You truly are a master of your trade. I used to deliver oil tanks and boilers for a supply house in North Eastern Connecticut. It wasn't uncommon for me to see 3 to 5 guys on a job installing an oil tank or boiler, but here you are doing it your self. The heaviest boiler I ever pulled out of a basement weighed in at 1000 pounds at the scrap yard. I've also pulled 330 gallon vert tanks out of basements with just one other guy. Down here in North East CT, we have some of the shittiest basements you can imagine. I've gone through houses, into flooded basements, down icy hills, mud septic fields you name it. But i really admire you for doing this on your own. I'm now fortunate enough to work counter sales, though I do occasionally fill in for drivers on deliveries. I really wish you the best of luck Steven. I wish I could learn the trade from an individual like you. I used to work on boats, but i feel like i missed my calling and should've gone the plumbing/HVAC route.

Good job taking care of family! That's what my wife and I did this last month. We traveled to my wife's mothers home. 1st I went three + weeks ago. I spent 4 days 10-12 hrs. Each day replaced the kitchen sink faucets, replaced all plumbing under sink. Did the same in bathroom sink. Toilet and shower. Repaired/fixed 3 electric shorts,replaced five outlets, rewired kitchen lights to LED from florescent. Fixed the stove exhaust fan hood and cleaned, and had to clean the entire kitchen and rebuilt shelves,for food due to mice problem (very gross) she's 86 years old with no one to help her! lives 5.5 hrs away from us and will not move! Home is a old miner cabin. From late 1800's 2nd trip 2 weeks later, wife went to help take her to Dr. Appointments and clean house. Here's the kicker! After wife came home she got sick then gave to me she tested positive with covid!!!! She 10 days in, I'm 8 days in . But her mom is okay??? Go figure! Helping family WOW!

Should have extended the vent to the end of the deck next to the fill. Per NFPA 34 (oil code) the vent must be in sight of the fill- obviously under a deck you can't see it and the delivery driver may not be able to hear the whistle while filling. I worked for a company where there was a spill that occurred in a similar circumstance. Whistle was bad or driver couldn't hear due to the truck PTO running and tank was overfilled- began spitting up through the venting under the deck. Had to call in the EPA for that one.

I had to replace my oil tank recently, starting to ooze around the weld like that one. Probably the original tank from the 1950's, made by JL Clemmey in Mansfield, MA. Homeowners should inspect their tank regularly, a leak can be very costly if oil gets into the ground.

Good job steve. When I change a tank, I pump from top of tank with a stationary pipe, keeping 3" off bottom, to keep pump clean and clean oil back into tank. Also when tank empty top it up on end. Cut in half 30" by 42" diamond. So when your cutting the sludge drops down into lower half, top half is clean. Don't use a combo gauge. I like a separate King OEM guage ,separate vent alarm. Steve your not afraid of hard work. Best.

I have seen more then a few comments regarding why not use natural gas or electric instead of oil. In New England where I am, the terrain is quite rocky and and wet. this makes installing underground services of any kind expensive per mile. Propane and electric cost are also quite high in cost, so oil and wood is still common in many areas. Other factors are strict regulation, NIMBY and lack of current main line infrastructure.

That's what I was thinking. I'm in the Midwest, and while a lot of people used to have oil furnaces (myself included growing up), the infrastructure for natural gas has been in place here in large part since the 50's. I guess the East just didn't put it in then??? Heating oil, and its profits tied to Unions and the Mob too much perhaps, as well as big companies??? Maybe someday I'll look into it.

I was always told to back off the taps and dies a few times to clear the chips, so why did Steve run them hard right to the end? (sounds like it was just screaming, even with the oil)
@johnkrim83774 жыл бұрын
lucash1980 , You don't have to back off when cutting threads with a machine, with good dies and enough oil you can cut without backing off . You only have to back off when threading by hand or if you have worn dies that cut hard, it makes it a lot easier ( I know I cut a lot of threads by hand ) . When I started out as an apprentice the first place I worked out of high school we did the plumbing for any new Atlantic gas stations that were being built in our area. Our boss had a pipe machine in the shop but he wouldn't let the mechanics take it to the job , only so that me and the other apprentice learned to cut by hand. The screaming from a machine is the torque of the motor and some from the gears turning the head. 👷🏻 55 year retired plumber.

@@johnkrim8377 Thank you for your reply! My dad gave me his uncle's old plumbers tripods (bench?) with vices and some dies. Nice job! Alot of work! Your a good man taking care of family members your dad taught you well! Basement oil tanks are illegal in MD but old ones are grandfathered! When the heat pump craze hit here most people got rid of the oil and removed the tanks out of the basement and left the fill pipes in place and many times no one called to stop automatic delivery so hundreds of gallons of oil went into the basement creating a inviromental disaster and basement tanks in new construction were outlawed! I was smarter my heat pump has oil backup for when the temperature drops below 40 degrees! Beats resistentce heat back up with a high electric bill!
@KenKen-ui4ny4 жыл бұрын
Jeffery, where I live, gas furnaces and heat pumps are the top competitors for home heating, we do also have some oil furnaces, but they are far few in between compared to up north, and they are usually in older houses, states well above the MD line where Steven works, Oil is still pretty much king of home heating.
@jefferygrady31814 жыл бұрын
@@KenKen-ui4ny oil heat will remain popular up north where it really gets cold because there are more BTUs in oil compared to gas and heat pumps don't work well below 40 degrees! I have a n older house and oil back up for my heat pump was a no brainier because the tank was already there in the basement and the cost here to connect to the gas line is in the thousands of dollars and electric resistance backup would be cost alot to use! Gas and oil backup make sense here in the DC metro area because it can get cold here in the winter but nothing like where Steve lives !
@KenKen-ui4ny4 жыл бұрын
@@jefferygrady3181 It's also because of the scarcity of natural gas infrastructure up in some of these most northeastern states, so that leaves propane, oil, and wood as top options, and like you mention, heat pumps are almost impractical in those states, due to the intense winters they see.
