Does it only happen on the 2.0 ingenium engine or also on the 3.0? Thanks
@APPLEtv4VIERACAST8 ай бұрын
I have an XE with the 2.0D ingenium engine, I found out before buying this car new that this was going on…. They said this happens to owners that don’t change the oil often, like only the recommended every21K / 2years…. I hope that by changing the oil every 3000 miles I can avoid this happening in the long run?!? I also put ceratec with every oil change, and drive the car very VERY gentle!

I have an XF with the 2l ingenium diesel, have had the car from new and serviced every 10k miles or year whatever came soonest with flush and additives. my chain is booked to be replaced in a couple weeks because its knackered even though its been properly serviced, its just a fundamental design flaw apparently im afraid. My car is only 5 years old and 75k miles so you might have a while yet but know knows honestly. The upside is good indie garages stock and will fit the uprated chains when they sort it so the problem should'nt come back again and its one more thing to stop worrying about, £2100 though mind.

@@johnr001 could you please tell me how you knew the chain was knackered? I'd like to know what to look for, thanks.
@johnr00118 күн бұрын
@@russellg3775 on startup you will hear a noticeable rattling noise for the first few seconds if your chain needs replacing, you may also hear a rattling noise on coasting or at random points when driving but not really when under acceleration or stress, always when the engine is under a low load or idling, especially during the first few seconds of a cold start. Also I think it’s probably better to be slightly cautious on replacing the chain as a £2k bill is a lot nicer than an £8k one for a new engine. Hope this helps!

It’s a shame you didn’t do a video of the actual start up noise so people know what to listen for - because without an actual noise to listen for, how is a normal person meant to know?

I think the biggest problem here are the service intervals the manufacturers recommend. Any hydraulic timing chain tensioner uses very fine oil ways to create pressure, changing the oil every two years or at 10-12-15k miles is suicidal, there is no engine oil or no type of filtration system on any internal combustion engine that can keep the oil clean enough. Oil should be changed at 5000 miles max, clean oil never damaged any engine, but contaminated oil does!!! My Citroen Berlingo van has had its oil changed every 5-6000 miles, it’s now done 130000 plus miles and the inside of the engine is immaculate, no varnishing no sludge nothing, I would estimate the engine will do 400,000 before anything is worn out. Yes some new engines like these ingenioum engines seem poorly designed same as the small capacity 3 pot engines that are produced but ultimately cleanliness of the oil is paramount.

So here is the thing - all engines that use chains will need a chain replacement at some point. There are three primary design criteria used for a modern internal combustion engine - Cost, power and durability. An F1 car is big on power, very high on cost and low on durability. A Toyota is average cost, average power and good durability. A Land rover is high on cost, low on power and low on durability. So when you buy one you need to understand this. It is going to require major service items on a regular basis - like a cam chain. Problem is that on many cam chain engines it's not a big deal. Even a little Ford can be done in a few hours without removing the engine. Parts are cheap and it only has to be done every 200k km. Diesel engines are historically exceptionally robust. Truck diesels can keep going after a million km - thing is that these are not "truck" engines. They are "high performance", turbo diesels running on the absolute limits of performance, fuel economy, service intervals, build cost and emissions. And, obviously catastrophic failure :-)

Why is the chain stretching so soon on the Ingenium 2,0 diesel? Is it just poor materials used in the manufacture of the chain? Why are the sprockets wearing down so soon? Poor metalurgy? Is the chain design on the D300 Ingenium 3.0 diesel engine the same, i.e. does it suffer the same chain stretching issue?

Modern engines are now being designed by idiots. Chains in the wrong place involving massive strip down and costs. Old designs used duplex chains , in 50 years I have never seen a broken duplex chain , stretched a little , yes , I would not fit some of these simplex chains to my bicycle. Plastic guides that go brittle and fail...How was this not found in the millions of miles of testing ? The same could be said of wet belts....Engineering going backwards.
@topsteve98983 ай бұрын
Very well said Idiots just about describes it or manufacturer greed driving it.A friend had a fairly modern car where when the (£80) water pump seized , it was on the same belt/chain or whatever which drove the valves etc .The £80 pump failed and then destroyed the engine at £4,100 replacement cost.I often try to imagine the scene (drawing board or meeting) where someone signs that off as a great idea! I'd be ashamed if I was a car salesman, to punt some of this rubbish out , to customers...
