OK so I finally watched "A Hidden Life" - Thoughts on the film and Franz Jagerstatter

When I posted an earlier video about why I didn't want to watch Terrence Malick's film "A Hidden Life" (almost a year ago!) a lot of folks reacted negatively to my reasoning. Some of the responses were actually thought provoking so I ended up watching the film and I'm glad I did.
(Here's the earlier video: • I don't want to watch ... ).
The film was beautiful and uncomfortably challenging at the same time. So many of us think we would have the same courage as Franz Jägerstätter, but so few people actually did.

As Tolkien wrote in Lord of the Rings, "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future." No act of resistance is too small or too insignificant to be meaningful. In fact, oftentimes the smallest and most hopeless acts are the MOST meaningful.

I finally saw the film for myself - it was traumatising in a way, but in a good way, if that can be said. Kind of like experiencing the sorrow that leads to repentance. So many times he was tempted, and it would have been so easy to just sign the paper (being 'just words that you don't have to believe'), yet he didn't. He knew the Path and walked it. God has blessed his testimony. I hope I can learn from it, and not just be 'inspired'.

I saw "A Hidden Life" several months ago, and found it very powerful. I highly recommend another Terrence Malick film, "Days of Heaven." Movies like this, or music, or any of the arts, can add a whole new dimension to our lives, challenging us to think and feel in entirely new ways.

This was an excellent video! St. Thomas Moore has a similar story - he stood up against King Henry VIII and was imprisoned and beheaded for it. Even though his wife and daughter begged him to stand down and everyone turned against him, he remained steadfast and said that he couldn’t go against God and his conscience. When on trial they said to him that everyone was against him and that he stood alone. His reply was, “on the contrary, I stand with all of Christendom.” I really liked your insight into this movie. Now I want to see it!

As a Roman Catholic child I was brought up to admire Thomas More too, Leonie. More's moral and physical courage were heroic: he died for his belief in church teaching, rather than playing the wily diplomat and hanging on to his place at Henry's court. As Hilaire Belloc said, More's martyrdom was a lonely one, because many years would pass before England recognized his integrity. What our priests did NOT tell us, however, was that More watched the first Protestants being burned without flinching. *Not only is it right that their bodies should burn,* he said, *but their souls will burn in hell for rejecting the Catholic Church.* Martyn Lloyd-Jones, who led me into the Reformed faith, said there were Christians in the Catholic Church, but that they were Christian in spite of the system. It was the powerful bishops who covered up systemic sexual child abuse. A Roman cardinal can only be questioned by another cardinal or by the pope: I call that antichrist.

@@jackhaggerty1066 I think what you illustrated is at least in part the point of this film. More was in a position of power and influence, and that's the same type of power and influence that corrupts absolutely. Franz Jägerstätter was not a priest. He wasn't a king, or a mayor, or in any position of power and influence. That's why his story is profound. His heart was set on God, and to the degree this film accurately represents his story, he clearly bore incredible fruit.

Glad you finally did and that you found it rewarding. I am a big fan of his work and if you are looking to explore more of his films, especially those that touch on spiritual themes I would recommend: - Thin Red Line - a war film so has the appropriate violence and death, but juxtaposes that strongly with beauty and spiritual longing. - Tree of Life - This one will be challenging but ultimately his most spiritual film, at its most simple looking at the way of nature (fight for survival and dominance) vs grace (love and caring for others). However told in an unconventional style that functions kind of like memory or how our thoughts work. Stay with it. It looks back at perhaps the origins of life and grace, and perhaps to an afterlife. However the main focus is childhood in the 50s. One of the most beautiful films ever made. Every frame could be put on a wall in a frame. - The New World - a telling of John Smith and Pocahontas. Doesn't often get the attention of his other films but it is absolutely one of his best. All the best. PS I cannot speak for other commentators, but I never get mad or upset about these things, just like to encourage people to see things they would likely engage with and have a powerful experience with

I have been a WWII history buff in my own way since my teens. I met a lady who had been a prisoner of Hitler’s regime. She never told me that, but by the number tattooed on her arm, I knew. She could see the tears in my eyes. She gave me her book and wouldn’t let me pay for it. Her name was Maria Linke. East Wind is her book. She passed years ago. What an amazing person. I don’t think I could have the strength that some of those people had. I’m sure they didn’t think they had any strength, but stuck in a horrible situation. I wish people could see the parallels in our current government, that we could easily slip into that hole. Children and parents locked up is only an inch in my book from Zyklon B and the ovens. I have said to a number of people, wouldn’t you do anything to save your child? That man, in the movie, could not live with doing wrong. The guilt would be too much, even though his beloved wife and children suffered for it.

What I was fascinated about with the film is how it focuses on how everyone responds to Jagerstatter. No one really but his wife stands by him, and the film doesn't make it easy to stand by him. The Nazi's don't want to kill this man and give him about as good an out as you could possibly ask for (work in a hospital caring for the injured and sick), and one given what was at stake almost none of us would have blamed him for taken. The logical arguments for moral compromise are only countered with the arguably divine beauty we see and feel at times in nature, in music, in the church, and in the movement of people. They all speak there must be more then logic and practicality. This approach challenges the audience to ask how would we react to this man. Would we support his stand or tell him his life is too precious and his family needs him. Reason says Franz was wrong, but we know he was right. What a powerful film. Thank you for reminding me of these ideas and this excellent film.

