If I were you I would be wearing an inflatable PFD with a PLB and handheld VHF attached to it. 15 miles offshore with no other boats around. If you somehow fell off your kayak and weren’t able to get back to it, you wouldn’t be making it home. I know you are a capable seaman and Ive learned a lot about fishing from your videos. Thanks for all that you do.

Another big factor I know Steve knows is having an effective anchoring system to hold your position if things really go to hell.

Another option... WINDPADDLE. For going down wind. After using one (Cheap copy) I never kayak without having one in/on my kayak. Only mod is, you'll have to add 2 pad eyes just forward of your pedal drive.

Man I really feel for you Steve. On the bright side you have the good pedal drive and you are physically capable of the task.. I;m still working towards my recovery. Glad you could do it. I love your videos Sir, Sitting here in my all about the bait shirt waiting until I can get out. I'll have to think about you not accepting help. I'm sure I would accept help if nothing else was available. I only kayak fish now with a paid guide that I know and trust because I would require help in a situation like you were in. I do understand not making that part of your plan. Thanks for taking me with you today, Excellent video Sir

I once saw a small single engine plane crash off seven mile bridge in a sudden squal that had me hunkering down in the channel outside sunshine key Marina... Heard his sos as flew sideways over my last trying to follow US 1 to marathon.... Coast guard said it was too tough to go out and get him.... Never heard of him again

Been there, done that. Luckily, my motor stopped and I was only about 2 or 3 miles from Key Largo. The hobie fins were much better than paddling.

I had a similar ignition issue with my 2005 Honda Pilot. I fixed it by squirting WD40 into the key hole and inserting and removing the key. Grunge build up on the tumblers causes them to stick. I would insert and remove about 10 times and then squirt more WD40. Every few insertions and removals I would wipe down the key to remove the dirt that comes out of the lock. Make sure you put plastic on the floor as the excess WD40 will run out of the bottom of the ignition cylinder. Repeat until there is no dirt on the key. I had to do this twice a few months apart before the key would work perfectly and the sticking issue never returned. Give it a try Steve.

i dont think the emission system is the problem, do you know that this 2.5 hp outboards has tiny fuel filters ? it clogs easily, when was the last time you clean your filter? i own one that's why i know.

Sta-bil for fuel tank and a spray can of carburetor cleaner. A good 10mm-8mm socket kit, a good long head crew driver, some piano wire or steel leader for cleaning the jet nozzle. That is some basis "survival" for my outboard moto., I carry them with my outboard everywhere i go. Lol... Even thought i use the kit a lot, but most of the time i use the kit for my friend outboard or someone having troubles that i pass by.

Another point of failure on those pedal drives is that cable/chain that swings hydrosails back & forth. Mine failed where the chain meets the cable. Seems like in-line primer bulb could maybe be plumbed into that fuel hose between tank & pump to pressurize flow. @13:42 How long before you noticed your rudder was up?

I don't think Steve is crazy at all, going 15 to 18 miles off-shore. He's very independent, knows his motors, kayaks, equipment, and has years of knowledge, especially in the keys. He doesn't fear anything out there, doesn't panic, and has everything on board he needs. I love my motors, but my fin-drive, paddle, and PFD are always on my kayak. My PFD is always on me. I've never launched without my, paddle, fin drive, extra water, my cell, radio, and my lights. I don't cheap out on other equipment, a bilge pump, headlamp, tools for the kayak, first-Aid kit, etc.I've seen so many fishing kayaks with so much $$ in fishing gear, and kayak accessories, but not one thing to save yourself, or your vessel, in a real emergency. Glad you're home safe Steve! Knew you'd eventually get back. Thanks for the great things you covered in this video. 💯 🛶 🎣
