Tonight, the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros will play in game 5 of the 2022 World Series at the same exact time that the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans are facing off against each other on Thursday Night Football. But what you might not realize is that as crazy as this is, this isn't entirely uncharted territory. Because in 1986, game seven of the 1986 World Series between the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox took place at the same exact time, just 20 miles away, as a New York Giants Monday Night Football game on ABC against the Washington Redskins. I think Mets/Giants is much more common than you would think. Speaking from experience as one. But I think these two teams specifically ('86 Mets and '86 Giants) are a big reason why that is a popular combination. That's how David Wright became a fan of both teams. Not to mention you share two divisional rivals in Washington and Philly. Whereas the Yankees/Jets share a huge rival in Boston/New England.

I was at the Giants game that night. My father's company had season tickets for the Giants but nobody who worked there wanted to go because they were watching the Mets game on TV. So, he gave 4 tickets to me. I called some friends and we had a great time sitting front row, second level in the end zone. It really was strange having the crowd cheer at odd times. Took me a while to figure out the crowd was reacting to the Mets game. I don't recall seeing many people with TVs but it seemed like everyone but me brought a radio!

The Giants went on to debut in their first super bowl several months later in January 1987. They humiliated the Broncos 39-20, winning their first championship in approximately 30 years. The Giants and Broncos played against each other at some point this same regular season, you should do a video covering that game.

I was a Yankees fan rooting for the Mets and also a HUGE Giants fan. I still watched the World Series at my friends house. After the Mets won, I ran home to watch the Giants game. Was a pretty great night for NY/NJ sports...great year when you factor in the Giants Super Bowl victory.

The other thing to note is the current camaraderie between the Eagles and Phillies. If the Phills take the game tonight, than the Eagles players will probably react. Earlier this year I went to a Mets game but it was coinciding with a Rangers playoff game. I along with many of the other fans at the stadium were more focused on the Rangers game, watching it on our phones and/or tablets. It was a big game because the Rangers were facing the Penguins in Game 6 and needed to force Game 7. When took the lead in the final period, it felt like half the stadium erupted for hockey. We started a "Let's Go Rangers" chant for most of the inning.

I was 17, Die hard Giants & Mets fan. Took the small 21” tv from my bedroom & put it on top of the big TV (whopping 31 inches in a wood cabinet) in the family room. Picked up an extra long coaxial cable from radio shack to run the cable signal from the living room. Watched both games at the same time With my younger brother. During commercials in the WS would switch channels on both TVs would watch giants on the big tv. We still laugh about it occasionally.

Ahh man this reminds of game 7 of the 1991 world series. That game was played the same night as the redskins vs giants. Historically NYC has been a national league town, so the Mets going to the World Series in 86 was a big deal. Most of the time an expansion team wouldn't be able to compete for popularity with a franchise like the Yankees, but in NYC the town is split probably 49-51% in favor of the Yankees. NYC is still more of a baseball town.

Great video. I remember those days like it was yesterday. I was in Boston on the night of game 6, the only Met fan at a party of my old college classmates who were all Red Sox fans. The fact that they didn't kill me was a testament to their humanity. I also remember returning home to New York on Sunday night, being glad that I didn't miss game 7 while I rode home on Amtrak. As for game 7, I had 2 other college friends staying over that night who were Red Sox fans. They were not happy about the outcome and passed when I asked if they'd join me at the ticker tape parade the next day. One of my friends had Giant season tickets and was one of the 5,000 who brought a portable TV to the Giants/Redskins game. That was a truly magical year for the Mets and Giants, one I hope to see again someday in New York. Maybe Mets and Jets this time, like in 1969?

One is “Monday Night Football”, and the other was game 7 of the “World Series” with the Mets and the Red Sox. Why did they bother on channel flipping and see what game you are playing, either football or baseball.

As a life-long Mets and Giants fan, I found this fascinating--it was something I'd never heard about. (I did want to point out one small error at 8:09: "Seeing as Interleague play wasn't a thing... so the Yankees and Mets had never played each other." Actually, the two teams had played each other since 1963 in the Mayor's Trophy Game, an in-season exhibition game that raised money for charity as well as gave the winner unofficial city bragging rights. The game had previously been played amongst the Brooklyn Dodgers/New York (baseball) Giants/Yankees before the Dodgers and Giants headed west. The Mets/Yankees contests continued until 1983.)

Those Mayor's Trophy Games between the Mets and Yankees were glorified preseason Major League Baseball contests, as was the Mets-Red Sox exhibition game in September 1986. It was a, as it was, a super sized preseason game.

