Way back in 1976 myself and a friend found ourselves in the Old Covent Garden in London wandering around the various bars and pubs there. Early in the evening we came by the Rock Garden Bar/Restaurant/Club where there was a bunch of guys unloading instruments from an old van. We didn't take much notice at the time but as we passed the Rock Garden on our way back a couple of hours later we could hear this interesting music coming up from the basement. We stood there for a minute or two before paying our entrance fee and we spent the rest of the evening watching this band called Dire Straights. They were brilliant. You could tell they were a band destined to go places. That was one of those nights where you unexpectedly encounter something a bit special. I've seen Dire Straights a number of times since and they have put on some of the best concerts I've seen (and I've seen a few). They never let you down. Mark Knopfler just gets better and better. Almost 50 years later I'm still listening and I have to say thanks for the music Mark.

I remember exactly when and where I heard the song for the first time: In the summer of 1978, the swimming pool in my home town was being renovated and we had to cycle 7 kilometres to get there. So there we were lying in the sun, life still ahead of us, carefree and light, gifted with music from the most creative times in pop history. It couldn't have been better.

One of the pinnacle songs for guitarists to learn. Just look at the number of covers on KZbin. When it first came out the big questions was, "How is he playing like that?". Before KZbin, before MTV, we could only listen to the album and unless we saw Dire Straits in concert or on television Mark's technique was baffling to a great number of amateur guitar players. It was so joyous, so brilliant, so fast and amazing we could only take the ride and enjoy the mystery. Mark, thanks for "Sultans" and all your other great songs over the years.

How nice that Mark Knopfler has a degree, which means the describes very well what kind of Talent it takes to achieve these things with your fingers. Not every Day is the same feelings, you have to work for it.This lyrical type of Songwriting to expres something and create it for posterity somehow reminds me of Sting and Phil Collins, the other british Intellectuals in the music scene.Thank you very much and what an honor Mark Knopfler that we were allowed to be a part of this.

That is really such an amazing song. And you are absolutely correct about these songs that are landmarks sorta speak milestones. Remembering back when I quit doing drugs and decided to put my life back together. I had an interview for a food server/waiter position at a well known steakhouse in Las Vegas Nevada. And when they told me that I had got the job and when I could start, it was the greatest feeling. After being homeless and addicted to crystal meth on the streets of Vegas getting that job gave me such a massive sense of accomplishment and an overwhelming very emotional wave of gratuity filled my entire existence. It’s a little bit difficult to explain. Anyway that song “sultans of swing” was on my phone In a playlist that I had created. I put on my headphones at the bus stop right outside of my new place of work and that song was the first song to play. And I had never listened to that song as attentively before. Just the guitar and the rhythm and flow of the song coupled with the soul and good good vibes that the guitar solo and riffs create just went so so well with the feeling of victory and accomplishment that I was already experiencing. And that there is a major landmark in my life. Sultans of swing signify when I took my life back and knew that I was going to make it and that I was going to be ok and still had a lot of life to live in front of me. Which is something I had given up hope for years before. It was redemption victorious and what I would think love would feel like if love were to be a feeling that’s how it would feel in my opinion. Thank you for writing this song and keeping the original elements and feeling to it. This song is a part of me and it is a part of my soul forever. I am extremely grateful that you created such a legendary and epic song. Sir you are the man...!

What a wonderfully well spoken guy. Love the comment about iconic songs like “Sultans” - that the song is a milestone/ icon in many peoples’ lives and the player/ writer needs to respect that.

Every time, when I start my car engine, this was the very first song played, it’s been 10 years. Now, I just bought my Model3, this is first song since I had my M3. LOVE IT. Thanks for creating amazingly beautiful songs.

He's right, songs (and bits of songs) are what people have grown up with and landmarked for generations, and that solo in SofS takes me straight back to when I first heard it!

This man is insanely good. His music is beautiful and lilting, almost hypnotic. I went to a dire straits concert and was relatively close to the stage and he plays effortlessly. Beauty in motion.

literally grew up with this song, a radio staple when I was a kid. Fell asleep listening to it many times. Wicked good song! Never loses its appeal, just gets better with age. One of my fave guitar solo bits at the end, brilliant.

It was and still is one of my all time favourite songs for more then 40 years all the way back during my early high school years till now. This song has been with me through good times and bad times and it was always one of the first songs when making a compilation initially on the microcassette though CD, MP3, Ipod. Good music never dies, never gets old and never gets boring. Thank you!
