Hi Mortius! I've only recently stumbled upon your channel and absolutely love the energy and passion you have for music and especially for Six The Musical! Idk if you already know about this but I haven't seen any comments about it yet so I decided to write one myself: There's this song called "Megasix" at the very end of the show which is as far as I know only performed live and not studio recorded - and I think you would absolutely love it! They even say 'get your phones out you're gonna wanna film this' at the beginning so I believe you should be alright reacting to it here on KZbin :D And if you're open to suggestions, my personal favourite performance of this is in a KZbin video called "six the musical megasix 13/10/19e ( millie, aimie & maiya's final show )" by "westendmusical" :)

Anne of Cleves is called the luckiest of the 6 wives. She actually outlived them all! The story goes, that when Anne was shipped over from Germany, Henry wanted to do a test that was popular at the time. He dressed as a peasant and went to the room where Anne was. It was said that the people who are destined to be together will recognize each other even in disguise. As you can guess, Anne didn't. She didn't know a lick of english, let alone this fairytale of soulmates, so when some random man came into her room, while she was waiting for the king, she ignored him. That humiliated Henry, lol, he made a big scene of coming back in his usual king attire, which made her realize her mistake and apologize profusely. After that he started slandering her looks and her body, saying that Holbein painted her prettier than she is and deceived him, from where the story of her "not matching the picture" started. He waited for required 6 months, then, first moment he could, annulled the marriage, gave her a castle and *a lot* of money on the condition Anne couldn't return to Cleves (and tell people of mainland europe of how she was treated) then moved onto her lady in waiting. Anne remained as his close friend and was even called his honorary sister, being only a step under the queen and princesses in the powerscaling. She lived a long life and, honestly, got the best out of her situation

Also i think i just made a fun connection "Dance so hard that i'm causing a sensation" might be a reference to a story of how she and Katherine were dancing together for days during a new year's party, which was a big deal considering it's was a former queen and a current queen who was her lady in waiting (Even bigger stretch, but maybe the hounds mentioned at the beginning were in reference to dogs Katherine gifted her)

As far as I know, sequins and other more glossy-metallic materials don’t glow under dark light, so their color accents basically disappear into near blackness. The thing that makes that pretty much a solid reality? Holbein was a ~court~ painter, sent to make paintings of potential wives for the king. If he had really been faking it or even tweaking, he literally could lose his head for lying to the king. Possibly in a more painful way that Anne did. He was trusted to paint these, he HAD to keep it to reality. He also kept painting for Richard. If the portrait had been wrong, even if he lived, he would never work in the courts again. Possibly ANY court, news spreads. And the likelihood the portrait would have survived and not been utterly destroyed by Richard (who, by that time, had a hell of a raging tempter and not known for handling things exactly in a calm manner) in a fit is pretty low.

There was an English belief that destined lovers would recognise each other even if one dressed as a poor vagrant; Henry tried to be romantic and do just that Anne didn't know of this belief; so she told this poor man she didn't know to leave Henry's ego took a blow that day and it's believed that's the actual reason he wanted to divorce; but he used the painting this g as a more 'acceptable' excuse
@ValentinaB20013 ай бұрын
@@milliegoodwin5389 That's a lie they created to exalt Henry's reputation so he wouldn't look like "The guy who got divorced because of something as stupid as someone's height" (It's literally said in the notes of those who helped), I think we should stop to take that story as "What happened" because it was created to do what he always did, lie about something to make himself look like a victim

Holbein wasn't making his paintings prettier. He was just that amazing of a painter, that he got extremely close to his models looking like they did irl, which made him famous and thought after. Henry's hissy fit over Anne's portrait is actually the only time Holbein "embellishing" his models was an issue, and most likely was, again, just Henry throwing a fit to get out of marriage to her

@@feistsorcerer2251 yeah pretty much, there was a tradition (originating from french notions of chivalry, fun fact!) about love at first sight, where the suitor would dress as a peasant when meeting the lady, and she would either recognize him or be instinctively drawn to him. anne, not knowing this tradition and being reasonably freaked out by some random guy bursting into her room ignored and pushed him away. henry didn't want to marry her after this, but was forced to go through it for appearances sake. henry got the marriage annulled 7 months later, on the grounds that he didn't consent to be married to her (not like he agreed to the marriage and brought her over to england or anything...)

Also, he would visit her often, and they would play cards together. It amuses me that he'd have to walk past that portrait in the entrance way when he did pop by, lol

Actually, it wasn't that she didn't choose to, Anne wasn't *able* to get married after Henry due to how marriages were back in the day. What's hilarious is King Henry didn't say Holbien drew her better than she was. He said that Holbien did in fact draw her true to life and was accurate in his portrait of her. Henry was using the 'she's ugly' excuse cause he was butthurt. He was big on romantic stories of the girl's true love dressing as a beggar and she recognizes him anyway and he tried to do that with Anne of Cleves. Who 1, didn't grow up with those stories, 2 had never met him before, and 3, her maids did not warn her he was doing this. So Princess Anne was in her room and this fat old smelly man barged into the room, dressed like a peasant, and just grabbed her and started kissing her. So, reasonably, she pulled away in disgust. Usually, people pretended they weren't disgusted by him cause they knew who he was, but this showed him how she truly saw him as he met her without introduction and she didn't know it was the King and so she didn't pretend. It was the classic toxic guy who hits on a girl and when she rejects him he goes 'well you're fat and ugly anyway' cause he's mad he got rejected. So while he put down her looks, he never said Holbien painted her incorrectly and said the portrait was accurate. Henry was just bitter that she didn't fawn over him upon their first meeting.

