Oikawa's super long is easily one of the best moments of haikyuu. Ushijima's statement of "SEIJOH is bad and Oikawa is the only thing that makes the team good" makes you realise how much oikawa actually does for his team

i have to say, i genuinely don't understand the people that hate/dislike oikawa. for me, he is a perfectly flawed character who i simply love seeing grow. he's a true inspiration.

It's because his jealousy has the tendency to turn him into a bully. I like Oikawa and I sympathise with him because he gives volleyball his all - literally his blood, sweat and tears - but he knows that he'll still never be as good as those who are naturally gifted such as Kageyama and Ushijima. It's totally understandable and extremely relatable, but the way he treats other people, especially the younger Kageyama, is downright mean. Thankfully, as you say, we see him grow as he accepts his limits and develops his strengths. And learns to play as a team, of course. For myself, I love his determination and passion. In that, yes, Oikawa is definitely an inspiration. The end of the match against Karasuno, with Oikawa, regardless of his own safety, throwing himself after the ball, was epic! I dont know if other countries use the term, but in the UK we have an expression "sheer bloody mindedness." By definition, it means to be illogically stubborn and obstructive. But it's often used to refer to the attitude of trying or hanging on despite everything being against you. Disapproval, obstacles, or even your own suffering will not stop you. Oikawa is the personification of that, I think.
@danaeclean1328

@@rachaeljones4850 that was very well said, and i agree. he is a big meanie with the people he dislikes, but i like to see that he grew up and matured his way out of it (at least, a little bit lol). and that expression is indeed perfect to describe his mindset. we don't have it where i live, but i understand exactly why it fits him so well.

"Instinct is something you polish, talent is something you make bloom". Oikawa understood the instinct part, but never understood the talent part. He always thought talented people were genetically different from him, and thought these people were some kind of "monsters" and he wasn't on par with them, but in reality he himself was a genius, it was just that he held his standards too high and failed to achieve them initially. He kept working on his instincts, lot harder than the others, but never made an attempt to mix his instinct with his intuition, which generally blooms into talent. However that changed during the last set of second season, he started to combine his brilliant instincts with his intuitions of Karasuno's gameplan, and when he set the super long "monster" set, he combined them perfectly and that was the moment his talent bloomed, the moment he realized the true meaning of his mentor's words. It wasn't his skills that were holding him back, it was his self-doubt that was creeping on him slowly. But at that moment, he broke free and realized he definitely is on the level of Ushiwaka and Kageyama, and one day will prove that in even more grand manner. It was just that he failed to bloom his talent early on, but was ready to put in twice more hard work for those lost years. As Kita later says in Season 4, "monsters" do the things on the scale of 1-10, and when they achieve the 10, they start doing it on scale of A-Z but they never stop. Oikawa kept doing everything at level 10 for the longest time, but lacked the mentality to think about A-Z, he never took a risk and always played safe when it came to setting, but people like Kageyama and Ushiwaka had the guts to take risks from early on. Oikawa was always a genius, even the people who he hated for having more talent knew this, but he himself never believed this, which was a good thing because it made him more proactive and never let him be complacent. His idea of genius was very lofty, and he kept working hard to reach that lofty peak, clear from the events that happened in the manga when he took a huge risk and did what his mysterious mentor asked, and was rewarded highly because of the huge risk. Thats why Iwaizumi said that Oikawa will forever be the guy who will chase volleyball for all of his life, because he doesn't know when to stop and believes in surpassing his limits time and time again.

Spoiler alert: Best moment is when Oikawa makes his entry in the Olympics while Ushiwaka, Kageyama and Iwaizumi smiling at him and then there comes the Seijoh quote, "Rule the court". It was like a fallen king has gathered his own army to fight against the monsters and reclaim his title as the grand king. That panel gave absolute chills. Win or lose but still he makes himself as the final antagonist at the end.

Especially considering that Iwaizumi is literally the trainer for Team Japan. It's kind of like a homecoming for Oikawa, who is now no longer a Japanese citizen, but whose family and friends are still in Japan. (also yes in order to gain Argentinian citizenship, which he'd need in order to play on the national team, he'd have to renounce his Japanese citizenship.) Oikawa Tooru is coming home in the Tokyo 21 Olympic Games, facing off against friends, rivals and partners alike.

