The biggest irony is that it’s CM Punk who said this. People don’t know this but CM Punk used to be one of Dave’s favorites. CM Punk vs Samoa Joe 2 in ROH in 2004 was the first match in the United States to get a 5 star rating from Dave meltzer since 1997. That’s SEVEN YEARS. Think of every match you saw in the attitude era of rock vs Austin, Austin vs undertaker, Austin vs Bret hart, Christ Benoit vs Bret hart, taz vs BAM BAM Bigalow. Dave is telling you CM Punk and Samoa Joe was better than all of those people. In 2011 CM Punk vs John Cena was the first 5 star match Dave gave WWE in FOURTEEN YEARS. According to Dave CM Punk vs John Cena at money in the bank 2011 is better than any match you ever saw in WWE since 1997. And it was Punk who said that about the 5 stars. The man who brought them back to America and back to WWE.

No mention of the wig. No mention of the potatoes and receipts earlier in the match either. Moné rolled out to avoid getting a _roll_ of receipts from Shida at one point. At least that's what it looked like. There was more than "sloppiness" going on. All of that happened before the last third of the match, when Shida pulled the wig loose during that standing punching spot, accidentally or not. Then that drama went on for five or six minutes, all the way to the awful-looking finisher. Move, wig adjust, move, wig adjust, move, wig adjust... Monè's kickout at "one" seemed more _shoot_ spiteful than anything else, too. Sooner or later we'll find out what exactly happened backstage after the match, too. I wouldn't be too surprised if we never see Moné and Shida in the same match in AEW again. What a weird fascinating total mess. Apparently, Dave missed the most interesting parts of it entirely. Figures!

It's been nearly 15 years since I last worked in medicine, but from what I remember around Concussions/CTE etc. it's not so much the one-off hits to the head that are the problem, like chair shots (although they obviously DO contribute) but it's the multiple hits, multiple Concussions that are undiagnosed and then getting another one. If you look at Bret Hart's incident in the match with Goldberg, not long before the kick, he did the Figure 4 on the ring post spot and hit the BACK of his head off the floor, THEN he takes the kick to the head and IMMEDIATELY falls and slams the BACK of his head off of the mat. So he could have already been concussed from the Figure 4 spots, then took the kick to the head and got another immediate concussion when his head slammed off the mat. Obviously the unprotected chair shots ARE bad, and DO contribute, but not in of themselves, otherwise Mick Foley would be drooling in a fucking corner right now! So would Terry Funk have been ... I think it's more the hitting the back of the head on the mat when taking a bump alot of the time that cause the initial concussion, or multiple hits like that in one match or on consecutive nights with live tours. With AEW, weirdly, the fact these chucklefucks only wrestle once a week - at most - might actually do them a favour and inadvertently protect them from the absolute worst effects. In the 80's when Jim was on the road, the guys were wrestling 6 or 7 nights a week, they could hit their head on Monday and by Sunday have done if 5/6 more times and had multiple concussions ... fast forward and it fucks them up in later years
@markdawson72553 ай бұрын
In his autobiography, Bret also says after the Goldberg match he stayed on the road, did house show matches vs Sid, and took the Powerbomb on a nightly basis. That can't have helped.
@NJTRAF3 ай бұрын
@@markdawson7255 Jesus... I didn't know that... I feel bad for Bret, of course, because if that had happened a few years later with the concussion protocols he'd probably have been protected better, plus I can't remember if it's post-concussion syndrome or something that happens after a stroke that people can become obsessed with something and it feels a bit like Bret's become obsessed with a hatred for Goldberg, even though he will have had alot of concussions prior to that one, and Goldberg has apologised on numerous occasions, said it was a complete accident and even recently I think with CVV said he wasn't ready and hadn't had enough training, I know it ended his career early and of course you'd be angry about it, but even though he is my all time favourite wrestler I do wish sometimes he'd just accept that it's a mistake, mistakes happen, accidents happen and let it go. I mean for fucks sake, he forgave Vince, Shawn and WWE not only for the Screwjob but obviously the death of Owen which was an accident.
@jediknight12943 ай бұрын
The only person to blame for Brett's injury is Brett... The Goldberg incident was a fuck up and the concussions in that match were mostly because of how Brett took bumps. I say that as someone with training who knows how to take a bump. The fact he is obsessed with the idea of Goldberg being at fault shows that he isn't able to rationally analyse his own contribution to his career ending.