I think my favorite part of 'Haus of Holbien' is the historical accuracy in the listed beauty treatments- make-up absolutely did contain lead, and lead poisoning does have clear, fragile skin as a symptom. Its such a scathing indictment of the historical damage that an obsession with beauty has caused to women's bodies (and the current, on-going damage in the same pursuit, as well). Yes, urine was historically an ingredient in yellow dyes- most of which were used on cloth, but some were used on hair. It was cheaper than most of the yellow herbal dyes- the best yellow herb dye was saffron, which is the most expensive plant/flavoring herb to this day. I'm looking forward to 'All You Wanna Do,' and if no one has warned you about putting up an adult content warning for that song yet, I'm doing so now. I've got a recommendation for you for that song- there's an amazingly well edited animated video (using Disney and non-Disney animated movies for material) for that song. I know that you've probably already seen and recorded for it, so I'm recommending the video "Non/Disney- All You Wanna Do (Rated 15+)" by 2009JoRose. It does an amazing job of highlighting the... historically disturbing events that are hidden under the peppy beat of that song.
@melissahughes42055 ай бұрын
Urine wasn't used as a dye, adding color to hair, instead it was stored until it broke down into ammonia and that was used as a bleach to lighten hair. Stale pee was also historically used to wash linens to get them brighter.

I love this one. Ok, so Anna of Cleves… King Henry lost Jane but was convinced to remarry. He sent the royal painter, Hans Holbein, to paint portraits of women who would be good political matches. He demanded that they be painted extremely accurately with no embellishment. The church of england was presumably protestant, but only in name. Germany, however, had a very successful protestant movement and one of the leaders of the movement was Anna’s brother. As this was being explained by his advisors as he overlooked the portraits, Henry expressed more interest in her than the others and since he was fighting against marriage so hard, one advisor tacked on that he has met her before and she’s a lot like Jane. The manipulation worked and Henry chose Anna. He announced that he chose her because her portrait was so stunning and he would marry her the day after she arrived in England, so all the important guests would be there to welcome her. He was known to be a big romantic, as all of his past marriages included some kind of public display of true love. He planned the same for Anna. A trope at the time about ‘true love’ was the fairytale scenario of a prince, cursed or otherwise in disguise, would be recognized for who he truly was upon true love’s kiss. So since his image was everywhere, his romantic displays before marriage were well known, and the guards would never let any common man get close enough to kiss her, he would dress up as a peasant and kiss her, and she would play along and ‘suddenly’ recognize him as the king she hasn’t met yet. True love. Unfortunately this was an english trope, not a german one. Anna had never seen him before and he’s dressed like a peasant. Due to culture differences, the english guards guiding her had probably responded (or not responded) in a variety of ways she didn’t expect. So when this “peasant” ran up and kissed her, she shoved him away and started berating him, insulting not only his “lower status” and “dirty appearance”, which he had done intentionally, also his age and weight and such. When she was told who he was and what had been planned, she basically berated him for that, saying that if he doesn’t want to be treated like a peasant, then he shouldn’t dress like one. So from day 1, they didn’t get along. He tried to have the wedding canceled, saying that it was false pretenses because she was not as pretty as her portrait, which was presumably why he chose her. She did have an illness between the painting and the marriage, so her appearance may have changed. But historical records say everyone who saw the painting called it a perfect recreation. Either way, royalty from other countries were already there for a royal wedding, so he had to marry her. When he punished someone for it, he never punished the painter, but had that advisor that told him she was like Jane killed. He immediately brought up annulment. She pointed out that an annulment means they were never truly married, which means any rumor that annulled their marriage would make her unmarriagable in general, and the only place she had to go was back to her brother. So he promised her the lifestyle of a queen, but instead sent her back unmarriagable to burden him. He would not be inclined to be kind after that. So when Henry kept trying to push, she said that she would help him get the annulment on the condition that his promise was kept. She would live the lifestyle of a queen for the rest of her days. He gave her multiple castles, she had more wealth than she knew what to do with so she used it to start her own trading business, she never wore the same dress twice, and when she attended court, she did so under a title created by the king just for her - The King’s Beloved Sister. And she could never marry, but she lived the lifestyle of a queen well after Henry’s death.

She was given the legal status of the King’s sister, and a royal salary accordingly. She even outlived noted “survivor” Cathrine Parr. She was definitely the winner in terms of playing the hand she was dealt among the queens.

