When I was in Tunisia, a majority Muslim country, we went out to a restaurant. When we sat down the waiter came over and asked what we would like to drink. I asked if I could have a cocktail. The waiter leaned over and said, "we normally aren't allowed to sell alcohol, as this is an Islamic country. However, since you are obviously tourists, if you sit at the table in the back, I can serve you some cherry wine if you like". So we go over to the corner and he brings us the cherry wine in a stone caraffe, along with a couple of tea cups, so that nobody could see the contents. I looked at the tables next to us and noticed there were muslims drinking wine at those tables too. I ask the waiter in a low voice, "I thought muslims weren't allowed to drink"? The waiter replied, "Its like this, Allah does not see so well at night".

As a former mormon holy shit this kills me. Everything about it is beautiful from the writing to the reading to lewis' commentary. The letter writer is superbly honest and dealt with their situation in the greatest way 😆 (I've never formally resigned because they "need" my member number and fuck if I remember what it is, but I left when I was 15 and got stalked with randomly appearing baked goods for months after)
@marelinem5412 жыл бұрын
For a long time, I didn't even know you could resign formally, and it never occurred to me that you needed to. I thought I HAD quit! But then when a mormon pedophile in-law of mine was molesting my child and I told the Bishop, I was excommunicated. No one ever had to ask me for my member number. (I also wouldn't have been able to give them one.) So apparently, they are quite capable of finding it on their own. They don't want to let people out, so they can keep claiming them as members and pretend they have a much larger membership than they really do. I think if they quit counting members that no longer have anything to do with ‘The Church,’ they would statistically be the fastest shrinking religion in America. They do NOT want that distinction. P.S. After confessing to a small portion of what they had done, my in-law was deemed no longer holy enough to teach Sunday school (for one year), and was put into the Boy Scout program (because of course that's what you should do with someone who molests young boys ...) And years later, the known pedophile was still in the Scout program. Since Mormons have now parted ways with the Boy Scouts (over the Scouts no longer hating on gay kids), I suppose my pedophile in-law now works with whatever ‘The Church’ replaced the Scouts with. How typical of religion: We must not allow gay kids in the program, but we will knowingly set up straight kids to get fu

We used to get the missionaries on my street a couple of times a year. The neighbors would call ahead to warn each other. Seven or so years ago, I met up with them in my front yard and told them about my history with the mormon church. (I was raised mormon, and these were not happy experiences.) I never raised my voice, but pretty soon the little twit that was doing all the talking was screaming at me like a crazy person. (His silent companion had eyes the size of saucers.) Finally he walked away while screaming at me "There is no such thing as child abuse, because I don't believe in it." I assume the silent companion ratted the screamer out to his mission supervisor, because mormon missionaries have not set foot on this street since.

In the 1960s mormons seemed to believe it would be preferable for a child to be dead than allowed to commit a sin that would keep them out of the Celestial Kingdom. I remember a mother in a Fast & Testimony meeting saying that she would rather her daughter was dead than to come home from college 'unchaste.' I was a kid and didn't know what 'unchaste' meant, but I damn well knew what dead meant, and my little head whipped around expecting to see the congregation shocked, but instead they were all nodding their heads in agreement.

@David Anewman You're engaging in strawman tactics. Citing a select few power-hungry lunatics in order to support a claim that atheists create religions makes no sense. Atheism is a word that literally describes the principle ("-isme") that there is no ("a-") god ("theos"). To claim atheists create new gods is self-contradictory and fallacious. Anyone who creates a new god out of whole cloth is, by definition, not an atheist.

I decided on my own to be an atheist when I was 13 or 14. It just seemed logical, I didn't look I to other people's thoughts on the matter till I was 18 or 19 and even then it's only because I find the rants entertaining. No one pushed to be either religious or not. I just never really liked the organization, I went to church once when I was like 6 or 7 and felt super uncomfortable and disgusted.

So, I went through a year of tithings and early Sundays just to keep up my personal undercover mission to see the inside of this newly constructed temple and After relaying what I had seen to my friend, his drunk ass chastised me for “Mocking their religion.” ! I was riding a Chicago bus in '80 when I noticed 2 Mormon missionaries getting on, then talking to people of color. They finally got to the back and tried to engage me. I told them just because somebody in your church after 150 years decided they were missing out on getting black people into Mormonism doesn't mean I'm stupid enough to join. I said it loudly. And, proudly. I felt sorry for the little missionaries, but I knew more of their church's history of racism than they did.

Something not talked about much (and it certainly won't be turned into a film that way) but the very first Sherlock Holmes story, A STUDY IN SCARLET, has the Mormon church as the antagonists of the story. Written in the late 1800s (when Mormons were unpopular everywhere) it is about a young man who flees the Mormon church in Utah but they send agents in pursuit of him all the way to England. The young man's story is told in a long flashback sequence.

The funny part is that a lot of religious folks laugh at this and the lunacy of the Mormon's, but they are all equally ludecrus, sort of at least. Scientology and other modern religions are a bit more stupid to believe in. Still, if you look into religious history, you don'y have to be very smart to see that no religion is right or true. Funny part is that evolution made us superstitious as a species, so it is natural to believe in the ghosts and gods. One has to use reason the defeat superstition. I think religions and superstition is holding us back as an intelligent species. On top of the silliness they have all these stupid rules and dogmas that elevate their way of life and makes everyone else below them. That and the lack of reason they bring to the table is enough to wipe out all the good things that faith might bring people. I hope one day that science finds something so incredible that all faiths just disappears and we'd enter a new age of enlightenment. Rant over.

@@lisagulick4144 Yes! A bad person can convince the dog with treats. A goose is not so easily fooled. Their position is that if they don't know you, you need to leave. I always loved that they cause maximum pain with minimum damage. Mine would take a tiny sharp pinch at the back of the knee and give a quick twist, resulting in incredible pain, with nothing to show for it but the tiniest little blood blister that didn’t even break the skin. But it hurts way worse than a dog bite. And people have nothing they can sue over. Fortunately, my geese always gave kids a free pass and didn’t consider them a threat.
