Change the o ring on the Camshaft sensor. I talked to a mechanic that said it will leak and run down the back on the engine and make it look like a rear main issue. Currently I'm chasing an oil leak my self and it it runs down the oil filter but I can see seepage all the way around the oil pain. The rear has a cover like the front timing cover. That's usually the suspect, not the seal itself. If you do decide to tear that apart, aligning the cover and seal around the rear of the crank is critical I've actually seen someone who sells an alignment tool. Good luck. I don't even know where to start with my leaks but I know my oil pan needs to be done. Your video is very helpful because I have a 4x4 just like yours. Merry Christmas

+LTXMITCH I didn't have another crankshaft sensor so I didn't want to break something prying it out...yea crank / cam / oil sending unit are all suspect and I just realize I have to park on a embankment here cause driveway to small so that why I had the oil above the gasket on the dipstick side...I have seen a few of those tools to align the rear main seal boy that would suck after all that work to have the rear main seal leak...Merry Christmas

+RICKAFIX I think if you replace the sensor the computer has to be re flashed with GM's fancy scanners

+LTXMITCH I read that to...that is why I didn't want to force it out...I wonder if that is true or you just disconnect the battery for a extended time

+RICKAFIX Hey Rick... I noticed that you got a few videos up and KZbin never sent me an email notifying me. Putting some dye in the engine could help isolate the problem as you probably have a few small leaks. I agree with most posters that your rear seal is okay, and as you've mentioned, there would be oil all over your flex plate. As for the crank sensor, GM recommends a relearn procedure which requires a bi-directional tool that has this feature. If this sensor, PCM, timing chain components are replaced, it's to allow the PCM to relearn the timing between the pulses on the crank sensor so that the PCM can detect misfires. Each sensor because of manufacturing can have minute differences in the timing of these pulses. If not done, then you'll probably get false misfire codes. Take care Rick and have a great New Year!
@RICKAFIX8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Terry I read a little bit about the sensor but not that much thanks for the lesson. That why I didn't want to force it out just for a possible O ring leak that is a big can or worms that I was not prepared to do that day...I looked into the notices before and it looked good on my end I am going to unsubscribe and subscribe back to your channel to see if that works

Oil on the starter bolts may be an indicator that you have a porosity problem with the engine block near the rear crankshaft cover gasket. It looks just like a rear main seal failure/leak but when the flex plate is dry, it's a good indication of the porosity problem with the aluminum block itself. GM put out a bulletin about it - TSB 05-06-01-034. I think it would help if you Google it and see if it makes sense. Photos of the affected areas are included on the good write-ups. It is fixable (perhaps more appropriately stated as something you can mitigate with RTV, new gaskets/covers, etc. according to the procedure spelled out in the TSB.) I searched for a two-drips per night oil leak for months before I stumbled upon this TSB from GM. I went so far as to replace the entire oil pan, gasket, and cooling line plate w/gasket. Still had the leak coming from somewhere 'above' the oil pan gasket. Alternatively, it could be the engine oil valley pan or the oil sending unit. But once those are ruled out (via mirror, flashlight, or dismantling the intake manifold to get a raw-eye view of it all), it's almost sure to be related to the TSB aforementioned. Hope that helps (if it's still a problem.)

I have 2007 Silverado and have the same issue. Oil on starter bolt. Before I had real bad oil leaks. I changed oil pan and valve cover gaskets. That cut out 98% of the leak. Now the small leak is showing on the starter bolt. But I’m not too worried about it. I’m pushing close to 270k miles and still runs great

@jewllake8 жыл бұрын
When I bought my 06 Sierra new, in 07 I had about 30,000 miles and i had that same leak. It turned out being the oil pan gasket. First they removed the trans and replaced the front pump seal. It may have leaked through there some. They found the pan leaking after adding dye in the system. Once they swapped the pan gasket it stopped. I now have 80,000 miles and no leak. thank god for warranty repairs.

The starter comes out easier if you straight the dipstick toward the block , the dipstick in the way of the starter. I bet you that the leak is coming from the gasket on the rear where it meets the crankcase, since there is a lack of screws to hold the oil pan to th3 block

i love you bro. whoever designed the starter location ect is a asshole. for sure. i changed a starter on a tahoe and it took longer then changing the full engine.. lol. jk but still its a pain in the ass. man i was hoping to find the problem im having. i live in western ky and i just came from cali. but ya it snows here. the other day in the snow i was driving slow but still slid in a damn ditch off the road luckily i was going slow but it was kind of a drop. this was like a few weeks ago. then today all a sudden when i start my tahoe. it just starts spewing oil. like wtf. so its not leaking when it just sitting there but if i start it it starts leaking big time. i tried to have it started and look to see where but its so bad i cant tell cuz its literally just flowing out from somewhere. sucks too cuz i have work tonight but no idea how im getting there im not driving like this. i also live rural as fuck now so have no idea where to even take it to fix it.

Was going to do my oil pan gasket soon. Question is do you have to remove the starter to get that cover off or do you just remove the one bolt to the cover?. Great Video. I ponder the same questions with my 220K Suburban. Hoping my oil pan gasket is part of the problem. Suspecting it's the corners where you're supposed to put ATV sealant which I'm not sure the mechanic who did it last time did properly. Thanks

did you ever figure it out? i am having the same issue. i got a 2005 silverado 4.8L. i threw dye in her and checked, the leak(s) seems to be coming from above the starter, then running down between the bell housing and oil pan then settling just above the oil drain plug. alot of people are saying its a rear main seal, then others said valley pan gasket as well. i peeked in the bell housing inspection hole and the flywheel looked dry but a little bit of oil inside. then some said the crank shaft sensor. let me know what you found out.

hey rick, great video! I have a 2002 Chevy suburban 5.3. I just had a serious oil leak dripping down from the top of the rear of the engine. I'm talking about a qt of oil leak. only when running. I removed the inspection plate and the flywheel is bone dry! could it still be a rear main seal? crazy part is the next day it stopped gushing out oil. oil is everywhere so its hard to tell where it's coming from, but it's definitely coming from the top of the rear of the engine. both side of the transmission has oil coming down it. thanks so much in advance. I GREATLY appreciate your time and help! Ed