Iwaizumi has always been the one to bring up Oikawa through his discipline. But, right when he’s seen doubting himself as an ace Oikawa is the one to pat him on the back and lift him up. This is one subtle change of Oikawa’s major growth, and the scene was only for a few seconds.

i never heard anyone talk about it but when oikawa made that insane set from outside of the court, for me THAT was the moment his talent bloomed. an insanely fast, pinpoint precise set while being out of form and outside of the court to the other side of the court. thats nothing an ordinary person can do, especially not in that final ralley that goes insanely long. til that point kageyama was the only setter with who was skilled and talented enough to make this kind of monster set, with that speed and precision and oikawa repeatedly stated that he IS NOT capable of doing these sets, since he is not a genius. yet, he managed to do this amazing set, which kageyama (a genius) was known for. that tells me that this was the exact moment oikawas talent bloomed. but unfortunately the match was over and his story ended there. but the thought that all of oikawas dedication and passion for volleyball paid off makes me soo happy for him and is truly something beautiful. and im sure his journey will go on and he will make it to the top. truly a masterpiece of a character. amazing video.

I never considered Haikyuu a story about one person though it’s obvious that Hinata is the main protagonist that we’re putting our shoes on, buy if there’s a character that has enough story arc to have a series of his own, it’s Oikawa. He’s an “antagonist” with a protagonist situation. Can’t wait for the manga part of this. I love Oikawa

I really can't express how proud I am of him. Oikawa is really special to me because not only am I proud of him, he also made me proud of myself. His story inspired me and quite literally changed my life. I used to believe there was no point in putting so much work in my studies because I'll never be as smart as my "genius" classmates anyways. But Oikawa and his story taught me that as long as I believe that I already lose before I even try. All the effort, all the work I put in, it's not pointless. Every step I take is one step closer to being a better version of myself. But if I stop taking those steps and give up, I'll never get there. Ironically I used to not like Oikawa because I thought he was one of those know it all geniuses. I couldn't be more wrong. He's flawed and he's human and that makes him all the more beautiful to me. He went from being a character I didn't like or understand to a character that taught me the most and also the character I love the most.

I love how you tied in the point, "But that day is not today" Before, Oikawa stated that one day, he will be defeated. Now after, even after Oikawa was defeated, he will one day get stronger. That's honestly me with my grades. I observe on how to study better and I try to work as hard, but it isn't enough. I just have to believe that I can, no, I WILL do better, but not to the point of overworking myself. It's the harder road to take, but I will gladly do it.

The first time I watched Haikyuu, I rejected Oikawa right off the bat. I couldn't tell exactly why but, I did not wish to confront him (?) in a way. But, you don't just watch Haikyuu once when you love it so much. Watching it over and over again, I realized s1 Oikawa was the one I didn't like, but s2 Oikawa was beautiful, and it appeared so to me because s1 Oikawa kept reminding me of everything I hate about myself. I had given up, I had admitted defeat to people who were doing better than me and just glanced at whatever I had achieved as I kept telling myself, I would never be the best, so what even is the point? Like I am doing whatever I am doing just because. (Sounds a bit like Tsukki too tbh). But that's the beauty of s2 Oikawa - encouraging teammates, getting Kyoutani (someone most of the team repulsed), his inability to give up during the match, his belief in Iwa, damn. Oikawa very soon became one of my most favorite characters. And honestly, as much as I hate admitting 2D people having this effect on me, Oikawa is one of the 5 Haikyuu characters who really influenced me in beautiful ways. He is so beautifully created and dammit I am not giving up either. PS I believe Argentina wins against Japan at the end of the manga #isaidwhatisaid (the logic being that Oikawa developed better in Argentina since he wasn't constantly around people who reminded him that he's not the best or never will be and whatnot) (Apologies for the long comment once again hehe)

I'm going through all your Haikyuu video's they are simply amazing! Oikawa was an amazing character, but it was his partner that stood out the most. Iwaizumi is my all time favourite character in Haikyuu. You see how he was looking out for Oikawa, but not only that understanding his thoughts. He made sure Oikawa didn't sink in middle school in his depression (can't find another word for it), but he made Oikawa believe in his teammates. He always had Oikawa's back and made sure he didn't do something stupid. The best Haikyuu scene there was, was them walking back. And seeing the absolute believe Iwaizumi had in Oikawa as a setter. He was there for Oikawa to help him stand up and keep going, but what he was in my eyes was a friend, and an amazing one at that. Iwaizumi wasn't the best ace in Haikyuu, but in my eyes the most reliable one. Looking out for everyone, being vocal about it and a strong ground where you can build on. Those flashbacks you saw of them that even though they didn't manage to realise their goal together what you saw was them smiling together. From when they were little children excitingly watching volleyball. To in middle school when they won their match together. To in highschool when they scored the point together. Than his declaration of not losing to him, showing that they both have that hunger of getting better. That fistbump and their smile together always has me in tears. You're absolutely right about Oikawa, but seeing how far het got thanks to his best friend that had his back always. Everyone wishes to have a friend like that, or be a friend like that. Hopefully he will also get a video I will be waiting and hoping for it. Ty for the amazing video's and keep at it with them!