I will never forget that game 6. I was pulling for the Mets and figured it was over after Boston took their final lead. That comeback and Kirk Gibson's homerun against the A's a couple of years later are two of my favorite sports memories. Baseball was my number 1 love until they cancelled the 94 WS. I completely turned my back on MLB after that. I still watch the minors and everything else except that.

Oh yeah that's right. Dick Stockton (who was the Red Sox local PBP, and thus became the first to do play by play on all four networks) was there for 1, 2, 6, and 7--including the Fisk home run. Who were the Bengals hosting at Riverfront? The Patriots of course. I think cause of the markets that might not have been televised, which would make it the last Sunday game to this day that wasn't.

@@garydizzine I've been to that complex so I know how the parking lot is laid out. I have no idea who would blink and postpone their game though. I guess it would have to be MLB since postponing an NFL game in the middle of the season would screw up travel and practice plans for both teams.

Interesting video. These two games that took place on that day the Mets won the World Series in game 7 and the Giants was interrupting the game where Mets fans went nuts. I went through research and I found out that the original VHS release of the original “My Little Pony: The Movie” came out the day after the World Series ended and the Mets were the World Champions at the time. When “My Little Pony: The Movie” hit the video stores, fans were still celebrated on the Mets victory.

There was also a conflict in 1987. The Broncos-Vikings game had to be moved to Monday night because the Twins were in the World Series against the Cardinals. It aired only in Denver and Minnesota.

i’m a jets and mets fan, and your point about giants and jets fans not being a frequent fan combination made me think. my theory is that it has to do with the fact that the jets played at shea stadium while the giants at one point spent a considerable time playing at yankees stadium, so the pairings for fans made more sense. just a theory though. wonder what the actually reason is

There’s also a generation that saw the two Shea tenants (the Miracle Mets and Namath’s I guarantee we’ll win the game Jets) miraculously win their respective league titles in the same calendar year (1969) to consider in this. I suspect that drove a whole generation of 1960s kids who’d been brought up on Yankees & Giants dominance, saw it fall apart in the latter half of the decade, then take a look at what was going on at Flushing Meadows and say, Why do we want to go to the Bronx again? It used to be a more clear-cut alignment before the Jets and Giants both moved to Jersey. Old-timers definitely hewed closer to the Yankees/Giants vs. Mets/Jets paradigm back when they played in each other's respective stadiums but the younger generations of New York fans tend to be a lot more mix-and-match.

There was someone who I know that had tickets to Game 7 and the MNF game and he would've went to both but as it turned out. Game 7 was rained out and had to be postponed to Monday. So he without hesitation choose to go to Game 7 and gave the ticket to his neighbor.

I never thought about that but you made a very interesting point. While it isn't exactly comparable to 1986, the following year, when it was ABC's turn to broadcast the World Series, they ran into a problem when the 1987 series between Minnesota and St. Louis went to a decisive seventh game. Game 7 of the 1987 World Series was played in the Metrodome in Minneapolis. This caused the scheduled Minnesota Vikings game against the Denver Broncos to be pushed the next night. ABC wound up broadcasting two NFL games simultaneously on October 26, 1987. The game between the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams was televised to about 85% of nation while the Minneapolis-St. Paul and Denver markets got the Vikings-Broncos game. Gary Bender did play-by-play for the Vikings-Broncos game with Lynn Swann.

My wife and I had a partial season ticket plan for the Mets in 1986 and we are also NY Giants fans. We saw the Mets win game 3 of the NLCS 6-5 in walk off fashion; lose game 1 of the WS 1-0 and win game 7 of the WS coming from behind to win 8-5. For us there was no doubt that baseball was a higher priority than football on that night. Still, I had no idea that the crowd in the Meadowlands was so involved in the World Series that it impacted the football game. Thankfully the Giants had a championship run of their own and took down the Broncos 39-20 in the Super Bowl. Best year ever for my teams. Closest comparison for me was in 1980 watching the US Olympic team win the gold medal in hockey followed by the Islanders winning their first Stanley Cup a few months later.

I remember this night in 1986. I watched the World Series and flipped occasionally to the football game. It was Game 7! of the World Series and the football game was a regular season game. It turned out to be a preview of the NFC Championship game but back then baseball was bigger than it is now. The one thing you would notice in the broadcasts is that they update what's going on in the other game. Watching both games in 2022 they mention the other game but never give updates. Al Michales gives a semi play by play at times because he knows how big a Game 7 was at the time. Fantasy football and gambling have made football king now. I personally had the World Series on the TV and had to watch the football game on my tablet in 2022.

