That intake is for a spread bore carb. You're running a 4150 series square bore Holley. You're going to need an adapter under the carb or the secondary butterflies will not work correctly and might even jam on the intake. The high idle is probably caused from a vacuum leak in your hoses or more than likely on the carb base. Take some starting fluid and spray around the base of the carb and all your vacuum lines while the engine is running and if you hear the idle change then you've found the leak. The popping and backfiring is a dead give away that it's lean and more than likely it's from the leak.

Hey, it's actually fixed to the frame with engine, but it still has a ways to go before it can be drove around. I do hope he makes that old note a permanent part of the cab though. Fuse it into the inside roof so weather doesn't wear it down.

So true! I've had a few catch on fire back in the day on my 71 Chevelle. And a quick fix for the idling, you can put a heavy duty spring on the front side of the trottle.

Matt! I was talking to my dad about the idle that’s too high, and he says that you may have a vacuum leak, as old cars have a lot of vacuum hoses. Also, you may want to check the coolant, as it turns acidic over time, but the colour doesn’t change.

Hey Matt, that thing causing the throttle to open a bit is a electromagnetic solenoid that controls idle speed when ender load. That means when you put it in gear it changed the idle speed. Same with the AC, will throttle it up when it's on. Just unplug it and adjust the throttle idle stop.

i had the GMC version of this called the sprint. 1977 GMC sprint. it was new back then and was a super comfortable ride with tilt wheel, power windows, locks and AC that could freeze you. central ca. you need it. L.A. to the central valley once a week.

Matt,,,,,its a holley, yes there is a fast idle and a choke idle, you need to adjust the carb, its simple, very simple, its a holley. Check the float levels, adjust the idle, make sure no vacuum leaks.

Hey Matt just a little Tech tip don't use those glass fuel filters they have a bad tendency of leaking around the O-rings or just cracking blowing fuel all over the top of engine and burning cars to the ground also don't use the plastic ones either even though they're nice to see how dirty they are the heat from the manifold and the engine can melt or warp it also causing a leak always use steel filters

I know I'm late but you need to adjust the secondary butterflies with the little screw under the secondary shaft behind the choke on the passenger side. Then you can use actual idle screw and mixture screws to fine tune.

Not a double pumper, it's a vacuum secondary carburetor with duel fuel lines. Good carburetor for every day driving. Might want to check float levels and air mixture screws. Good video.

I believe that you have the vacuum advance hooked up to manifold vacuum instead of ported vacuum. You need to bypass the thermal vacuum switch and hook directly to ported vacuum.

That engine sounds.... Like it was abandon 10 years ago. I would hate/love to see inside that engine. It just sounds awful really. Thats a stock engine. Not a cam. That matters.

Hey Matt -- make the AC guy put in solid ducts .. the drag of the corrugated internal surface, over long runs, will result in lower than optimal flow .. yes, i expect it will be zoned with several boosters .. but solid ducts, bro

Be careful glass filters have had a lot of seal failures. Known for leaking breaking and catching fire. Check for vacuum leaks can cause high idle

Those butterflies were crazy at the Frio a few weekends ago. They were coming thru by the 1000’s!
