No other song calls up such a strong emotion as this one. The love of my life told me she didn't love me anymore. It was the most gut wrenching hurt I've ever experienced. I could barely function. It was horrible. At that time I would have gladly given up 20 years of my life if she would stay. Well we split and divorced. Finally I moved on but never forgot her. I never stopped loving her. We were apart 14 years and one day she contacted me. She never forgot me either. We started dating and eventually got married again. We've been married now for 21 years. Life is good!

What a remarkable love story , true love never dies , I left and divorced my childhood love , we were so wrong , in the fact that we supported each other’s alcoholism , I’m sober and I still love her , but …. Ya. , u guessed it

I was madly in love that 16/17 to a married man and I had never first time my parents ever ever said I love you or we love you is it after they picked me up from the nuthouse we’re trying to commit suicide and then one time I want to do my moms newspaper out with her before we got the kids off to school and we couldn’t really talk so I turned on the radio and this song came on or I don’t know oh I know is I said mom I want you to listen to this song because I had just gotten out of the hospital from trying to commit suicide I said mama I want you to listen to the song and she listened and she said that’s the most pathetic thing I have ever heard. That shaped my relationships for decades but this song maybe it’s pathetic but I always wanted somebody to feel that way about me whether it be my parents my lovers my siblings all I’ve ever wanted in life somebody to love me

In his biography Harlem to Hollywood he tells the story of how the conductor started this off too slow. Billy made the split decision to ask for a restart or go with it. He went with it, resulting in this amazing performance which he considered one of his best performances of the song. Listen to that a cappella vocal. The crowd knew they were part of a special performance. What a singer. What a legend. What a gentleman.
