An unusual coolant system fault on the Jaguar XK (X150)

Its probably the lower nipple on the coolant tank has developed a small crack. I had the same issue: thought it was the small hose, but wasn't. Sacrificed the hose when removing the tank, then realised the whole piping assembly had to be replaced for just the small hose. Here's a post I listed on Jaguar Forums on how to deal with the hose issue: "I also needed to replace that small hose from the tank to the rail, and was also told that I had to buy the whole rail assembly, which I didn't want to do, on principle. Yes, the hose is different diameters on either end. First, I bought a hose at local parts store that had an assortment of various preformed bends (Dayco(?) / Davco(?) part number 8783(7) and cut out the suitable bend section that I needed. To deal with the different diameter ends, I used an old hot-rodder trick, and squeezed a smaller diameter hose stub into one end and cut it flush. Clamped, it's not going anywhere. Voila: needed part for a few bucks and enough hose sections left for other repairs. Years later, no issues".

Just checked mine this morning seems ok cant believe jaguar wont sell that short pipe on its own not having a temperature gauge is not the best great channel by the way

Thanks . Yes I wish a temp sensor had been included. Can't beat having gauges

My 07 is dry as a bone . (For now, touch wood etc etc) and still looks original with factory clips etc…16 year old hoses and no temp gauge are a bit of a worry tho. Typical that Jaguar won’t supply the £5 flexible hose and insist on providing the whole assembly for hundreds, which on my car is mostly metal pipes so that’s not going to fail. (Famous last words) Surely must be possible to find some piece of hose that would work just as well? It looks almost like a short length of old heater hose. I guess if the header is cracked its a different matter. Might as well pull it out and take a look?

Sorry to hear of your hose leak. After my own recent hose failures I decided to have the least accessible ones replaced despite them not actually leaking for peace of mind… the reality is that these hoses are 16/17 years old and can split without warning on a performance vehicle such as this. I would recommend getting a set of those hoses and replacing them for peace of mind… but I know I am wasteful when doing repairs so perhaps there is a more economical solution than just a total replacement of key hoses. Will be watching out for updates on how this develops and wish you best of luck on resolving this long term. All the best and thank you for sharing

Hi! Thanks for an excellent channel about the XK!!!! A BIG WARNING! Check if you have the loow coolant warning sensor underneath the coolanttank! Mine didn't have it and I've checked with a Jaguar workshop, this is missing on the early versions of the XK. I've had the same issue on my early 2007 XK. It was the outgoing tube from the coolant tank that was cracked, misleading a leak from the rubber hose. Recommend you replace the tank a.s.a.p.

had the same problem jaguar wanting me to buy the half propshaft just for the rear Flexible Jurid coupling which had started to crack {2006xk} they said it was all one piece. did a bit of serching and found out the same jurid coupling was used on the s-type and just a stright bolt on. saved over a grand on that! hope you come up with a solution i would certainly not replace all that pipework for a 2 inch bit of rubber. good luck

My Plastic Coolant tank has a crack lower down inside rubber hose.

It's great that you located the leak quickly but the truth is that, provided they have not rusted, those OEM spring clips are actually better at hose sealing than jubilee clips. This means that you do actually have either a tiny split in the hose or a tiny split in the plastic spigot, probably the former. Using two clips has simply clamped the split up but it is still there under the the clips and will probably continue to develop. I would remove the short hose and, provided it is a uniform diameter, or close to it, replace it with a new one. Richard

Thanks for the comment, So far over 100 miles without issue however yes, I'll most likely be replacing over the winter while it's off the road. Running these Jags as they get older is certainly entertaining 😉

A good piece of luck there. Never even read on forums about that hose. The header tank is prone to cracks as is ages. The chap who runs the Just Cruisin channel had a lucky escape as well when his valley coolant hose failed. Apparently valley hose failure is a case of when, not if.😮 Time to check my hoses, again.😆

I know, such an odd fault. All I can think so far is that the clamp had lost a small amount of tension over the 17 years of heat cycles.

Hello fella - I had the same problem, identical car. My advice would be replace the header tank, new cap and hose...👍

Thanks for the comment. Due to the age of the components, I'd say your advice makes sense. It will be something I'll most likely be completing over the winter 👍

we recently had $5000 worth of cooling hose work done on a 1999 x100, replaced basically all hoses, and refreshed other seals gaskets etc, car was still losing coolant because they could not spend the couple dollars extra and use new clamps, the clamp, just like yours, had weakened, I assume from opening it initially, and it was leaking coolant around it.

Thanks for the message, glad you got it sorted in the end. I guess those spring loaded clamps will loose tension over time due to expanding and contracting with heat.

Also think the inner layer of the hoses can perish whilst the outer layer looks fine…

I'm sure I read recently that someone had their hose leak right under the tank. Might have been another model but definitely same hose and leak. Hope it holds out until you can replace just the short hose.

I wanted to ask, you mentioned being concerned about being out on a drive and losing more coolant if you hadn't have given it a checkup, but does the x150 not have a low coolant sensor in the tank the way that the x100 does? I have seen it numerous times dealing with x100 but knock on wood not yet in the x150 so I am not sure, I was asking because the car is on commute every day and I hope that the sensor will warn us ahead of time, I also have an obd temperature gauge, I assume that would warn you even if you didn't happen to check it right?

Yes that's right they do have a low coolant level sensor ,however the header tank needs to be almost empty to trigger the sensor
