't need a lot of range for a fun cat. Add in some electrified noises and a manual but most importantly make it cheap because sport cars are impractical and require you to have more than one car. Also, with ev drain train you could make it look like a mid engine car.

2:18 Developing a modern inline-six engine from scratch can cost $150M-$500M+. This includes R&D, prototyping/testing, tooling for mass production, regulatory compliance, and more. Toyota could save by modifying an existing engine design, but building a brand-new one for durability, emissions, and performance pushes costs way up!

Exactly, the hybrid system would add too much weight thus killing the spirit and whole philosophy behind this car. I seen a lot of KZbinrs slapping superchargers into their GR86/BRZ aiming for 300 HP and they are very happy with the results. The 300 HP 1.6L turbo is perfect for this car, is what owners wanted a 2.4L FA24 turbo engine with that similar power.

I do hope the Celica can be affordable since I’m sure it always was when it was around. Since it sounds like Toyota is going to be bringing back a LOT of sports cars, I’m guessing engines will be shared, but I don’t expect many trims with some of them to keep production costs down, hence I’m skeptical they can offer diff engine options in these new models.

Not sold on the GR86 successor getting the 1.6T from the GRC. That engine is hand-built and takes a lot of man-hours to assemble. GRC is 15k+ over a regular Corolla, prob 2/3rds of that is the engine. This would make it difficult to slot a future GR86 beneath the Celica. Also if it was used it would probably be de-tuned (which could lower costs). There is talk of a new MR2 at 400hp and a new Celica at 300hp, so the GR86 successor needs to have less power than that to fit in the line-up. So my take is that if you see that engine in the new GR86 it will likely have 260-275hp. The other thing is that the 3cyl will have a higher C.O.G. making the current car the play for handling purists. I bet all these new Toyota sports cars are very good though!
@Skaursgaurd
@Skaursgaurd 22 күн бұрын
I wouldn't mind it being tuned down. The point of the 86 is the feeling of driving it, not necessarily speed. But this will please enthusiasts who want to move away from the subaru boxer, while getting the option to still tune the 86 like people have been wanting reliably. I've heard the turbochargers have been working well on them, but I still fully suspect they'll move to the 1.6T. If I were Toyota, I'd find a way to make it quicker and throw it in everything as a low to mid tier engine basing it on what level the tune would be set to out of the factory.

If they bring back the Celica, the GR Corolla does not need to exist. If anything, the GR Corolla is a production prototype for Toyota. The Corolla was perfect as a cheap platform to perfect the G16E and GR-Four. They are perfecting not only the powerful, turbocharged replacement engine for the GR86 (which people have been asking for forever), they also are perfecting their GR-Four drivetrain which they can pair with an even more powerful engine and stick it in a beautiful new Celica. The G16E also can be doubled in size to create an inline-6 with minimal development costs. The Supra needs a Toyota engine for it to be accepted as a Toyota, as does the GR86. I think this development strategy is really smart and very efficient. Toyota can develop all these new sports cars with much lower development costs than you might expect. Back to the 90s y'all!

Meanwhile, VW almost bankrupt, Stellantis 30% less sales, etc etc etc And stll the media hints Toyota down. Unbelievable. This monday the new Suzuki EVx launched in Italy.....the much anticipated Toyota sibling will follow in early 2025.

Yeah I think if they did the 86 specifically as a turbo HEV, they’d lose their market. The 86 is so special because it’s a handling-focused car that is entry-level for so many people. If they throw a turbo and Hybridize it, they’ll price out their market for it and make the 86 in general in a weird spot, being just slightly weaker and probably only a bit less expensive than the higher GR models. The spirit that the GR86 has NEEDS to be preserved.

OMG. I had a 1985 Celica Supra. My favorite car even though I now drive a BMW. And I love BMW. I drove a 2024 Supra. I fell in love. But it's so small!!. I am not a big person and I am probably smaller now then when I had my 1985. I just wish they would make it a coupe with a back seat and a tiny bit higher off the ground so I don't hit my head getting into it. I almost bought an MR2, the second generation. Shortly after that my Supra got stolen, recovered, totaled. Ugh. I hope this stuff happens before I am too old. Or maybe just suck it and get a Supra this year. Can't wait to see the Celica. I have a 1991, a replacement for my Supra, but was never happy with it. Thanks for the video. I was thinking of looking at the RC, but I will for sure wait now and see what happens!!

I'm really torn with the 86 getting the gr corolla's g16e engine. As bad as I want the 86 to come with a turbo, I feel like the characteristics for the boxer, like lower center of gravity, is what makes so many people love the 86 and gives it that unique handling. Not to mention, it definitely would not make financial sense to move manufacturing from Subaru's Gunma plant to Toyota's gr corolla location. I don't think these cars are going to last long enough in production to justify that move. These cars are already leaning on narrow, if not negative, profit margins. I think the g16e is going to end up in either the new Celica (check out Larry Chen on YT, its essentially being R&D'd right now), or mr-2. I don't think giving the 86 the 300hp makes a lot of sense for Toyota given the potential additions for their line up.... As much as I love the idea of the 86 getting the 1.6 L 3-cyclinder, I think its impossible.

This doesn’t make any sense. Toyota said the Supra wouldn’t exist without the collaboration with BMW due to sales volume. Now they’re not only taking the Supra on solo, they’re going to revive the Celica and MR2 while taking tjr GR86 solo? So, they’ll now produce 4 sports cars solo?
