Weird but very good sounding American speakers,....What is inside this speaker?
Conclusion: When you buy a second hand Ohm model F speaker with the original Walsh drivers it will cost you a extra $2800 for a upgrade. When you buy a second hand Ohm model F with a older upgrade(like the speakers I have) you can easy buy these speakers because the only thing what can happen is that you need new foam rings ore tweeter replacement what you can do local for a lesser amount.
The speakers sound fantastic but you need a big room what can handle the bass.

Ohm stopped making the original F speaker in 1984 , they were not able to repair broken ones so they just installed new ones until they ran out of them they then installed the driver from the Walsh 5 now the 5000 onto the old cabinets.( what you have there ) It is not true omnidirectional like the F but can be placed much closer to walls than the F could. There is one company that can properly repair an original Ohm F and that company is HHR Exotic Speakers as they also make new and improved ones called th TLS-1 ( the name F is copyrighted ) Although they seem expensive when considering that the F's cost $4,500 in 1984 and when you consider inflation they really are not that expensive. Hope this clears things up.

If you read just before what you picked out of context it does. How about I add a few what should be understood words .(their upgrade )is no longer a true omnidirectional like the F but but it now can be placed ... IE The original F had to be placed about 8 feet from the wall the update can be placed 12 to 18 inches from the wall.

They need more than just the foam surrounds there is a putty like substance on the inside that keeps the sound waves from traveling back up the cone causing distortion by interfering with the nest sound wave coming down ,this substance dries up and is hard to replace properly also the spyder that supports the weight of the cone starts to sag causing the efficiency to go way down and it is part of a special voice coil.

Really nice video, sir. Ohm speakers and me have something in common. We were both born in Brooklyn, NY. I got interested in hifi in the early 1970's and my humble first pair of speakers were KLH model 31. I have a 1977 catalog from a store called tech hifi. In it lists the Ohm line from that year. The Ohm F speakers sold for under $550 (each). Well out of my price range, I purchased the Ohm model L speakers on Sept. 22nd 1978 for $356 a pair and still use them today as my living room speakers. Other Ohm speakers from 1977 were; model H ($350 each), C2 ($250 ea), D2 ($200 ea) and model E ($100 ea). The Ohm F speakers were sold in a complete system at tech hifi that year with a Pioneer SX-1250 stereo receiver, Technics SL-1300 turntable and Micro Acoustics QDCle electret condenser cartridge for the amazing price of $1,999. I hope you and your viewers found this an interesting bit of history. You are a cool guy.

The audiophile(he also repair audio) who was in my house explained me that the my akai amplifier is a very good amp but not stable enough to drive the ohm speakers because the ohm speakers dip below the 4 ohm. The amcron amplifier is more stable according to him. Not sure why that is and how he knew that because amcron amps are very rare in the Netherlands. You drive them with a pioneer sx-1250, did you ever connect them to different amplifiers? I don't think your pioneer is better as my akai but maybe more stable(as the audiophile articulated). Why is the amcron more stable and what did he really meant with that remark?

@@vintagestereo, the problem with speakers of less than 4 ohms is that most transistor amps (receivers) can't drive such a low impedance. I know that NAD built receivers that could handle a 2 ohm load. I don't know how the SX-1250 drove Ohm F speakers, I never owned them. That was an advertisement in a 1977 hifi magazine. I do know that the older Ohm F speakers needed tremendous power (200w+) to get loud. Not my cup of tea and way out of my budget for components like that.

@@vintagestereo, too expensive for american middle class too my friend. In 1977 my take home pay (after taxes) was $175 a week. Any extra money I didn't spend on pot (marijuana) I spent on hifi components. I was in my mid twenties in 1974 and fresh out of the US navy. Ohm speakers were among the most highly reviewed in the 1970's. As were Polk, Genesis, Allison, EPI, ADS and Infinity.

