Always take the filter off while the drain plug is still open. A good bit of oil stays trapped up there until you release the vacuum.

You can go with the standard 5w-30, but I personally am going with 10w-40. As the engine has over 200k miles

I always replace my filter while the oil is draining just to let the old oil drain out of the filter housing
