He was Green Beret in Vietnam., but he didn't want to be , only that it was an emergency and some years earlier after he had only just enlisted in the Australian, Airforce , at age 21, his mother named Evelyn , passed away , unexpectedly from he speculated, over use of Vincent's and Bex powders , for headaches caused from her many jobs working as a cleaner. In Brisbane. His father Alfred Ernest, was a truck mechanic for the Australian Army., until the hood over an engine compartment he was leaning into fell and he got spinal neck injuries., thereafter , training racehorses for others and training one of his own , named MY JOKER , that win the prestigious Albion Park Cup , that was the major Queensland race and many qualifiers were from interstate in those days. They initially went to live in a tent on Bribie Island during his father's recovery., and herded a mob of BUMBIES led by Big Coal Bess , from the island , swimming them across to the mainland with William Maxwell in a dingy in from l front towing Black Bess for they'd got a rope on her neck.. and Terry behind on his house and stunning next to it sub sharks taking one or two on the way. . ... so give some credit . .. and The fact that he was so young he supposed , led to his release from his commitment to serve at that time. But years later , during the Vietnam conflict there emerged a situation and a number of people including Terry and his good mate, banned Johnny Wyshe , and some others were recruited, as they were already in a state of fitness due to their various occupations and athletic prowess mental capacity , etc. As such with the documented check already done they left for Asia. It was all very sad but a successful mission begins the lines although ... well, he had medal, but threw it into Sydney harbour. , and following that he was hit by a Volkswagen combi on a highway whilst checking on a blown out tie on a car trailer , having been called on by one of his drop kick friends named Gladdos , and a rich kid who needed assistance they told him, to bring a broken down Carmen Gear back from Gosford where one of their young relatives, was said to have been stranded.. The incident killed him dead in the freeman at the overpass next to Royal Prince Alfred hospital, and a doctor on his way to work dropped and gave him a tracheotomy, and had the two put heads carry him across parkland into the hospital emergency department. , and he life support for a long time and the Greek who ran him down, left the country. So, l like the music to this song , of Mark Knoffler's , but when you realise how on your own you become a better man, in my humble opinion. His girlfriend , Chrissie Betcher was devoted to keeping him moisturised with vitamin E, as he did 600 dollars of damage to the vehicle with his body. Terry had a business in Cronnulla and raced .. things. Tunnel hulls at that time. He owned vehicles and trailers. So, he didn't say alot at all about this and the Vietnam thing was under a secrecy act until the mid 90s. THE WHOLE THING STANK. We met up with one of his old mates who was a pilot for a commercial airline., AND I'M SORRY FOR YOU THAT YOU LOST YOUR DAD, .. but brothers can be good friends , but mostly they're BOXERS for the Airforce., because they are purchased from another military service. You get carried away with your brothers in arms and don't ask about why you're being carried at all. Oh.. sorry, it was Qantas., and that fellow who l only met one time in Cairns, that time in 1994(?ish) , bed just had his physical, and yet , he died a short time later. , of a a heart attack. The other survivor of that mission , was the curator at the Tasmania Botanical Gardens., for many years . So, is that all you've got to say about your father. My daughter misses her dad and so do l , but I'm about putting my trust in Jesus Christ, and doing what l can to save them and beginning myself. Because I'm not an idiot , nor a lier., but only hadn't the time to say it all, at once. Have a day of it.

I remember, towards the end of the 90's, me, a young Moroccan at the time, living in the little-known town of "Taza" in eastern Morocco. I often took the old train towards an other city "Oujda", where I continued my studies. The journey, lasting nearly 3 hours, traversed almost desert-like landscapes, familiar to my eyes. To stave off boredom, I would slip a Dire Straits cassette into my walkman and let their songs play: "Where do you think you're going", "you and your Friend", "Telegraph Road", "Sultans of swing"... But when "Brothers in Arms" started, I don't know how or why, time seemed to stand still. And now, after 25 years, when I listen to this song, all those images come flooding back, and I feel that same sensation. For me, nothing compares to this Masterpiece.

