Story 1 : the OP was not wrong. That was a horrid family. Story 2: What? NO she was not wrong for walking out with the cake. We do know the back story, as it was in what you read. Ben allowed his mother to put her down at every turn. Commenting on her body and hair and suggesting future cosmetic surgery? No ma’am. And when she tells Ben it upsets her how his mother talks to her he says “that’s who she is, basically, get over it”. They snub her food when she would bring it so much so that she stopped. Red flags everywhere! He KNEW she was baking him a cake and led her to believe he was thrilled about it. He knew how much effort she was putting into it ( groceries, time off work, and effort). Then he disregards her when she walks in with the cake she prepared and is dismissed by his mother who says to put it over there. Ben and his mother SUCK. It’s not specifically about the cake. It’s the disrespect and not having her back that he displays that she hates. I hope she didn’t marry this clown!
@lynarystic2 жыл бұрын
Yep, Don't marry the man in 2nd story. He's already her fiancé, and he still acts this way? A man that does not understand that his wife comes before his siblings/parents, will always willingly let his relatives bully his wife. Its not going to be a healthy marriage.
@srinidhi_112 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The fact that he was okay with his mother telling his fiancè have a cosmetic surgery says a lot about him. I already sensed those red flags in the beginning of the story.🚩🚩

First Story : The only thing wrong that op did was not sharing the real names of those buttholes so people can have free reign to shame them online. If Meg was not ok with how they treat her and Women in general, then holy crap I hope she gets away from those asap. It's ok to be traditional, HOWEVER, it doesn't excuse being a butthole, and by that I mean if you're going to force someone else to be traditional or share those views, you need to just stay in the 50s. Second Story : I truly believe it was more than just the cake. Think of how much effort op had to do just to bake that ungrateful wretch a cake. And all so that other people could eat it. Op baked the bake specifically for that good for nothing fiancé only for her efforts to go down the drain because no matter what he would always be a momma's boy and side with his she demon Mom. Hopefully though she would see just how much of a piece of dookie he is and leave him because she deserves so much better.

My mom thinks the same about women sadly I feel bad for what their daughter goes through on a daily basis
@misachitachibana72142 жыл бұрын
Exactly. The problem is even more than just the cake, she is being shamed by his mother, he knows about it and tells her she needs thick skin because that's how his mother is? His mother is so insolent, regardless of age, everyone should show respect to one another. His mother doesn't want to let her kids grow up, but she can't be controlling those big-ass kids and think she can do the same to the people in the family. What's worse is that he is her husband-to-be yet he fails to stand up for her and protect her. She doesn't deserve this at all.
@darkvoid36472 жыл бұрын
For the 2nd story. I think she was in the right. Ben seems to be the type of person who lives by his mom's expectations. I don't think that's good because it would mean that Ben will always take his mothers side and not defend his fiance. Also the mother likely was happy with the situation because she can use this situation to prove her point that the author of the story is not fit to be with her son. So if Ben doesn't choose to respect his partner or defend his partner. The relationship will likely end. Also the mother will likely only want her son to find a partner who is obedient. This is just based on what I observe in people who live their life based on their family's expectations.
@nuttmare94382 жыл бұрын
Ben should have insisted the cake goes on the dining table too because he was the birthday boy. A homemade cake 🎂 made by your partner has more time and love put into it than a shop brought one and he should have stood up for her and her efforts. I'm pretty sure I'd have reacted the same way

Story 2 the husband should ALWAYS support his wife over his mother. Especially since MIL has consistently been disrespectful. The sons don’t stand up against their rude mom, and now habitually cater to it. If this had happened over and over, then I understand because my ex used to put me down in front of his family regularly even after I asked him not to.

In stories like this, where a friend or partner's family acts up, I can never understand the behaviour of the friend or partner. Like, where was Meg when her dad was yelling at her friend, whom he'd never met before? Why did both Meg and Ben let their parents act like this, or at least apologize. Were they not embarrassed of their family's behaviour? I guess these were the red flags in relationships that people finally identified.

