The main issue being that they stretched a book of 300 pages into a 9 hour trilogy. For commercial not for artistic reasons. Yes, when Saruman starts interrupting Gandalf again, you can see Galadriel give Saruman a slow, subtle look of harrowing suspicion as she moves only her eyes from Gandalf to Saruman. Excellent physical acting choice and execution by Blanchett and by Jackson directing. That one, slow, burning look captures Tolkien’s emphasis upon Galadriel’s reluctance about Saruman’s lead status in the council that *she* called into being. (I also always wondered a bit about that-why didn’t Galadriel lead the White Council? Then again, according to Tolkien’s unflappable sense of English protocol, it would be improper for the one who summons or convenes a council by his or her authority to lead that same body of members. Great flourishes and details.)

Saruman spent literal centuries delaying and dragging the feet of the White Council, precisely because he had already made up his mind to turn to darkness. He put them off the scent of Sauron because, at minimum, he was going to ally with Sauron and be a powerful captain when Sauron ruled Middle-Earth. But his real preference was to be the Dark Lord himself, which is why he lulled everyone into thinking that the Ring had long ago rolled down the Anduin to the sea. In reality, Saruman had long had servants dredging the Anduin for the Ring, and may even have chosen to settle in Isengard because of its proximity to the River, where he always suspected the Ring to be.

@@maxwellsope1080 There's nothing I've ever read that's suggested Gandalf had an affair with Galadriel, although you could be excused for assuming that based off the Hobbit films. If you want closer to real Gandalf, stick with the original LOTR films.

Lest it be forgotten but Galadriel (and her hair) were considered so beautiful that The Tolkien world’s greatest Jewelsmith infamously begged her three times for single locks of her hair to immortalize inside one or more of the Silmarils.. He arrogantly approached her and was rebuffed. 😅 Yet swarthy and stocky short king Gimli the Dwarf gets what Feanor couldn’t thru heartfelt respect and genuine admiration (3 locks of Galadriel’s hair to ensnare in a soon to be family heirloom chain necklace, for the Dwarves; The last vestige of the light of the Two Trees which supposedly dwelt in the Elf Lady’s hair) 😂

Can someone expand on Elrond's line, "For 400 years we have had peace"? What is his definition of peace. I can't find a significant moment around 400 years earlier that was a decisive end to conflict.

Also Elrond was well aware of what Isildur did with the Ring after that the Last Alliance of Elves & Men. Perhaps after the Ring escaped Isildur everyone assumed it was lost(unaware of Gollum), and with Sauron yet to return even Elrond became complacent.

@@Danrisby He was quite possibly well on the road though. He had his own spies hunting for the ring in and around the Anduin and prying eyes at Dol Guldor might uncover this. His reasons for not investigating the reports of the necromancer were self-serving and not for the good of all.

I wonder if Lady Galadriel could sense one step ahead? Because she could read Gandalf's thoughts in this scene. I'm guessing maybe she could pry into Saruman as well.
@annandune5 ай бұрын
@@skycloud4802 Possibly, although this is a liberty taken by the film, albeit one of the more reasonable ones. For me, this scene does get very close to suggesting the rest of them have their suspicions about Saruman which wouldn't fit very well with TLOTR, because if Gandalf really was that doubtful about Saruman, one suspects he wouldn't have gone to meet him, particularly at Isengard which is Saruman's domain. Arguably this scene falls just short of outright suggesting the suspect Saruman of some kind of plot, and I guess you could argue that even if Gandalf did have doubts at the beginning of TLOTR, he would never have suspected the depths to which Saruman had fallen or indeed the severity of the action he would take against Gandalf. The fight scene at the beginning of the third film, whilst being utter baloney in terms of lore, was quite exciting in terms of its staging and does show Saruman in a different light, still actually opposing Sauron at this stage. Perhaps this goes some way to alleviating any doubts Gandalf, Elrond, or Galadriel might have. I didn't like the b/s of having Gandalf captured though.
@zacrast165 ай бұрын
@@annanduneThat’s pretentious. These movies are incredibly faithful to the book. The only things these movies really add/change are Legolas, (which I like and makes sense, because would have been in Mirkwood during this time and likely at the Battle of the five Armies even if he wasn’t a character yet in the book. Tauriel, which I like because she’s badass, hot and gives emotional stakes to Kili’s death where there was none in the book. Azog, which I really don’t mind because he did kill Thror in the book and is the father of Bolg who WAS in the book. And a few minor other things too that made for a more satisfying film experience. They aren’t perfect, but it’s a fucking great trilogy. They just unfortunately had to live up to the greatest trilogy of all time, which nothing could and possibly ever will.
@immortallegacy1005 ай бұрын
It should be noted that in the books, by this time The White Council had come to the conclusion that The Necromancer and Sauron were one and the same, but prior to this, both Galadriel and Elrond sided with Gandalf (both that The Necromancer was Sauron and that action was necessary). Saruman however disagreed, at first saying The Necromancer was a human and later a Nazgul, and later stating that action wasn't necessary despite it being Sauron. When the vote came up however, the majority always sided with Saruman, and the other members of the White Council were Radagast and Cirdan, as well as other elf lords such as Glorfindel and Celeborn being other likely members.

The four of them are so perfectly cast and so talented it shows in this scene. I think even if you couldn't speak English, you would understand each perspective from the body language and tone. Elrond's warrior posture, Gandalf's wise humility. Galadriel sees straight to the heart of the matter. And Christopher Lee masterfully turning the audience against Saruman by showing what a conniving, cowardly politician he is.

Saruman represents the voice of knowledge and power. Galadriel embodies silence, patience and authority. Elrond represents hope (Rivendel is considered the safest place in the Middle Earth), he is the main face of the Elves in the world (along with Galadriel, but his legendary name has much more history). Gandalf is known around all places, with many different names, every elf, dwarf, man and hobbit have heard about this wizard (far more than about Saruman), he brings news, happiness, memories (and fireworks). So, they are: POWER, ELDERLY, HOPE and HAPPINESS
