The lyrics are supposedly about Ancient Egypt, sometimes the Pharaoh's servants, were sealed in the Pharaoh's tomb, alive. The lyrics are about the servants going insane in there. They are given enough food to survive in there for 4 seasons, in the darkness, until they die. Hence, Seasons in the Abyss. *Update, Tom Araya said the lyrical inspiration came from a Stephen King book, but he didn't say which one.

I think that these guys really are the best of the best that the music reaction type of videos has to offer, giving their honest opinions about each song instead of appealing to the masses by saying they love a hugely popular song (ex. Raining Blood). More often than not they search up the lyrics and are talking about the actual musical composition of the songs on a way deeper level than most! Cheers for you two, I think I speak for the whole metal community when I say you are so welcome to explore everything this amazing genre has to offer!

I appreciate what you guys are doing, actually giving metal a chance and giving an honest opinion of the structure of the songs rather than just being scared away by the noise. I think it's difficult to judge a metal song in a single listen. As a metal fan myself, some of my favorite songs and albums I did not necessarily like on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th listen, yet I kept coming back because of something about them that held my interest. Alot (certainly not all, but alot) of metal takes some time to digest and really "get" because there is so much going on, you can't necessarily take all of it in on the first few listens. That's one of the things I really enjoy about good metal. It's deep and you can be listening to a song you've heard dozens of times before and all of a sudden notice some new facet of it that you had somehow previously overlooked.

The drummer, Dave Lombardo, is without a doubt one of the best drummers out of the 80s and early 90s metal scene. Nowadays there are legions of drummers who are equally or more technically proficient, but Dave Lombardo has a certain feel to his playing that's hard to replicate, and I haven't heard many people who play like him naturally. He is without a doubt one of the most influential metal drummers ever.

The thing about Slayer is... it's supposed to sound like Hell, in a very literal sense. The combination of Kerry King's screaming and wailing guitar is offset by Tom Araya's sort of monotone, droning vocals. It adds an appropriate melancholy.
@jdpc93917 жыл бұрын
That's exactly it! It's thought to be monotone singing. Focusing on the lyrics. And Arya as that kind of voice where even if he is screaming, we can understand everything he says like he was talking. And a lot of song fell like he is talking with a screaming voice.

@andrewhart93107 жыл бұрын
Early on, you guys nailed this: it's a "mood" piece. It isn't overly complicated; it's about nailing the overall feeling of a very dark, brooding piece of classic metal. The droning aspect to the chorus is, I feel, just part of that mood. It's monotonous, detached, unemotional. It's a matter-of-fact recitation of the experience of someone else dying. It's a serial killer watching their victim, a demon not relishing in the pleasures of the act, but simply doing what it does. It's gross, it's sick, and I think it's effective. It's also, like you mentioned, a bit of a let-down compared to the incredible drumming and the darkly sick riffs throughout the song. As an old-school headbanger - which you guys super aren't, and that's 100% OK - I obviously am biased. This happens to be my favorite overall Slayer album, too. I think you guys did it justice, though. Glad you guys liked this; cheers!

Yeh - mood piece - dramatic - the intro is a tribute to black Sabbath - have a listen to Sabbaths very first song - black Sabbath off the black Sabbath album.
@andrewhart93107 жыл бұрын
I think I concur with that. Granted, utilizing the devil's triad predates Sabbath (albeit not in metal), and in and of itself is very common in metal. However, the entire piece is mood-oriented, and I do agree with you that Sabbath is an undeniable influence.

It’s arguably the most accessible Slayer song. It’s heavy as hell, but it’s not super fast like the Reign in Blood stuff. Yes I actually got into rap (from metal) because of early Beastie Boys and P.E. I guess it depends on what rap they are listening to, from fast, angry pandemonic stuff like Public Enemy's 2nd and 3rd albums, to Slayer is a much smaller step than from laid back southern rap etc . Slayer also did a song called Disorder with Ice T on vocals on the Judgment Night soundtrack.

I respect your opinion and totally get where you're coming from with the longing for more melody in metal vocals but in Slayer's case, I actually think it works very well. Most of their songs are not meant to sound beautiful. A good comparison I often hear is that Slayer and metal bands like them are the horror movies of music. They make entertainment out of terror and morbid subject matter so beautiful/melodic voices are going to be far less common in this area of metal (though not unheard of). For the specifics of this song, I don't think of the vocals on this as flat, but rather that they are emulating droning, wailing voices from the abyss they are trying to paint a picture of with this song. The off key wails (like when he sings "go insane") just add to this, making everything feel even more distorted. For me, this is far more entrancing than a pretty voice singing the same thing. P.S. You guys are still amazing and I'm glad you like the song. Thanks for giving this great band another shot!

Could not have explained it better to them myself. His vocals are just chilling in counterpoint to the music. Adds soo much to the atmosphere of their songs. Could not see a melodic singer.. even one as talented as Dio filling this role as well.. tho I could be wrong lol.

Outstanding comment! This is exactly it! They are painting a certain picture here, and the vocals are perfect for the particular type of imagery they are displaying. In my opinion the quintessential Slayer Track is "Angel of Death" from the Reign in Blood Album... which is in the argument for top thrash album of all time. It is absolutely iconic. Their later work has never quite matched the pure aggression of that one. Raining Blood is a pretty good track, but "Angel of Death" will light.. you... on... FIRE. Even if you didn't do a vid on it, you should check it out. It's like trying to judge the work of NWA without listening to "Straight outta Compton".

The sound you are describing as "distorted reality" is actually called "dissonance" in music. The guitar at the beginning was going flat and sharp with slow string bends or whammy pressure, leaving the key the song is in, just enough to create that dissonance, or uneasiness in the music, and yes, a sort of distorted reality... It gives the intro a sort of, creeping insanity feel to it. The idea behind the song is spending time inside an insane reality in your head. There's a story behind the insane reality, but someone already commented that...lol

Angel of death has some of the most vivid disturbing lyrics, along with a legendary change up. (Transition) Next slayer reaction please cover it. Iron Maiden has one of the more accessible frontmen- The trooper or wasted years you’ll enjoy. Anthrax also deserves a second chance- Indians

They may enjoy the middle of the song, but they will probably dislike the rest. It's probably too fast and aggressive for them at this stage. But that transition.... One of the best metal riffs of all time

I think they should try something from Hell awaits... so many transitions great lyrics and Dave Lombardos Drumming shines in this album Literally any somg from this album is a great choice especially Hell Awaits, Necrophiliac, praise of death, and AT DAWN THEY SLEEP. @fyodorkaramazov21367 жыл бұрын
They're like thrash purists so far, so maybe Fuckin' hostile, Shattered, Strength beyond strength... But Pantera without its groove isn't really Pantera... I'm Broken is an important song because it's about the serious back injuries Anselmo had at this moment, triple slipped discs for months, he couldn't stop the tour for it, so it leads to a lot a painkillers, and then to heroin, and then to Phil being an addict and a dickhead, and then to the end of Pantera and the death of Dime.

I'd Love to see Cowboys From Hell

Fyodor Karamazov Yeah, Although I think stuff like strength beyond strength might be barely too much for them, I think shattered or I'm Broken would be pretty cool. I love the super heavy groovy songs Pantera has like Suicide note pt 2 or Throes of Rejection, but we gotta ease the gas on these guys first. And I wanted to add my opinion on one thing like all of us idiotic metalheads do *irony I think Phil is a cool guy now, but back then he was a dickhead. But to be fair he really wasn't in the right state of mind. Okay I'm getting too preachy now. I'll stop...