The film is beautifully shot and edited. It’s very unconventional from most traditional narrative films. Malick’s films are often described as poetic, and for good reason. The way he composes montages, comprised of small, seemingly-insignificant moments, is so refreshing because most other filmmakers would never even consider filming these “non-essential” shots to begin with. Malick really uses the visual medium to convey a tone and a mood rather than tell a story. He lays the breadcrumbs but you parse it together. His films tend to be more artful, cinematic, and atmospheric compared to the majority of the work we see from other filmmakers. So I’d say the film is worth watching because of the portrait it paints and how it connects to a spiritual core without being so direct. He’s a master and one of the few working directors on his scale to be able to do so. His films aren’t for everyone and they require patience, but if you’re a spiritual person with a love of nature and humanity, I think you might appreciate the film on a deeper level.

Years ago I joined a peaceful protest put on by Catholic Workers. Everyone at the protest claimed to be Christian pacifists. But I can still vividly remember a lady in front of me shouting out during one of the songs, "[President] Bush, I wish you'd drop dead!" Years later I was living in Canada's poorest neighborhood, and my friend Aaron told me about his friend Brad. Brad served in the Canadian Armed Forces and was the only person Aaron knew who hated Mahatma Gandhi ... not because he thought Gandhi was evil, but because Gandhi made his own efforts to work for peace via the military seem bad. One day Aaron and Brad were walking down the street when they saw two homeless men trading blows. Brad immediately ran over to the men, pushed his way between them, and said, "Walk away. I can't let you guys keep fighting. So walk away or beat me up instead." Slowly, the two men walked away, and as they did one of them yelled back at Brad, "Man, who made you Gandhi!" Laura, you said it so well: "Many of us think we'd have the same courage as Franz Jägerstätter, but so few people actually did." Instead of calling myself a pacifist, the best I can say is that I'm an aspiring pacifist, a wannabe peacemaker. The one caveat I'd add: If we faithfully and consistently respond with nonviolent love in the tiny, everyday conflicts we encounter, then I believe we'll be far more likely to respond the same way when major conflict erupts.

It is especially interesting to me when they also chose to stand contrary to the stance that their church was taking. One of the weaknesses of strong church / communal identity can be that we don't learn as readily as we might to stand on our own, alone. In this case, he was making that choice for his family as well, and for decades to come as it turned out. If Jesus identifies something as sin, does it remain sin even if one's church says it is not, or the church leaves it up to the individual to stand or not (probably because most won't)? It has to be one of the most agonizing decisions to make and positions to be in. There is little wonder that they were hated by those around them for so long, having escaped at such great expense the guilt that history has since assigned to the rest of their community.

Very true. My grandfather, who was a believer, stood against Hitler in private and criticised how the Jews were treated by the Nazis. He didn't say it out loud beyond his own home, but in a tiny village like ours everyone knew what the neighbour was thinking and it was very dangerous for him. Still, he was not courageous enough to forbid his daughters to join the BDM (girl's wing of the Hitler Youth) or to reject the forced labourer who was given to him during the war (although he treated him very respectfully). It's difficult to do the right thing if you have to provide for a large family.

@@roesi1985 Peter had to watch his son and wife be crucified before him, despite having the opportunity beforehand to flee. Having a family doesn't preclude those of us who follow Jesus from actually following Jesus. I say this with no disrespect to your family. The position of having to choose from your family's welfare and the profession of your faith is just about the hardest thing I could possibly imagine, because my love for both is so intense. Yet between scripture and the example set by the early church, who were persecuted far worse than any 20th century Christians, the right course of action is clear. We are to trust in God alone for not only our salvation, but for justice as well. No persecution is so great that we are expected to hide our faith when the actions of our days demand it be shown.

@@jdm11060 This story about Peter is not in the Bible, so we don't even know if that's true. It's just a legend. Maybe it did never happen. Yes, Jesus tells us that we should love Him more than we even love our families, but I guess this can look differently to each and everyone of us. It's easy to say what others should or shouldn't do - but the only thing that counts is what you actually do when you are persecuted. And even if we fail, God's grace is greater than our failure. The story of my grandfather teaches me to be humble and not to think I would do better when put in a similar situation. We simply do not know until we get there. By the way, I don't think that ancient torture was worse than what a lot of believers have to go through today or had to go through during the 20th century. Sometimes, psychological torture can be far worse than any physical pain. I guess you don't know much about what Christians had to go through under communist rules, do you?

At the end you state that the film certainly challenged you, often in uncomfortable ways, but I came away not having a clear idea what you meant by this. What I would have liked to have seen you talk about more is whether, and if so how, you re-evaluated your original refusal and whether you now see that stance in a different or deeper light. Conversely, what watching this film, enabled you to see about yourself, your life, and your beliefs, which was possibly previously hidden. In other words, less what you thought about the film and Jagerstatter's story per se, and more about the effect of changing your mind on your previous self and understanding of the world. If you are willing to share this.

