The Ohio State Buckeyes crush Marshall 49-14. In my Ohio State vs Marshall reaction and analysis, I will discuss how Ohio State's defensive line was disappointing, and how their skill position players, specifically Quinshon Judkins, Jeremiah Smith, and Treveyon Henderson, were awe-inspiring. Ohio State Football is the Big Ten's best and probably a lock to reach the College Football Playoff. We talk about all of this and more in this episode of College Football with Sam. Ohio State ran a very basic defense and didn't change it just because a few players were struggling. Knowles made them work through it and kept two safties deep. Ohio State was outnumbered in the box nearly every play. Knowles was basically saying our Joe's are better than your Joe's up front and we are going to prevent anything big. It's an air raid offense, and Marshall ran it fairly well. It's designed to really spread out the defense and is particularly challenging on the linebackers, who haven't played the best over the first few weeks. Sonny Styles didn't have a good performance, but they figured it out and shut it down. Ohio State won't play defense like that against a good opponent. Knowles doesn't want to show much against these teams just picking up a check.

McDonald is a NT, like Hamilton, and Kanu is a DT, like Tyliek. Although I think they should cross train McDonald to be a DT to plug the interior, eat double teams, and stop the run. An interior D-Line of Tyliek and McDonald might be required against running teams like Michigan because they shouldn't get pushed around.

I'm not worrying about DL efficiency yet. We haven't seen what the Buckeye DL is going to look like yet. Lots of rotating. Lots of "vanilla rushes". I think that we are going to dominate Sparty this week.

Sam, I appreciate your commentary but the OSU d-line will be fine Marshall had a good game plan to take the buckeyes d-line out of the equation. running out of 10 personnel and releasing passes under 3 seconds. They did loose gap discipline early which was the reason for their ability to run, however Marshalls QB paid the price. For the second time out of 3 games the Starting QB has not finished the game.

I think that the Buckeyes may be the nation's quickest and fastest. Too hard to say. They definitely have elite speed, though. Egbuka is fast. I think that Tate and Smith are faster, though. I'm speaking of the WR group, of course... and Ballard may be the fastest of them all. They have enough speed. What I like about the WR room is that they have been excellent at blocking this year.

It was definitely a weird game, if you had told me before the season that by game 3 almost all of my offensive line questions would be taken care of and it would be d line that was looking sus I definitely would have laughed you off but here we are. Im not sure if its just the game starting to pass Larry Johnson by or he really is having an ego match with Jim Knowels but theres clearly a disconnect between the line play and the rest of the defense in that game. Johnson has always been a bit of a control freak with his room but at this point it is more just extreme stubnorness. He refuses to use anything other than 4 down linemen, his rotations are nonexistent to questionable and it has forced several players into positions they just are not built for. CJ Hicks being the prime example, by all player and coach accounts he is the best pass rusher on the team and a prototypical Baron Browning/Micah Parsons stand up edge but when he gets in the game he is asked to be an off ball LB and looks lost, slow and a wasted body out there. They wasted Browning's talent at OSU and it drives me mad they are making the same mistake again when that change could be a huge boost. As far as the offense goes I cannot say enough good things about the way Chip Kelly has rejuvenated the rushing attack, Henderson looks like a completely different back, is finally hitting holes with power instead of always dancing around trying to bust a home run and Judkins is the real deal. Most importantly though the line is moving people, and even the WRs have been blocking their asses off again. A lot can be said about the level of competition but I have watched every buckeye game for the last 20 years and even against the lesser opponents I don't remember a RB having well over 10 YPC in a game the last couple seasons let alone 2.

How much did the defensive line get pushed around if marshal only scored twice? Especially since they had the ball so much more than Ohio State did. Basically, Marshal got 2 good drives. Am I wrong?
@jimmy5634

You are not wrong. Ohio State substituted backups on the D line freely and played a straight up four man rush with no exotic looks or blitzing. If this dude thinks what he’s seeing is our real defense , he’s even dumber than dumb. Jim Knowles is a master of disguising defensive looks. We’ve seen none of it in the first three games…for a reason.

Defense was slow at the start. It’s forgivable now but when we face the next few teams we’ll need them to be ready. If we can copy and paste the offensive energy we had Saturday for the rest of the season we could be looking at a national title. I mean look at anybody outside of the line and they can make plays. Even our 2nd stringers I’d be confident playing the 3rd quarter against GA

Tylike Williams being out on the interior of the defense was an issue. The reasons my defensive ends get Sacks so much in 2025 is because i use Tylike on the interior to make sure that he takes the double teams from the offensive line, makes holes for the linebackers and allows the DE's to have one on ones to get around the edge.

The thing with the DL isn't Jim Knowles. Larry Johnson lost his fastball. That doesn't mean he sucks. Or even mediocre. His development is off a little bit. Zach Harrison before JTT. JTT is still good against the run. But nearly everyone that comes in for him is much more productive against the pass. So why don't they play more?

LJ should have moved Harrison and JTT inside because they are too slow to be pass rushing DEs. Or he could have kept them as DEs in Knowles' odd man front, with the Jack (CJ Hicks).

I disagree, Ohio State is playing it safe and trying to get the men all running on the same pace. As soon as conference play starts look for Ohio State to run on all cylinder's. They will step it up and do believe in a big way. These men are hungry and focused and I know damn well Michigan is on notice!!!!!

Marshall's starting QB looked good, until he stubbed his toe and refused to return to the game. He was making throws in tight windows and moving the chains with his legs. He looked better then half of the QBs in the B1G before he got scared to return to the game.

It was the lbs that wasn’t up to par Saturday, they spread them out running the qb that’s on the lbs not on the DL & Marshall done what no one has done in spreading you out, MU does not spread you out. Jim Knowles isn’t gonna show anything vs Marshall either & he let the the guys buckle down & play it out

Nah sam akron and marshall did it completely different ways which is why i am calling it flukey. Ohio state came out rested on its laurels and didnt take marshall seriously. Akron didnt push around that osu defensive line at all. They kept throwing into the flats and our dbs were playing off and Knowles refused to adjust. As for marshall we ran our defense as base and vanilla as ive ever seen even against bad teams.

Ohio State played a completely vanilla defense against Marshall., the entire game. Did you notice that? That was on purpose. If you knew anything, you’d know Jim Knowles is a master of disguising defensive schemes. Do you really think you saw the real Ohio State defensive package? C’mon man, I thought you were better than that. Tyliek Williams missing was huge in the run game. They also subbed second string linemen from the get go and the rest of the whole game, purposely. If you saw any of the post game shows they revealed that. They are trying to get a handle on which players will rise to the occasion when needed. I’d say that was pretty smart football. A couple of our backup D linemen would be starters on your team son. You need to dig a little deeper before you reach false conclusions about our D line. If you want to separate yourself from the rest of the “wannabe” analysts, you need to look harder at the whole picture. BTW…if, if, if. is not relevant. If Southern Cal could tackle you would have lost. If, if, if.😂
