In this episode we're heading offshore in Lake Michigan in search of steelhead (rainbow trout), king salmon and lake trout with Jon Sowl. We're using a variety of techniques for trolling 6 rods at once, including planar boards, dipsy divers and flasher rigs. It's a lot of work to set up, but it pays off with steady action. Then, back at Jon's place, we're grilling up some fresh fish with a unique recipe.

thanks for another great video, I used to fish Steelhead out here in Washington state and my biggest was 39 inches long and 21 pounds. even tho I'm from Michigan I never fished Lake Michigan. I'm getting too old to get out anymore. it's fun watching too! stay safe, nice of the skipper to let you fight all the fish

Another great video. I've never used the planer boards, but my brother in law and I have gone after Lake Trout and Salmon on Superior out of Grand Marais. He has power down riggers on his old 21 ft. Crestliner. Great fun, but such a different style of fishing. Cheers!

If you make it up that way again, try to find time for some king salmon fishing in the rivers. The Grand River has the biggest, but is the most crowded. The Betsie River has big fish and isn't as many people.

This captain should know there are very reliable methods for setting planer boards (offshore or church) so that it trips and releases when a fish is on, or when you choose to release it to bring it in. On my boat, we go one step further and allow the Church board to slide down the line when tripped, stopping at the barrel swivel connection to the leader. This allows the angler to literally fight only the fish, with more direct positive control, all the way to the net.

When you are bringing in the board give it a little jerk to trip the board so you dont run into other boards when you trip it, it will Slide down the line and stop by the leader and then it will go to the middle of the boat

I grew up on Lake Michigan and after moving south to fish salt for a living everytime i see a Steelie in the 2 to 3 pound range all i can envision is rigging one for a flatline and watching a big Wahoo smoke that shiny thing 🤣 by the way...there is no f'ing way that line broke because you BARELY pulled on that board rod. That wasnt your mistake and whoever didnt re tie was to blame
