This game was outstanding, one of the best high school games we've seen in a while here at GetSportsFocus.
The setting, the drama, the storylines, the caliber of the athletes, the coaches, and the rivalry perfectly played out on national TV. Wait until you see the behind-the-scenes from this game when the GSF360 Padre Football series come out in the future.
The Mightly De La Salle has some big-time future college players on their team. Cooper Flanagan is one of them. He's a 4-Star, Notre Dame commit, and he stood out above the rest of the Spartans with his playmaking ability on offense as a TE and defense as a DE. The hit he applied on Serra's junior QB Maealiuaki Smith in the third quarter was super impressive. But perhaps that hit woke a sleeping giant in Smith.
Smith started the game well with a TD pass to his speedy receiver Jaden Weber shortly after Serra's defense had a takeaway in their first defensive series against the Spartans. Smith led the offense deep into the Spartans' territory enough times that the score should have been 21-7, Serra at the half. But the offense was plagued with key turnovers thanks to some heads-up plays by the De La Salle defense, who forced three in the first half.
De La Salle pulled away 21-7 late in the third, but Padre's defense led by Sam Goligoski and Danny Niu, who each had 9 total tackles, kept the pressure and gave Smith and the offense enough time to get it together. Smith rallied his squad to two touchdown drives and showed off his versatility in front of the nation as ESPN televised the game. Smith is a 3-Star rated national recruit, and he put on a dramatic comeback that will be remembered as one of the greatest in school history because the Serra Padres finally beat the De La Salle Spartans.
There is so much more about this game that can only be told in a 10-chaptered book. Perhaps when Serra's head football coach of 22 years and counting, Patrick Walsh, a DLS Alum, Class of 1993, will write about it someday.
Maealiuaki Smith finished with 249 yards completing 19 out of 26 and two touchdowns.
Marley Alapati, a junior whose family moved to the area of Daly City during the off-season and ended up as a Padre, also had a storybook outing as he started the game with a fumble recovery and practically ended it with an interception that led to the game-winning 20-yard field goal by Dylan Joudieh. Alapati attended De La Salle in his first two years as a high schooler, and his "homecoming" at DLS will also be memorable forever. He finished with five total tackles, four solo, a fumble recovery, and an interception.

Your'e mistaken, really dont work no more? Army 2 years back takes Oklahoma 2 OT's and almost beats Michigan all the while with 1 & 2 star athletes! You sound like a casual football fan, clueless. High School, College are different than NFL. De La Salle the problem is they don't know who they are, lost identity. They half veer half spread. Wack, I see it the other way, go back to full commit under center and smash fools.

@@ArryRedknappQPR Yep. Since none of the NorCal teams have a chance to win against MD/SJB/Cen10 in the near future, the championship for NorCal is the regionals. Folsom, Serra, and St. Francis have caught up to DLS. Pittsburg and Bellarmine could also be future threats in the future. Even if the Spartans revamp the program, would they have enough depth to challenge the Big 3 down south?

@@marcvslicinivscrassvs7536 how come these northern california coches aren't willing to recruit sophmores, juniors, and rising seniors? Or at the very least send a bus or van to pick up the kids and take them to school. If the tech companies in silicon valley do this, why can't coach Walsh with his all VC/PE/tech serra alumni connections do this?

@@marcvslicinivscrassvs7536 Do u think it's time for the veer To go and them to get a whole new playbook Or is it they need more talent and athletic players like they used too

@@marcelrelly4961 Both! I think the buy in needs for DLS to run the veer at a very high level just isn't present at the school. Sure, DJ Williams, Amani Toomer and MJD played in the veer, but 20+ years ago DLS was the big show in town, and a great way to get to the next level. You had 3-5 DI players mixed with a bunch of other smart, gung ho types and that was the formula. DLS can't get those players anymore, for whatever reason (both Joe Mixon and Najee Harris went to HS in DLS's area). The second problem is, even if DLS does decide to recruit, they might field a team with max 8 D-I recruits, with everyone going both ways. So while DLS would smash most teams, they would run into trouble against deeper teams like MD, SJB, STA, BG, IMG, St Frances, etc. that are just as talented. They'd probably win 50% of those games with such a lineup. What DLS could do if they want to run the veer is recruit at least monster defensive players who maybe play some offense but stay mostly on defense. That would give them a 2000 Ravens type team. Since neither scenario is realistic, DLS should definitely scrap the veer and go with a more modern offense that can score points more quickly. DLS biggest weakness in the post-Streak era has been its inability to keep up with high scoring squads. You get DLS down two touchdowns and they are in trouble.

Bosco would be cool but Serra vs MD… we’ve always said, a part two with preparation gives Serra coaches and players the edge. Serra playing MD was a little unexpected last year. They’ll have 12 weeks to prepare for both and use the rest of the season to destroy the CCS Open. SFHS is the only team in the WCAL that can beat Serra. M-A will be a problem in the playoffs. Serra will most likely be in the finals vs M-A or SFHS hopefully at a better location this time.

De La Salle has lost its identity, folded to the pressure of "spread era," they stopped believing in the smallest details can win games. I guess in order to recruit the youtube generation you need glamour and glitter.

Agree. DLS has the resources to do it but I don't think the administration really wants DLS to have the same reputation as SJB and MD as "football factories." DLS could have continued the Streak another 5-10 years but the administration changed the admissions requirements to favor kids from local parochial schools. Right after 2003 DLS stopped getting DJ Williams, MJD and Terrance Kelly type talent.

@@ArryRedknappQPR yup I did. I won most valuable back in my class when we first got there. When I got to varsity my senior year he would kick me off of scout defense for hitting the starters and not letting them score. He plays the kids he likes, not the ones that’s most productive. I still got blessed to play football in college with my practice film even though alumbaugh didn’t like my play😂🤷🏾‍♂️