@kathyjoey20002 жыл бұрын
Wow the family actually just paid for the girl's flight and room so she could be the servant during their trip. They rejected the first person because can't have a man cook and the second girl probably because they already knew she wouldn't put up with their treatment. They didn't even run their plan by her because they knew she would decline the invitation as what they are offering isn't a vacation but more of an unpaid cook who travels with the family. You know how long it takes to prep every meal and cook it then serve it. There's really not much time left to relax especially with such a large group of people. She was right to leave and get her own room and enjoy her time at the destination, after all her return ticket may not have been refundable or changeable and they won't see her while she sits in Economy and them in first class. Why spend so much on the flights and then skimp on the food. Probably got mad the cook was enjoying her vacation on their economy flights round trip ticket and she didn't know how to cook. I wouldn't have left with the cake but I would have insist the cake his wife baked be the first one eaten. Also the husband needs to tell his mother to respect his wife and stop nitpicking and criticizing. He acts like such a doormat or maybe he's expecting a hefty inheritance and needs to keep mommy happy by treating his wife as less than. I don't believe you need to put your family on the backburner once you get married. But a polite conversation that firmly cements that happy wife means a happy life needs to be broached.

I understand why the woman in the second story is upset not sure that storming out of the birthday party was the best move but I don't blame her for doing it. Happened to me. I was ecstatic to be invited by a friend to a trip because I was told she needed a companion while she watches over her sibling and her friend (mind you, they're old enough but still, girls so we have to look out for one another). By the time I met up with them, I wasn't informed that the friend backed out and my friend and her sibling mostly hang out side by side and I felt...like a third wheel the whole time. I was alone during the bus ride and even in our sleep, I had to sleep on the ground alone. I just wished I was informed beforehand so I could've backed out last minute. I guess I was just there so they could pay less for the rent? I'm not sure anymore.

It's not about the cake. Ben is a mama's boy that disrespects and puts his partner's needs & feelings aside to cater to his mother. I'm sure there were plenty of instances where OP was demeaned & disrespected by his mother & him. She needs to run, she will always be last.

First story, I can't believe she actually cooked for them. She should have called the police. It's a good thing she had money. Second story, she was wrong for letting Ben back in the house. What? Ben KNEW she was bringing the cake. He KNEW how much effort went into it. It's not like the family didn't eat sweets, they were so highly disrespectful that they wouldn't ever try anything she made. And then instead of saying, "Oh, set it over here, we'll enjoy both cakes," his mother said, "We'll let the KIDS eat it?" They wouldn't even have a slice?? How disgusting! And Ben was wrong for not supporting her. Instead, he's just a mama's boy out to please only his family and not the woman he loves. Op was completely in the right for being fed up with their crap. If he knew she was baking the cake, he could've let his family know in advance before his mom bought one. And if she had already purchased it, he could've had both cakes and actually eaten her hard work. No, she probably shouldn't have left, but I completely understand why she did.

If you ever find yourself stranded in another country with no way to get home and you are desperate you can often offer short notice short term au pair work or pet/house sitting on local fb groups. Some people literally only need someone to come help at theirs for 2 weeks. Its a safer roof over your head that won't send you broke. Just don't do it longer than a few weeks as you may not have the correct paperwork but you'll be home soon anyway. Dont sleep on a park bench. Its dangerous. Explain your situation on local groups. You'd be amazed at who will step up. (I find people au pairs so I see 2 week jobs often) Its very common for holidays to go wrong like this sadly

I come from a family of 8 and cooking for that many people is hard especially if you aren't used to it. My family members take turns and on holidays cook one dish each. Good for her for having enough money to stay and using the return ticket they paid. They are just rude. The second story: She is not wrong for walking out. She is not respected by her fiance's family and her fiance should stand up for her instead of saying she should ignore their behavior. He doesn't respect her. She is the person he is choosing to spend the rest of his life with. It's his family but that shouldn't matter when being a decent human being. You should never put up with that type of environment.

The only time you should refuse (politely) someone's offered food, is when you have allergies or a specific medical reason not to eat it, such as diabetes. It gets difficult when someone has made a cake and you know you can't eat it. Eating even a small piece of cake means having to miss an entire meal. And it's even worse if they offer you the cake in the evening when you are already at your daily limit. People should be mindful of this. it is not polite to expect someone to make themselves ill, or die, by eating your food.