Good movie but sadly at end of movie the Director neglected to tell the world Franz was raised to the Alters of the Catholic Church by Pope Benedict in 2007 and is on His way in the process of cannonization to Sainthood. Instead the director chose to put a philosophical quote instead of telling the world this Franz is declared Venerable or (Blessed) the first stage in process of cannonization We can ask Him to pray for us and can be sure our prayers wont go unheeded by Him to pray for us. They were so wrong saying what will it matter what He did. It did matter to God very much to do Good and not evil and fight with Hitler. Also during His Military training Franz became a Third order Franciscan. A lay order of Catholics that people try and follow St Francis of Assissi way of life. Simplicity and poverty while living in the world. Sad Secular Hollywood took much of the Catholic aspects out of Franz life being the Devout Catholic He was He followed His Convictions and conscience and Catholic way of life for Him Priests and Bishops are not infallible and thought they were giving him correct advice at the time History/ God /and time has a way of sorting things out At least Blessed Franz is more well known now because of the movie Wish the movie at end could have showed His real picture of Him too and His 80 year old wife who was at His beautification ceremony still alive. Search on you tube for a mini documentary narrated by actor Martin Sheen to see a Truer version and not secular Hollywood's version or the Director's version and actor/actress adlibbing and you can learn more if interested Scenery in film is very beautiful and very amazing Also tastefully done they dont show His violent death and like days of old Good decent movie making God did give us all brains and we can imagine what must have happened in his horrendous and cruel death. Love story in movie a bit superficial. Doubt they frolicked in the feilds sharing apple's hugging /kissing the day away They were simple hardworking farmers/ devout Catholics that took their faith/religion seriously and proper raising of their children and lived out their Catholic faith in strong beautiful way Now Franz has left an Extraordinary example for others we can do the same Thats why God gives us so many Saints. People have role models so badly needed today to imitate. While we can ask them to pray for us like we would ask a friend to pray for us here on earth. Sainthood means we can be assured that person is in Heaven. This is also a good example needed especially today while strict govt orders come into our world tryin to take away many of our God Given inalienable rights and freedoms Pray for us Future Saint Franz. Thankyou for doing what you did and all the suffering you and your family endured. God has rewarded you abundantly like only He knows how. Ave Maria

For your next Q&A video: since you mentioned that you have doctors and nurses in the Bruderhof and that you send young folks for higher education -- is it common for people who grow up in the Bruderhof community to go to university? If so, what kinds of things do they study? Thank you! Really enjoy your videos.

If you liked this Malick you should check out Tree of Life. It isn’t as dramatic but it’s a wonderful and beautiful meditation on the role of grace in a typical life.

Terrence Malick's movies are all masterpieces in my opinion, but "The Tree of Life" is transcendent. Someone once wrote that "Tree" is a gift from God, and I truly believe that. As a film, I feel it is unmatched. I have seen it in its entirety three times, and there are specific scenes on KZbin that I watch often for inspiration. So many levels of meaning, it's a movie that reveals itself over and over again.

Well and humbly stated; I recognized his principled act and it gave me pause to think fondly about a few of my closest friends who, similarly, live (one might say,) stoically principled existences, never proclaiming their values to the world, and only revealing them as you might intersect them in your association. Academically, I wonder why you initially dissuaded others to not watch the film.

Just had a look at the trailer. The camera angles with camera low in outdoor scenes cause the viewer to feel like a child, as if Franz and Fanny are our own parents. That's part of how we connect so readily with the actors. Then the camera is only at head level in the court with the Nazis, so they seem diminished by comparison. Clever method of manipulating emotions with a camera, and one that all fashion photographers use very very often, and very well....so very subtle they do it as that we'd hardly notice. Malick has been very overt about the technique which is a breath of fresh air, to see a less manipulative use of the technique.

Something I'd find really hard to give up would be certain interests like watching movies/TV shows, or even playing chess online. You talk here about choosing to watch this film and in the past referenced random things like 'baby shark doo doo doo doo doo doo' but I've heard people don't have TVs or use the internet at home, so I'm wondering how much opportunity people at the Bruderhof actually get to watch media or play video games or whatever? How restricted are such things? Thanks, and happy new year.

I tried to watch it, got about half way through - I could only watch it in about 5 - 20 minutes sections, as I found it so intense, and depressing! In the end I gave up, I just thought there is enough challenges in one's own life - why watch the long drawn out sufferings of others as well! I prefer to watch something more light, and inspiring, like a Studio Ghibli film 😊

How absolutely disgraceful. Not content with allowing their nation to be quite willingly gobbled up by the unbearable Hitler, Austrians had the gall and temerity, after SO many of their compatriots committed utterly disgusting crimes throughout the war years ( AND priorly ), to persecute and ostracize the family of a wonderful man. Shame, shame.
