Sam M. Raimi's greatest directorial work IMHO. To string so many richly detailed scenes together... And what about Pat Hingle. Anyone have've seen his terrifying performance in "The Grifters"? Hard to believe it's the same actor.

Western movies are a specialised form of comedy. I wonder if within such there are portrayed glimmers of how, say 150 years ago, people lived in the U.S.A? Possibly in an extremely diluted form?

Makes me think of movies and TV shows set in the 1980s that show every home with pink and turquoise decor, neon lights, and checkered floors--instead of the drab wood paneling and bland carpet we all actually had. TV and movies always present a distorted funhouse mirror of the culture they portray, even it's the CURRENT culture.