My Dad was a huge Dire Straits fan, he would play the albums over and over. We would go out for a pint and he would put Sultans on the jukebox about 10 times lol. I played Brothers in Arms at his funeral. It was a long time before I could listen to this song again, hits me hard. As a guitar player myself I always appreciated the genius of Knopfler, I grew to appreciate the music more later in life though. Dad never got to see them live, he would certainly have loved it.

I know exactly how you feel Rob. My father was a regular serviceman in the Royal Marine Band during WW2. He played tenor sax and violin. When not on musical duties he aimed the ships big guns (a good mathematician) and was also ship's tailor. He saw HMS Hood sunk by the Bismarck and lost many friends that day. But he got his revenge. He was a big gun aimer on HMS Norfolk and sunk the Bismarck with a little help from his Brother's in Arms. He also escorted many convoys to Murmansk, that was dangerous work but he survived WW2 unscathed and was present when the Japanese surrendered. He claimed to have visited every country in the world with a coastline except the american continent as being a regular he had a long career and took part in many goodwill visits around the world playing on shore at functions and receptions - his band was very good at Glenn Miller numbers. In later life he stil loved all kinds of music, his only stipulation was that modern bands should be able to play their instruments in his judgement. His favourites were Mark Knopfler and Van Morrison, he even appreciated the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. We remember our fathers fondly.

I am a retired firefighter from USA. When I hear this song about the Brothers in Arms, I am reminded of my own Brothers in Arms in the Fire Service. I was from a department that had an exposure to some terrible cancer causing chemicals and most of my mentors and brothers in arms I served those years with are now deceased. In some cases I was on a shift of people that faced all the dangers and death and destruction and now I alone am left alive. He captures the feelings I have about my brothers and sisters, both those who are left behind and those who are gone. But I know the bonds that are forged in such circumstances, and that even though the brothers come from different worlds and many times they are very different kind of people, you know you share that bond of shared experience and trust that is created in time of danger and facing tragedy together.

That cassette was most of his universe. And now, at his 41 listening to it and still loving it. Only thank you.

Dani, I don't know where you live, where you are from, but I feel the same. I'm just 1 year older and Brother in arms was one of the two albums that I used to listen all the time when I was a child (the other was The Wall, Pink Floyd...) I always found this song so...calm, even I didn't understand the lyrics (I'm french) when I was 11 years old as you were. Probably, not understanding the lyrics made more simple to let my mind floating in the universe with the music... Greetings from France Brother in arms!

Don’t think for one second that I believe any of you don’t feel the words, I know you do. I’m talking of a visceral, deep in the bones, feeling. One that goes far beyond just feeling the song. Now it’s so many years since this was released and still I cry when I hear it. Thank you Mark for writing this and for giving such a heartfelt performance each and every time. I love your work.

Missouri Male I just walked through the Remnants Museum in Saigon today. One room was full of drawings made by children who have tried to tell us through their art how they cope without limbs and with their horribly deformed bodies, just some of the 170,000 victims of agent orange, now into its 4th generation of defects. In another room I read there have been 104,000 victims of land mines and uxo since 1975. 18% of the country is so contaminated it will take another 100 years before people can walk around without worrying it will be their last step. Add to this the 2 million Vietnamese civilians killed by the bombings and torture and massacres, the 1 million killed revolutionary fighters, plus all the horrors inflicted on villages in neighbouring Laos and Cambodia. Adds up to a LOT of wasted lives.

I'll be 60 years old in two days time, I first saw Dire Straits live in 1979, last time I saw Mark in Concert was 2019 pre-covid. Hope to keep on seeing him for many years to come. Absolute musical genius.

Come on Susannah and thomas, I'm 69, fortunately have been healthy all my life (lucky). if you're able to excercise, including resistance training, and get a good diet you may surprise yourself and keep on living and enjoying life for many more years.

Never give up. Life is what you make it. At this point you have to let go of negativity and focus on whatever blessing you have received along the way. I'm 64 and alone now but I know when my time comes I won't regret one minute of my life.