Somewhere around 1975 or 76 when I got interested in stereo stuff, a friend had the original F's. I remember two things, you needed a stout amp to run them and then to me they sounded 'constrained". All of the sound inside the cone sounded muffled. So what's in that basket on top now?

Is there any tuned port or passive radiator at the bottom of those cabinets? I'd think that that would address the efficiency issues to some extent and if tuned correctly, extend the low end of the frequency response. Of course, the purists would give that up to maintain transient response and avoid the comb-filtering effects of ported speakers.

I've heard the new "Walsh" speakers and they can't come close to the Fs. The so-called upgrade from the three-way single driver to a tweeter with a deflector mounted on top of an inverted more or less conventional cone driver is to me a downgrade. I'd rather pay the $2800 for repairing the original Walsh Driver than buy the newer "Walsh" speakers.

Well they don't manufacture the drivers more than likely don't think so! I don't know who does probably can find out . but there would be an alternative could be better, won't cost you $2,000 no more than $400 for a pair, but realistically more like 20 to $60 each, but I'd need to look at the data sheet for the driver, If You leave me a link to the site of your speakers model. Try and find a specifications for the driver and the crossover specifications , I have a look, see what is suitable. And if I can get the data sheet on the tweeters you've got . You might as well take the basket off and have a look at the tweeters they probably just stuck their own label on top of the manufacture label, plus I'd like to see the crossover that's important? I don't know if you can take a picture of it both sides but at least the component side make a the circuit diagram that will need upgrading the capacitors maybe resistors . Take the basket off take the driver out take some pictures of drivers and take a picture inside the cabinet as well. Let me know and I'll leave you an email. You have to take the grill off the bottom of the speaks grill screws is sandwiches to the baskets at the top of the speaker, has probably got two types of crossover one at the bottom where the inductors are and one at the top, no won't have a speaker in the bottom only if it's vented the not vented, in the bottom it is a closed speaker not ported. Guys talking bs walls driver is a dipole drivers no difference to a normal Drive it's just the term the use for dipole probably trying to get them cheaper if you

I still have my late 70's Ohm F's, having the surround at the bottom of the cone redone maybe 15 years ago. From what I have understood is the other "versions" you show are not technically F's but reworks of the F, removing the original Walsh driver and replacing it with a more modern design that utilizes the F's base. However, they then are not Model F's as the whole original driver is no longer used. Here's some interesting follow-up reading for Walsh driver fans, though not cheap: www.hhr-exoticspeakers.com/

Hi, Im sorry to have to say that you are obviously clueless to how these speakers function. You can not replace the tweeter design by "normal" tweeters. You just cant. Also the down firing tweeters are hand made and matched as a pair. This is needed in order to get the room filling stereo image. It is really unprofessional behaviour to position the makers of these wonderful and very special items, as money sharks, just because you dont understand what you own. As a comparison; if you own a Ferrari F50, you cannot just replace the tires with the same as under your daf 600... It is that different. Just spend the money on the upgrade... I believe they also have a dealership in Germany...

They could probably say 20khz if they loosened the +-db rating, but it wouldn't prove much. Very few people can hear much above 15khz and the limit goes down as they age, so unless you are buying $1,500 speakers for a baby or a dog, it wouldn't make much difference.

I thought I would learn something here but, what a waste of time. You don't know what you have there OR even understand the technology behind the design. Ohm's have custom, special drivers, including the later models, you are not going to be able to repair to their specs without their drivers, Walsh OR otherwise, they are not common drivers. They are still one of the best speakers in the world.

The superb sound makes it worthy to repair. They are far superior to the so-called Walsh speakers that Ohm is selling now. If you own a pair of Fs, don't upgrade them to the new Walsh speakers. There are places where they can be repaired to a like new condition. The Fs were such good speakers that a company called HHR Exotic speakers is building them again. They cost about $9,000 the pair and are worth every penny. Until you hear the sound, you could never understand how real and musical these speakers are. It is like listening to a band from first row center. The musicians are right there in front of you. So lifelike it's uncanny.