Mason's little comment on the German used in the song got me good lol "I still don't know what's going on btw" oh sweety you got brought in into the madness of this song with no context I'm so sorry lol "But the music is good!" ~ Mason, 2024

Yes her song not putting her in the running for “had it worst” is immediately lampshaded in the show and her response is “oh nooooo… oh well back to my castle!”

I was honestly expecting Haus of Holbein to become the new favorite for you, but it is definitely a pleasant surprise that Get Down is the actual potential new favorite; speaking out of bias since it's my favorite song from the performance

Alr I have a random question. In Get Down, when they remove Anna’s costume does she stay like that for the rest of the musical or do they put it back on at some point?

She puts it back on during first verse of "All you wanna do", while focus is on Katherine

The corset line bugs me on several levels. 1st and foremost: during this time period they did not have corsets, they had a pair of bodies which were hand sewn and stiffens with either rope or reed. The ideal shape was conical, not hourglass, and it was impossible to tight lace (due to the hand sewn eyelets and the reeds, which would break if you tried to tight lace). The second reason being: tight lacing was not a standard practice, very few did it, and they were seen as extremely vain if they did. The small waists were an illusion created through structured undergarments, big sleeves and big skirts.

I'd have the perfect library hidden behind a secret door. It would have giant windows allowing a ton of natural light to flood the room. It would also have multiple floors you accessed by spiral staircase. There would be lush, comfy couches, armchairs, and other seating allowing for perfect relaxation.

My go to for explaining the difference between diagetic and nondiagetic is High School Musical, because you both get nondiagetic songs where the characters who are singing are actually just thinking out loud or having a normal conversation where the musical scoring comes from nowhere, and songs where the characters are actually singing/performing with the music coming from another character on piano, a karaoke machine etc.
@officialmortius5 ай бұрын
Oh that’s a great point! There aren’t a lot of properties that have both, so I will definitely keep that in mind for future explanations :)

On the subject of diagetic vs non diagetic, in Six the wives are performing these songs to convince the audience who had it worst. The wives are very much aware they died and are performing for an audience. They address the audience throughout the show as well. I think technically all of the songs in Six are diagetic because of this!

Anne got a good deal mainly because she didn't make the "mistake" that Catherine made and didn't kick up a fuss to fight against Henry divorcing her. And she wasn't around long enough for them to reasonably make a claim that she'd slept around with a bunch of the guys in the court, so they couldn't go that way. Also, she wrote to her brother the Duke of Cleves and made sure he didn't turn the divorce into an international incident, and her reward for doing all this was the king making her his honorary sister, giving her a sizable pension and several big manors (including Hever Castle, which used to belong to the Boleyns, hehehe). They even struck up something of a friendship, or at least the kind of friendship one can have with a king.

Whaaat, so no animatic for All you wanna do? :( That's a shame, that song has some of the coolest animatics, in my opinion. That beeing said, Anne of Cleves has to be my favorite of the wives xD While all the others are fighting over who had it worse, she's aparantly just here to have a good time xD

Something I love about Haus of Holbein is that JS and KH speak for AB and CA😂😅because they were the closest thing Henry had to them after their passing. For example: Jane and Catherine were both Catholic and also friends with one another during their years of life despite Catherine not knowing a grasp of English And for KH and AB; Katherine and Anne were both cousins despite Anne being French while Katherine is British❤ She was alive during Anne’s beheading and most likely either watched and/or heard about it. So she was probably watching Anne haunting Henry after they got married, and have zero problem with it. They probably both enjoyed watching Henry’s coffin explode after he died❤😂

something that i find interesting about six is that the whole musical is diagetic- it starts off with the pretext that the queens have formed a band, and are performing together, which makes the musical feel like a concert in a really interesting way. the lute would be better described as non-anachronistic, in that it actually belongs to the time period anne is singing about :D

as an ex-music student, i really enjoyed your explanation of diegetic vs non-diegetic! but i still wanted to point out that this whole show is actually diegetic as well, since it's posed as a concert. The whole gimmick (which, fair if you've forgotten. as you said, its been a while!) is that they're singing to compete to be the leader of the band, they might be describing moments but its always just in singing, not recreating a scene. can't wait to see your reaction to all you wanna do, its my favorite :)

About your comment on "women getting at least something in a divorce [back then]": no - except being sent to a nunnery. Anna of Cleves didn't fight Henry VIII on the divorce - and he rewarded her for that. After having broken with the catholic church to be able to divorce Catherine of Aragorn, he probably would have had problems to force another divorce.

I’m so happy Anna of Cleaves also became a favorite of yours, Get Down and Anna are my absolute favorite song and queen of the show!!! Also it’s so funny how you brought up at the end “isn’t this whole show a competition on who put up with the most B.S.? I think she lost HAHA” because literally right after her song THE OTHER QUEENS SAY THE SAME, and our Queen Anna goes “oh yeah I guess you’re right…. OH WELL, BACK TO THE PALACE! *sassy dance*” LOL I love her so much