What is not generally known is Buckner came back to the Red Sox in 1990 to finish his career and was forgiven for the ground ball by many. It was really the pitching of the Red Sox that cost them that game and eventually the series that led up to that blunder and Red Sox fans realized both that and the fact they still could have won the series in seven games. It should also be noted in New York, baseball was still KING over football then and would continue to be for years after (and even with the Jets and Giants, New York is still a baseball town first). What I remember about this was the NFL and the Maras (who owned (and are still part-owners of) the Giants) were MASSIVELY furious over this and I suspect were it up to then-NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, he would have made clear to NBC and MLB Game 7 had to be played as scheduled that Sunday night, even playing in poor conditions or NBC would face violating their contract with the NFL (and it actually had stopped raining when it was postponed and never started back up). Rozelle and the Maras I wonder if they seriously looked at going to court to block MLB from game 7 airing directly opposite MNF because it was the Giants, trying to force them to play Game 7 at 4:00 PM that Monday or wait until Tuesday to play Game 7. Obviously now, that would not be the case, but if the Giants had lost to the then-Redskins, I wonder if the Maras would have blamed MLB to taking the fans attention away from their game to Game 7. In the case of this past World Series, the reason I believe Game 3 was not postponed until as late as it was is I believe FOX was trying to force MLBto play Game 3 even in very poor conditions because originally, the Eagles-Texans Thursday night game (airing nationally on Amazon Prime) was to have aired on their owned and operated stations (WTXF-TV FOX29 in Philadelphia and I believe FOX26 in Houston) and FOX did not want to have to move their telecasts of that game for Game 5 (a reminder for those who don't know, ALL NFL games that air on cable or Amazon Prime MUST also air over-the-air in the home markets of the teams playing). That telecast was moved to MyNetwork stations in both cases, WPHL-TV (Channel 17) in Philly and My20 in Houston. Also as far as this year, when MLB did up the World Series schedule after the lockout delayed things, I believe the NFL was actually a non-factor in how it was scheduled (though MLB should in the future keep the Fri-Sat-Mon-Tues-Wed-Fri-Sat schedule it was supposed to be this year because of the NFL). The actual reason I believe it was done that way was because the World Series was coming very close to the mid-term elections on November 8, which were widely expected to be the most important mid-term elections of our lifetime as in the eyes of many democracy was on the line. I believe MLB was forced to originally schedule the World Series as they did due a situation where if certain teams made the series and were scheduled to host Games 1-2 and 6-7, they could not go later than Saturday 11/5 because of a lack of five-star hotel space being available due to election officials and campaigns needing the hotel rooms for final campaigning and then the results, making such rooms likely unavailable to MLB from Saturday 11/5 to Wednesday 11/9, with if that happened and any World Series games were postponed beyond Saturday 11/5 they would have had to wait until at least Thursday 11/10 to play such games when such rooms opened back up. I believe the five-star requirement dates back to 2005 after the Red Sox, who had home field over the (baseball) Cardinals in the 2004 World Series (as back then, the winning league in the All-Star game got home field) had control over hotel space as the hosts of Games 1-2 and 6-7 and put the Cardinals in apparent sub-par space with many blaming that for why the Red Sox swept that series (the Red Sox actually won eight straight games as they first came back from down 3-0 to the Yankees in a memorable ALCS). For Houston, being as large a city as it is this was a non-factor that allowed MLB to keep the travel day between Games 5-6 that would have had to have been scrapped if the rainout happened and certain teams were hosting Games 6-7.

Final note to JG9-maybe it's time you expanded your horizons and added a baseball channel. Game 6 could be the first "Dumb Decisions" segment for such a channel deliniating the absolute wretched job of managing on BOTH parts as both McNamara and Johnson made one blunder after another (not sure who you root for in baseball so the name of such a channel isn't obvious). Probably Game 7 would have been played Sunday night even if the conditions were atrocious. As I remember, the Maras and then-NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle were furious with MLB's quick postponement of Game 7, especially since it had stopped raining by the time it was postponed and never resumed raining. They likely would have made MLB play the game Sunday even if the field was in poor condition and very wet in the outfield. If it were deemed too dangerous to play Game 7 Sunday night, it probably would have been played Monday afternoon at 3:00 or delayed to Tuesday night.
