Oh hell no, not another tailstock DRO!

Cheap, easy, fast, but convenient!
There are dozens of KZbin videos on this topic, but still I'm going to try to bore you with my approach. After all, it is a very handy extension that makes working with the tailstock a pleasure, and this small project costs little money (about $10), little time (1.5 hours) and it's an easy job.
A digital readout for the tailstock of my Proxxon PD 400 lathe, without the need for any modification to the machine itself.

A DRO or any suitable cheap arrangement is more useful on the carriage than it is on the tailstock. If you have a DRO on the carriage. Place a tool in the tool post. Set the drill at the face Beginning of hole). Bring the tool to touch the tailstock chuck. Zero the DRO. Move the carriage left for the hole depth distance. Lock the carriage. Now drill the hole until the tailstock chuck is stopped by the protruding tool. You can back the tailstock to clear the chips without losing the reference. Cranking the tailstock back and forth when drilling deep holes is a pain. It takes longer to describe than it takes to set up.

You can do similar thing with cross slide- Also using digital tire tread gauge and small rare earth magnets.... Grizzly G0768 lathe - Cross Slide Removable DRO

Pretty neat. I have a DRO on my lathe, but that does not measure the top slide. Might add one of these to it...

Very neat and straightforward - how do you ensure that scale is exactly parallel to lathe bed ?If not you get sine error - admittedly only .00015 * l per degree. However if l (extension of collar beyond tailstock)is 100mm , this equals 15 thou of a mm.

The vertical parallelism is ensured by the correct height of the clamp around the quill. I have visually estimated the horizontal deviation (simply comparing the edged of the ruler and the quill for parallelism). It is certainly less than half a mm over the total length difference of 41 mm. That equates to a maximum error of about 3 microns, well below the accuracy of the caliper.

A mute button is very useful for my channel if you don't like classical music. All that ripping on guitars accompanied by the sound of piledrivers on steroïds drives me crazy on some other channels, so that's where I turn the switch. 🙂 "De gustibus non est disputandum"