I had to cook for a family of 16, but my husband had to help me because our sister-in-law and his brother love very hot spicy foods. The rest of us can't handle much spice without getting sick from it. So I had to make food for the rest of the family on my own but my husband helped me with his brother and our sister-in-law. The rest of the family was more simple and easy to make(I had to make three steaks, two lasagna, homemade tacos and a small chicken.) I almost got sick trying to make their food for the smell, it was that spicy. They later complained to my mother-in-law about our house being too small and messy. What did they expect since we live in a small two bedroom apartment? Plus we had 6 kids too keep track of, though my dad and my step-mom tried their best to help us. They bought BBQ if we wanted any. It saved us because we had zero leftovers but the BBQ. Had to deep clean my house for a week because my sister-in-laws(their my husband's younger sisters) are known to hide food and forget about it. My brother-in-laws(my husband's younger brothers) love to steal their sisters' food. They won't eat it but steal and tease them about it until my mother-in-law screams about it because they will act like toddlers about it(I wish I was kidding.) So yeahhh. They still complain about our house about being dirty and messy. //PS they don't have kids.//

1st story the plane ticket belonged to her and she can use it however she wanted. Plus if they’re rich they could’ve hired someone to cook not trick some poor girl or force their daughter to cook for so many people 😑 2nd story NTA he’s a mama’s boy and you need to run! He will always take his mama’s side on everything get out now!

1st Story: OP wasn't/isn't in the wrong. Meg's family treated OP like a servant/the help. 2nd Story: OP wasn't/isn't in the wrong. It was/is about more than the cake. Ben never stood up for/defended OP. He allowed his mom to make hurtful/rude/disrespectful comments about/towards OP. Ben will always side with his extremely rude/disrespectful mom. When OP told Ben that the comments his mom makes upset her (OP), he told her (OP) that it's how his mom is and to get over it. At the party, OP saw that Ben's mom had bought a cake. His mom told OP to put her cake on the counter and that the kids would eat it. Ben knew that OP put lots of time and effort into making that cake. I hope that OP didn't marry that terrible man.

The first post. Good for them. Second post. It doesn’t seem to just be about the cake to me. The fiancé doesn’t seem to defend her, even if the mom stays the same. Could be a history of disrespect. She should leave.

I don't think she's wrong for walking out. But I also don't think it was just because of that one incident you know? It was all those incidences of disrespect from FMIL that made her mad but she just sucked it in. It had to blow up one day and it turned out to be Ben's birthday. This is one of the reasons I always immediately express my displeasure about something if I find it displeasing. Sucking it in will only lead to me blowing up one day and then people will say I'm "overreacting"

Do you NOT read the posts or NOT understand them? They kept knocking her down, NO g/f was good enough for her son and he lets his mother walk all over any girl he goes out with. And it was Bens responsibility to let his mom know that his g/f was going to bake the cake. And Bens responsibilty to stick up for her and tell him mom to knock it off. And no she wasn't wrong at all.

Quite frankly, I don't think the mother would care even if she knew that the girlfriend was making the cake. Ben's mother doesn't like. his GF and he doesn't stand up for her, so I can understand why she left with the cake. It appears that he keeps telling her to "go with the flow," without addressing his mother's poor behavior. Just my 2 cents. LOL

For the last story, she was not wrong at all to get upset. She spent money on all the proper ingredients, took time off work and even went as far as making it as exactly how he likes it. He was aware she was making him a cake and chose NOT to tell his mom to not get him a cake and then expects OP to just go along with it. Both him and his mother were nothing but pure disrespectful to her time and efforts and just her in general. I don't give a single *(excuse the incoming language)* fuck about how much his mother spent on the cake, no amount of money spent compares to baking an entire cake from scratch let alone making it to perfectly suit the persons taste. No cake that was bought pre-made from a shop can compare to one that someone made purely for the person in mind with love and care. OP had enough and it's a good thing she left and I hope she also left him as he NEVER stood up for her. She is far too good for the likes of him.