When I first watched Haikyuu I hated Oikawa sm lol, I looked at him very surface level. I rewatched it like a week ago and I love him now, and lowkey I understand him. I’m not that like hard working and passionate as him but sometimes when I try and someone who barely tries does better it hurts. So I can’t even fathom working your ass of for something and having someone who puts in half the time ace it. Now I wanna rewatch Haikyuu again and analyse everything 😭😭😭 I love this man now he’s amazing

Been waiting for this video!!! Thank you so much for the part 1 video of Oikawa! I'm very touched as I feel for Oikawa's character. 😭❤ Oikawa is in my Top 5 Haikyuu character!!! ❤❤❤ I always love a good character development and Oikawa is one of them! 😊 There are many who watch Haikyuu and do not like Oikawa mainly due to his attitude towards Kageyama, some saying that Oikawa is being mean, having attitude issues and not being a good senior to guide Kageyama when they were in middle school. Oikawa may on the surface seem mean but some people who dislikes Oikawa don't fully understand why Oikawa is how he is or the character he has. How Oikawa speaks and acts childishly towards Kageyama, was a character he built up as a mechanism to not feel inferior to geniuses like Kageyama, after Iwaizumi smacks it into him. Oikawa has changed but he still likes to act childishly towards Kageyama because he was just being childish but he does give Kageyama good advise when Kageyama asked. Of course, it is his childish character towards Kageyama that some dislike Oikawa. They are not wrong to dislike him but I do hope people can understand why Oikawa is the way he is before disliking him. One thing I want to point out is how much of a support Iwaizumi is for Oikawa. If Iwaizumi was not there for Oikawa, Oikawa may not have turn out to how he is now. *Hinting maybe for a future videos for supporting characters like Iwaizumi* 🤭

To be honest, when we first met Oikawa, I disliked him (not hated, because even then there was something that drew me in). I'd always known he was gonna get some serious character development sooner or later, and the more we saw of him, the more I related to him. The change in his mindset was a huge one, and it was one I underwent myself a while back to an extent, and you encompassed perfectly here. Could you an analysis for Atsumu, too?

Another great video man. If I may add on top of your vid, I would consider Oikawa similar to basketball players like Nikola Jokic or Luka Doncic. These guys may not be the biggest, strongest or fastest in their size class (in relative to their "position / Role"). These guys have incredible individual skills, even better team orientated skills and leadership. Leadership and Team Skills are not shown on paper but its something that truly weigh in gold and I see Oikawa to score high mark on these two aspects. And we all know Kageyama is not a leadership material (which is fine, not everyone are cut for that) What we need to understand Toru's mindset in gradeschool (7 to 9) is that he was just a kid back than. To him a player was quantified by what people can see right away such as physical gift and individual skill. That's why he had such mindset all the way to Grade 12. Of course, by the end of Manga we'll see a very different Great King or some of us would call.... "K-pop Oppa". Oikawa does remind me of a K-Pop star. ;P

ok i've seen the video, i must say that at 19:15 you point out that the best part of the scene was everything he did after setting the ball, him slipping, his face, the sweat, you can basically feel what he is feeling in that moment, in that game, and I appreciate you pointing that out since it was something I've always thought about, one of my favorite moment of all haikyuu tbh. So once again thanks for this fantastic video.

I disagree with Kageyama almost catching up to Oikawa in the 2nd game. While he was still growing quickly and maybe had better technical ability setting, Oikawa was far and away the most well rounded player on the court.

Spoiler alert for the manga: I love how Oikawa progresses in the time skip. This is a distinct beauty of him pushing even further and testing himself beyond limits. He is not a prodigial setter like Atsumu or Kageyama, and that isn't to brush away the efforts of the latter two, but simply put he isn't a setter that can pull off a minus tempo quick or go on his knees and still set the perfect toss. He is a person who worked blood and bone, pushed his body past physical limits (injuring his knee, and i believe timeskip he learnt to take care of it. feel free to correct me), and has to do whatever he takes to continue pushing forward. But that's fine with him: He's learnt to accept this hard journey and overcome things. Sorry for the long ass rant, but I just love Oikawa. Often at times, I seriously doubt myself if the things I am doing are worth it. I know that I am talented enough to pick up things quickly and learn quickly, but as someone who lacks self esteem and self confidence like Oikawa, it's hard to believe that you can continue and push on. He is such an inspiring character, and it is fitting that the last chapter for the manga was published and released on his birthday. Thanks for reading my rant lmao

WARNNG: POSSILE MANGA SPOILERS!! ok here, listen. Oikawa's real revenge is at the end of the series. In the manga, he and Hinata reconcile in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; where they play some beach volleyball (as that is why Hinata has come there; while Oikawa is there to play for Argentina (he temporarily is visiting Rio)) through playing with Hinata for a week or two, he learns why volleyball is fun again and returns to Argentina with a new friendship and new respect for the sport. Eventually, he does reach ushiwaka and kageyama on the world level, playing for argentina.
