Absolutely !! I have been in the business for 38 years now and the customer buying wood to day ( as a rule ) is not just burning wood for heat ! I am changing my way of doing business this coming season to delivering face cords ( never have done that before ) and I will adjust the price to be profitable ! I am in mid coast Maine . I use to do around 700 full cords a year of green firewood but now at 73 y ears old 😮 I only do around 200 full cords ! But times are changing and it's time to change with them so will have to see how things go this year 🤔🤔☺️ P S I am getting into seasoned fire now have been for a couple years now ! Working on getting it under cover so it stays some what dry ! 🙂😉

@ohiowoodburner11 күн бұрын
Thanks WIlliam. I agree with your dad. I can't imagine what goes thru sellers heads when they short someone. How much is a stick of wood worth to them???
@Garrett572xpg10 күн бұрын
I agree Joe. High quality Seasoned firewood and service is worth way more than bulk guys dropping off fresh split stuff full of dirt and scraps. I delivered 2/3 full cord of oak today in -5 degree weather to a repeat customer. I did it today bc i was bored and didn't want to wait 2 days to get paid for something i could do in 1 hr. He always tips me bc i always show up right away with small split 1 yr seasoned dry firewood perfect for their fireplaces. He's got a big log home cottage next to his new big modern lakehouse. Both have fireplaces. Keeping customers happy keeps them calling u back. Proper planning for all your customers helps u stay ahead on your inventory bc u have a general idea of how much firewood u gotta be making at least every year
@Grizzydan6 күн бұрын
I can't get my firewood guy to bring bulk, which is wild.. I want a big $500 dump trailer load and he seems to be happier bringing truck loads. Needless to say I'll be hunting for wood elsewhere this summer. Honestly more and more I want to get back to cutting my own wood again. Main reason I found your page as I want to get back to an old dream of building my own firewood processor. Doesn't have to be fancy. The last one I built was basically a wood splitter with a log table with rollers I pushed logs myself, or stacked up rounds.. This time I have much bigger plans.
@ohiowoodburner5 күн бұрын
That sounds like an exciting project Dan. i met a guy who was doing the same but was struggling finding a good saw motor. He was going with hydraulics instead of using a saw
@reforgedcriterion14715 күн бұрын
@@ohiowoodburner Hydraulics seem to be the best way to go in the long run. Once assembled all you need to replace is the chain rather than put hard hours on a thousand dollar saw. My firewood guy doubled his price this year, and I see free wood EVERYWHERE around me. 1 out of 5 marketplace listings say they have equipment to load your trailer for you. But my firewood guys phone is ringing off the hook. He also never delivers me dry wood. All of it was a log in a pile a day or two before. I think you have a good point about catering to people who wait until the last minute for wood, and are willing to pay for good dry wood NOW. Back home I never thought about selling fresh split wood. Everything was stacked and seasoned for at least one summer. Here I haven't been able to find a single person to deliver seasoned wood. Not like I did it, not like you do it. My wood guys excuse is "dry wood burns too fast" yeah but wet wood creates too much smoke which clogs your chimney and doesn't heat anywhere near as hot! To recap, my wood guy delivers wet and barely burnable wood, has doubled his prices, and his phone is ringing off the hook.. i think there is a vacuum here that is just begging to be filled. I think it may be worth it to start putting up wood again for next winter. Anyhow, sorry for the ramble.

I think that the best advice i can give anyone is to be resilient. Look at what you have and where your talents lie then be resilient. Cut your expenses to an absobare minumum and be prepared to do that for 2 years. Save any surplus then just keep solving problems. I started doing handyman and gardens. Then i moved into doing waste removals. Im hoping to expand into landscaping supplies firewood this year. Its very good advice to listen to the chatter. Be resilient. As one of my mates says, 50 nos and 1 yes is still a yes. He uses that pne in the context of chatting up women though

You are totally right Joe. Complaining is easy and that's why people do it. Sometimes it could be valid but it still never solves the problem. I'm guilty, family members, my employer; you get it everywhere. But that's what separates you from the herd in firewood in your market. I can see from just a logical and even logistical point, where making one trip makes sense. But as you said, a person in business needs to understand the "why" behind of that from a customer perspective. You listen and ask needed questions. That's the difference.

Joe I hate to say this but, if you UNTHAW your water bottle, you are actually freezing it. Next time just thaw it. 😂

Joe, you and I are the same exact page. I sell 1/3, 1/2, full face cords and to many customers that want 2-4 cords. They all pay me the same price per volume. I am full service delivery: wellbarrowing, stairs/steps, and stacking. I even climb ladders to stack shelves. Haven't noticed anyone selling firewood across the country for more than I do. I never say no to anything the customer wants. I'll be delivering tomorrow morning with low single digit temperatures. CL Nashville and you will know my posts. I average close to $20 in tips per delivery.

That is great that this business model works for you, selling smaller quantities.. I can tell you, it is a niche market and not the norm..In my parts, firewood processors sell by the cord and do very well.. Aside from your restaurant customers, most homeowners buy firewood in bulk ( 1 cord or more).. It is just more cost effective for the homeowner..Would you go to the grocery store and buy a chicken leg, breast thigh and wing, on different days all separate purchases or buy the whole chicken?

Every customer is different. I used to work at a grocery store and I would see the same people every day buying their food for the evening. My business was developed by getting to customers who were not buying firewood bc the local suppliers wouldn't bother with them

@ I do the same sometimes.. There is something about spending less more often, we think we are spending less..lol.. I get it.. You know what I mean though.. In ( Maine) were I am, folks would shop around for a cord or more delivered and only come back to less delivered if that was their only option at the time..🙂

Spot on, Joe! Cords don't help my bank account. I get $650 out of a cord selling bundles. Done!👍

You have to provide the wood that the customer needs my first thought was at the start of the video was maybe that is all the space she has. My good friend in the Uk used to do the same. phone him woods on the way, many times i would be at his house the phone would ring and we loaded up and off we went. .

Haha. I have found a few dead spots in automotive and firewood that I thrive in well. In automotive, how many specialty shops only sell their brand. I sell both my own and the Mazda brands for an option. For firewood, I am willing to go to certain places as, for most, it's out of their delivery area.

In my delivery area, many folks cannot afford a full cord at once. I end up feeling bad for them and just deliver a face cord at a time but charge a premium. Sad they have to pay more, but at a slower rate, but I guess that is the world.
@ohiowoodburner12 күн бұрын
That is the way the free market Works smaller quantities is a higher value and makes the wood cost more
