The first three quarters of the documentary were an actual biography of Cody. The last quarter was TV storyline primer for next year's WrestleMania main event.

Cody was painted as the bad guy by the Bucks and Omega when he was out of the door. Yet when he left it all went to hell. Cody was peacemaker in AEW and Cody just got tired of putting out fires backstage. He was like fuck this I can still go in the ring and make money.
@wonipowa7542
@wonipowa7542 Жыл бұрын
Yes, before he started trying to sugar coat everything you got the very strong sense that people were coming to him constantly about issues with this or that, and he was mediating and putting out fires plus enforcing a bit of the old school attitude he had about the locker room. Then when he left, they all went wild with the Bucks politics and nonsense.
@Saltoftheearth008
@Saltoftheearth008 Жыл бұрын
Yet Cody is a class act who won’t say a bad word about anyone. Very professional, something people in the AEW locker room lack, professionalism. Hate CM Punk all you want, he is what he is. Polarizing. Perhaps a hot head but The Elite, specifically the Bucks are worse. No other top pro wrestling executives leak backstage issues to the dirtsheets but then. I’m sure there’s been plenty of disagreements in WWE but love them or hate them. Everyone knew Vince was the boss and he don’t play that. Imagine a Jim Ross, Johnny Ace or Triple H when they had their position of power calling Meltzer to report gossip. It’s shameful how AEW is ran. It starts with Khan. Cody probably saw that and split but he doesn’t want them to fail. It’s really sad. Their backstage drama is all the press they get, when guys like Bryan Danielson, Will Osprey, FTR, Omega, Cole, MJF are putting on great matches but it’s overshadowed because of the Punk/Elite drama. I’m over it.

Leaving AEW could be the best thing that happens to Cody. I feel like as soon as he overcomes Roman, he will be the top guy in the company. Media and image wise he is perfect for that role. Plus aside from some minor beef with Seth (which may well be kayfabe) he hasn't had to put up with any childish BS or drama backstage nor needed to act as a mediator for the spats between the kids. Cody has a quiet dignity about him as well. He must just laugh to himself and say 'sure guys whatever you say' each time the Bucks take sole credit for AEW existing without really acknowledging what Cody or TK did. I like that he doesn't bite back or makes a big thing about it. He knows the sensible part of the wrestling fandom knows his significant contribution to AEW existing and he doesn't need to harp on about it every 5 mins like the Bucks do.

Two things really stuck out to me about the documentary. 1.) Dustin didn't appear. I imagine Cody would've wanted him in it. So who stopped it? Was it WWE, AEW, or Dustin himself? 2.) There was a lot of footage of NXT-Era Dusty talking about Cody. Was there some planned documentary in the works at the time that got scrapped?

As much as I admire and like Cody, I always feel like he’s coming off disingenuous or “try hard.” Like he’s trying to sell me something. The bleached hair, neck tattoo, and promos don’t help matters. Dusty is forever a beloved legend. Dustin as Goldust might just be my favorite character, gimmick, and overall personality in wrestling history. I seriously think Dustin Rhodes/Runnels is one of the best wrestlers AND like his father, he’s so natural on the mic, no matter what he’s playing or saying. Cody is incredibly talented and dedicated, so I mean no disrespect to him. I just don’t get the same earnest, true vibe from him that I always got from his father and brother.

@@jasoninflagstaff Absolutely, Jason. I concur with everything you wrote. Dustin is truly “a natural,” as his old ring name implies. He just has *IT.* He is absolutely brilliant in the ring! On the mic, as Goldust, he was this most wonderfully peculiar, campy, creepy, funny, and dynamic presence. The man is an artist with such spectacular agility, moves, so fluid and confident, but not cocky. Shit, even in more recent years, Dustin is looking more fit that ever! His ring work has only grown better! He’s 6-7 years older than me. Dustin inspires me to push through and work to get more fit and to stay true to myself. Never stop being kind to myself and others. Dustin is awesome! We are lucky he’s still with us. 🍀 😊

I know that people don't like impact wrestling, but they deserve the credit for making cody from an ex wwe jobber into mega star that he is today. They gave cody the american nightmare gimmick with the theme song and made him who he is today. Same goes with drew mcintyre, but yet people crap on that company all the time.

As Brian put it it’s like wrestling purgatory. It’s a place people can go and get paid while reinventing or reinvigorating themselves.

@@baigmen I think of it as wrestling's halfway house. Sure, you can start over and rebuild your life there, but if you're there to begin with it's probably because you made some poor life choices.

Did they give him that gimmick? The fact that he's still using it would suggest to me he came up with it himself

He had that song before he went to impact. He was billed as American Nightmare in Japan.

Ben as they say in the territory days... "How can we miss you if you don't go away." With Cody and "All Friends Go Whack Yourself", Cody decided to go back to Vince. This way, he could be a star and then learn something new and then be even "bigger and better" than just a mid-card yutz.

jim’s theory on why cody didn’t win the AEW world title was my exact theory too. plus i think he was also trying to show that he could be a captivating character without needing to have the preverbial spotlight of having the world title

24:01 But… the NWA and ROH World title dont count? Maybe theyre not as big as maybe an Impact or AEW, but they are televised world titles.

I don't believe for a sec Cody would be more level headed than the rest of the Elite. Like what abort his decision making leads you to believe he's anything but out for himself above everything else. He'd be just as mad Punk was getting paid cause he's not getting paid like that simple. Like his mind was never in wrestling as anything but a means to getting more successful in Hollywood.

Ive really enjoyed sitting back and watching these high quality wrestling documentaries recently. You have to keep in mind the WWE propoganda and their narrative (like Ric Flair's TNA run being ignored or as they say here Dusty taken off TV) just like you have to do with Netflix history documentaries. But they are very enjoyable nonetheless.

Cody has talent and I don't blame him for leaving WWE and wanting to value himself more and trying something different and all that, but I will always look at him as a mid card guy. Maybe like Brian said if he had turned heel and been a mega heel in AEW, which I honestly think he seems more of just by how he dresses and acts, maybe I would view him as a main eventer
