1:06 When i was a kid i watched this movie with my big sister, this scene scared her so much she screamed. Which in turn scared the piss out of me and i screamed. Which nearly gave our mom (in the next room over) a heart attack. Precious childhood memories.

Reminds me of seeing the Sixth Sense for the first time. We took a break midway through the film during which time my mom went to change into her pajamas. At the same time my sister went to the bathroom which was in the hallway between the living room and bedrooms. Mom walked past in her pink bathrobe just as my sister left the bathroom. It led to my sister screaming, falling back into the bathroom and slamming the door closed.

I agree. This is my favorite movie review channel on KZbin... out of the nearly 2,000 channels I subscribe to. Basically, they seem to have principles and treat the channel as a passion project, which covers media and topics they enjoy, rather than what is trending.

21:32 I feel so bad for Steve Wang and Doug Jones. It looks like a lot of time and effort went into these. If del Toro ever thinks about doing a Tooth Fairy Film, he should definitely bring them back to redeem this great work which the studio cast aside.

This film has some of the most creepy and effective use of surround sound of any I've seen (heard). When the creature is skulking whispering and moaning about it travels all round the room.

Fun fact about the police station scene. Apparently the filmmakers on this had the idea of the police station attack, however Jeepers Creepers came out two years before and had a similar scene where a creature attacks a police station and some felt Darkness Falls ripped it off

Saw this in the cinema with my uni mates. For most of us, it was just a good monster flick, but I remember it really struck a chord with one of them to the point where he started to refuse to go into dark places. Ashamed to say we kinda took the piss; flicking the lights off when he went to the loo etc

I remember this era of jump scares. Was at the theater with a group of friends, and was seated next to one who was really getting into whatever schlock of the week we were all watching, gripping the armrest. So I held my cup of soda in my hand for about ten minutes, studying the rhythm of the scares. Then I hovered my hand over hers, and on the next jump I grabbed her hand with my own cold and clammy appendage, and she jumped out of her seat, screaming, and proceeded to berate me for just about giving her a heart attack. I was laughing the whole time.

Extremely effective intro kill, unfortunately the momentum fails to hold throughout the rest of the movie. I put it in the same realm as Virus and Ghost Ship (which also has a young Emily Browning) for that reason.

I watched this movie quite a bit back when. I was a kid, and first saw it at like 8 years old, so I 100% understand the "babies first horror movie" type logic with this film, with Darkness Falls being a decent gateway film into Horror, with the movie focusing more on tone and atmosphere than anything else. Great review from you guys. This was a really different one too compared to your other reviews as well. This really felt like you guys were dissecting this, and not with malice, but with an objective view. You two obviously see a movie with clear potential that just needs a few things changed or added, and I enjoyed listening to you too play script-doctor in this review. You guys weren't praising the movie or bashing on it, you guys were just performing an autopsy on a forgotten film, and figuring out why one talks about it anymore. Only complaint is that the review isn't longer, but it fits the theme of this movies run-time as well. Great review again guy. Which platform do you guys stream your podcast on, and is there a way to know when you guys will stream to catch it live?

I liked this because it was an actual horror movie I could watch with my parents. I could have Mom over for Halloween and not worry about F-Bombs or nudity and still be entertained. Gary is right in his comments but a lot of the stuff he rightly criticizes is also what made it family tolerable.

I first saw this once it was on DVD I rented it from my local blockbuster (Fakenham) I felt so traumatised at the opening scene then the whole film was a bit eh.. it never gripped me like the opening.. admittedly I do like the Police Station sequence and I do like the mission to the lighthouse.. It’s just a shame they squandered what could of been a new film franchise villain -,- nevermind ey 🤷🏻 Now review Junk the Japanese Zombie horror I owned on a bootleg vhs 🤫 and then Ghosts of Mars 🙏🏽 I’ll buy you a beer

Wow! They had that good awesome original practical Tooth Fairy design AND with Doug Jones as the monster! WHAT A MISS OPPORTUNITY AND A HUGE MISTAKE! Maybe if they kept with this design and the whole plot being a mystery and the monster revealed until the end, then maybe the film would have done better. This movie deserves a remake and done right! Like it was meant to be. But until, oh well lol

I have such mixed feelings about this one. My sister went to see it in the theater. She returned home, couldn't sleep, so proceeded to tell me about it causing me also not to sleep. It was a few years before I watched the film myself, so had it built up in my mind. Sadly it was underwhelming. Baby's first horror movie is how I would also describe this film. The concept is so interesting and that opening is so great. Even the character set up is nice. Would have loved to see how this film would be without studio interference. It's one I actually would like a remake made with more character building. Lights Out was similar and may be the closest we get to that though.

There’s a movie that I watched around the same time where a girl and her little brother are avoiding the dark (not Lights Out) which I only watched once that I thought was super scary. Can’t remember anything about it except the end which was them in a car and driving into a dark and ominous tunnel. What was that movie? Edit: Another scene I kind of remember is the final “fight” if you could call it that happening inside a house and around a dining room table. Hoping anyone could shed light on the movie. Been trying to find it for like 17 years.