Especially for guys who have been in the industry for 15+ years and wrestled 500+ matches, as a fan I expect those guys to be protected and given a lighter workload. Even some of the newer guys on the main roster have a decade of bumping under their belt (Gunther, Priest, etc) They already gave their body to the business and will have a rough road ahead. They should be able to enjoy wrestling a few high profile matches in exotic locations during the last 5-10 years of their careers, and have the best times of their lives while they still have some youth and health to enjoy it.

If I was a female heel working a wrestling match and my wig fell off during said match, I would milk that for a reaction for as long as I lived. How did they not improv a single spot after the hair issues started?

More then once I've seen the women in wwe/nxt have extensions come out during the match yell at their opponent for ripping their hair out. 😅 Makes me respect them more.

I know anyone with a lick of sense who follows wrestling has been making fun of Meltzer for losing his mind over the last 3+ years but the last month or two has been REALLY unhinged from Uncle Dave.

Regarding the various 5 or 5+ star matches Dave Meltzer has given out for AEW this year, which is 8 in total, 7 of them have included Will Ospreay. Yeah...that's just kinda sad.

I will admit, what Jim started with has happened to me: It was Sunday, I once was told "come to Starbucks next Friday at 5:30pm; I show up the next Friday and no one showed and they texted me at 5:45pm - "next week Friday they meant". 😖

My usual methodology for Dave's ratings is deduct 2 for AEW and add 1 for WWE. It might be deduct 5 for AEW this time.

AEW - 4 star is the minimum, a run of the mill match.

Oh thank God, it’s my favourite recurring segment. You know that someone figured out that Will Ospreay has more 5 star matches than the combined efforts of WWE, WCW. ROH, TNA, ECW and Jim Crockett promotions. What a tool our crazy old Uncle is.

Brian you cant talk about Dave grading on a curve when you do the same thing when the match involves someone from New York. The Willow/Stat match had TWO from NY, so, of course you're jacking all over it.

What was the star rating for Mone's match?
@JoeMercersWay3 ай бұрын
That Dave review and giving the match negative 3 stars would have been what a man with morals and a backbone would have done, even if it cost him subscribers. He has fuelled this descent into disgrace by pandering to the numbskulls from day 1, instead of condemning them fpr what they are like Jim does. This PPV was disgusting and in any normal, sane world, AEW wouldn't be allowed to air another show until they agreed to stop doing this hokey BS.

Dave has given out more 5* matches in this decade so far (99) than he had in the 80s and 90s combined (89).

Why are we still concerned or entertaining Meltzer’s rating? It’s no secret he’s biased, and his taste is clearly whatever yeah AEW produces.

Meltzer is a nobody in professional wrestling business. He wasn't a wrestler, nor a booker, he's just an internet personality, a nerd who writes whatever he likes. So many guys working in professional wrestling have mocked this guy over the years, he's become a complete joke.

Meltzer and AEW fans act like Will Ospreay is the greatest pro wrestler on the planet man I swear. Sure he can do a bunch of kicks and flips, but that doesn’t automatically make a great wrestler. There’s layers to it. A bunch of kicks and flips mean nothing if you’re in a shit feud in a shit promotion. A bunch of kicks and flips mean nothing if you’re mediocre on the mic, bruv. There’s no depth to anything Ospreay does, it has no meaning, it’s all style no substance. Part of wrestling is telling a story, it’s what draws people in and keeps them coming back. If you’re in a baseless feud, then the fact that you can do a triple 360 Lionsault or whatever is pointless, you’re just going out there and doing it just to do it at that point. There’s a big difference between Ospreay and the guys that are considered the greats. Bret Hart made you feel something, Shawn Michaels made you feel something, Kurt Angle made you feel something, etc. Every move they made was deliberate in furthering the overall narrative of the match, they were great workers that could tell a story in the ring. Ospreay makes you feel nothing, everything he does just seems like he’s going out there and saying, “Look at me! Look what I can do!”

Uncle Dave in the past: These star ratings are based on my personal taste and opinion. Anyone taking these as goals, accomplishment and milestone is not my fault. Uncle Dave now a days: I personally didn't like or enjoy this match but still here's 4 and half stars! Also, pinky swear I am clearly NOT biased at all.
