They also don't handle the same type of scammer. Jim Browning deals with tech support scams where he has the scammer connect to his (virtual) PC, which he somehow uses to get into their own PC and install a RAT (remote access trojan). The RAT is how he is able to keep an eye on the scammer and help victims, but he can only do so while he is connected, and only while the scam is in progress. Atomic Shrimp deals with advance-fee scams, which are generally conducted by email. He doesn't have the same opportunity to get into the scammer's PC that Jim has. I suppose theoretically he could somehow trick the scammer into installing a RAT (say, by disguising it as a passport) and get in that way but I believe most webmail and desktop email clients prevent that, and they might not even be using a PC these days (and if they were it might be a public computer where they don't have admin access).

My experience with Wells Fargo (I have an account there) is that they take quite an interest in fraud and scams. They are a bit more responsive if you have an account with them, though my personal interaction has only been to report phishing messages I've received. Pretty sure I've been to that branch office, btw, as they only have a couple in Lakeville and I used to do a lot of business in the southern suburbs. Pointless, I know, but it amused me.

If only Wells Fargo would take some interest in the fraud and scams INSIDE their own organization (i.e. opening accounts without customer permission ..all fixed we got rid of that employee and paid the huge fine....... a few years later FDIC and/or FTC examining Wells Fargo again ...all fixed we got rid of that employee and paid the huge fine....... a few years later FDIC and/or FTC examining Wells Fargo again rinse repeat....) just out of curiosity i looked up Wells has paid over $4 Billion in fines since 2016...Which averages $1 billion per year just part of doing business i guess...

A) You should try getting more from these specific scammers with one of your different scam baiting emails and use the the Beige Network stuff again and B) have you tried responding to one of scammers when they say My Brother with I didn't know I had a long lost brother and see how far that tangent could go?

Absolutely brilliant video. The way you go through that FAQ is so good. The only problem is those emails will never stop as long as they think scambaiting = hacking the scammers

Why are "be rest assured", "OK" and "thank you" so commonly used by scammers ?
@Geffro2 жыл бұрын
My guess? Probably a normal phrase in their native language, which they don't realize doesn't sound quite right in English. I made the same mistake a lot when learning Spanish, where I'd repeat words/phrases that technically were Spanish but sounded off/weird to the people I was speaking with (especially how often I'd say them).
@kyoobqa2 жыл бұрын
From my own experience, "rest assured" is a little confusing when you first hear it, especially if you learn that "the rest" can mean "the remaining part of something". I guess their native grammar confuses them in some other way, so they try to fill in the gap with another verb to make it sound "right".

If you've been scammed, contact the police and your bank *immediately*. I know a guy who got scammed and from what I understand he either sent money through his bank or gave the scammers his online banking password. His bank did manage to cancel one transfer that was in progress and he got a significant proportion of his lost funds back. If you have just been scammed and looking for advice, call the police and your bank NOW. They might be able to help if you ring them NOW.

Hilarious! That scammer was losing the will to live at the end there, and deserves nothing less. Thanks for exposing these criminals with some comedy along the way. The old maxim always applies, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” They are even trying to find potential marks in KZbin comments! I watch several art channels and they have been trying to start conversations with women there and the artists have done announcements at the start of their videos about this. It’s the “widower veteran who needs money for his daughter’s medical bills and romance” angle. It’s a familiar opener by now but some people are still seeing it and falling for it. The artists are telling anyone affected to send details to KZbin and to not engage with them at all. It’s pervasive, and even if one person in a thousand sends them money it’s making these scammers richer.
@AtomicShrimp Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the really unfortunate thing is that some people who get scammed by some random scammer in KZbin comments seem to want to hold the KZbinr accountable for the scam - in the case of scammers impersonating the channel owner, the victims just don't seem to understand that it wasn't the KZbinr scamming them

I was lucky enough to recover over $700 for my husband's Aunt (in her early 90s) who was scammed by people pretending to be from Microsoft. She told me about being sold a "lifetime support account" for Microsoft Windows. I recognized the scam, and we contacted her bank who took the money back. The last part of this scam was when they called her again wanting to know why she had taken the money back. She said, "My niece recognized you for the scammers you are."Then she hung up and that was that.

I've recently been receiving "weird" e-mails and it occurred to me that, instead of blindly guessing myself, you would know exactly what they're about. They only contain one line of text and, of the dozens I've received, all of them have a unique e-mail address that looks completely innocent. (as in: "just some guys address") What got me curious is that the Subject line and content line always end mid-sentence followed by a 6 character long base64 string. While my inner CTF enjoyer wants to think "if you arrange these strings in the right order, you can decode a secret message", the critical-thinking part of my brain tells me that's nonsense. Other than that, the only thing that stands out to me are the 3 "Smart Reply" buttons Gmail adds. All of these mails have them and it's the first time I've seen them. But inspecting the html source reveals that they are in a completely separate from the message body.

Great video and I have to agree with the comments from yourself and Jim Browning about the small amount of success with these scammers. I tried it out myself and just found that it wasn't worth my time. For the most part if you do get someone on the hook it just becomes a battle of them saying "Where is the money?" and you trying to invent reasons to hold off the payment. Most of them go silent.

I am very happy that this video was released on the perfect day, April Fool’s. You certainly do make fools of these scammers, after all. But, unfortunately, none of this really clears up my concerns about the bits and coins. How do I turn the coins into bits, and how will the wallet turn them back into coins once I send the bits to the wallet’s address? Is this wallet a certified, professional bits-coiner or something?

Another great video! It's odd that the scammer didn't want to receive a quarter of the funds (which'd be over $500 I assume); I wonder how much he'd have raged if you'd have sent him an absurdly small amount like you did with Nigerian Naira. A shame that there's no way (I assume) to safely transfer a tiny amount of money to the scammer's accounts. Also, your voice is so soothing and calm, your videos are my go-to background noise. Have you ever considered publishing audiobooks, possibly of public domain works? Somehow you reading Dickens just seems appropriate.
@DamnedSilly2 жыл бұрын
In some circumstances it could be done safely, but it's a finisher he's used before. The time investment might be more than it's worth. Western Union or even bitcoin might be easy enough, but having to explain to an actual bank that you set up an account, however small, to intentionally get scammed might strain their patience. Oh, and I second the Dickens idea... Great Expectations would be a perfect start.
