Little Bird you ask, why do you think she’s the ONLY Bruderhof member with a KZbin channel? I don’t know if she is or isn’t the only member with a channel. I found her channel after watching the BBC program. There may be others. I’ll do a search when I have time. If people are not being held against their will, I am in favour of letting them live in peace. If their beliefs differ from mine, so be it. If I were inclined to interfere in some other groups belief system, it would probably be a group that compels women to wear burquas, or one that throws gays off of rooftops, or practices FGM, or leads to honour killings of young women who want to marry the partner of their choice. If the B are doing any of that, then close them down.

I think what most are asking is why do men look like they could easily blend in with the rest of the world in 2020, but the women's wardrobe is very dated and amish-esque? You can buy or make plain, moden, modest women's clothing. Why aren't the men dressing more plain, like only button downs and trousers?
@BhappyD4 жыл бұрын
Rebekah Bryant What I have heard from several of the Bruderhof women in response to this question, including Laura, is this is just the style that they most prefer. They don’t seem to care if they look “outdated” or don’t blend in with the rest of society, nor do they care if the men wear clothes that do blend in more. It’s hard for us on the outside to understand because we are so used to the way we live, and it’s a similar mindset of theirs that they don’t understand us and our attraction to modern clothing or flashier clothing because they are so used to the way they live as well. The way they dress is what they are used to and it’s what they have always known. It’s comfortable to them, and from their point of view they don’t see any practical need to change things and conform to modern society if they are happy the way things are. It may look old fashioned and plain, but it’s what they desire to wear, and they don’t seem to care at all about how it looks to the outside world. As long as they are happy with the way they dress and are choosing this life freely for themselves, I don’t see why it should bother anyone. Clothing to them holds no value other than practicality and modesty; a foreign concept to us, but a comforting and welcomed concept to them. I could certainly learn a lot from them and their rejection of materialism and their non-conformity to modern capitalistic society’s ever-changing trends. We all could.

I feel the same. It is the button down shirt and the head covering, that evoke the old times. And to me it seems almost intentional. Of course you can say that women's clothes changes more than men's clothes. But I also have some pieces maybe for 10 years now and still I don't look like from another century. And since they buy clothes from today's shops for men (jeans, t shirts with pictures), they could buy also skirts and simple t-shirts for women. @AnnieDiscepoli4 жыл бұрын
One way to think about it is that modest clothes are not distracting to others. Modest clothes don't catch the eye of people because they are plain and not form fitting. As a female, I find it almost impossible to find a pair of trousers that aren't form fitting. Women's pants are often tight and revealing in order to attract attention and not necessarily because they are more comfortable for the wearer. Skirts are actually quite comfortable and freeing, although to someone who is not used to wearing them there would be an adjustment period.

When you have no income on your own, then you depend on the community and some people rule the community and others have no choice but to obey. Abuse seems likely to me. I love how well and yet concise you answered all the questions. I kind of expected all the answers as such- been reading about Bruderhof a lot . Only news to me is the head covering change- I noticed in last couple videos that some ladies do not wear them. I think that is a good choice to have, not necessarily for the vanity or “”modern “ reasons, but more because I know that constant wear of tight head coverings can actually create some permanent hear loss( personal experience). I love your simplicity, have huge respect for Bruderhofs pacifism and for trying to contribute as well as be an example of better life to this messy world. Keep up the good work!

I'm glad you mentioned, what was left out in the documentary and talk about the way things are handled in your community. It is a thing, that happens quite often sadly, due to a lack of time or research or just the fact, that the person in charge want to prove his point of view and not all the facts. The way of living in a Bruderhofgemeinde isn't my way of living, but I deeply respect your way to live together. I think in many ways we could and should take some of your way of living together, sharing and keeping the materialistic things of live simple into our own lives. Because cool stuff won't make you happy, but a meaning in life does. I stumbled across your channel, because I watched the documentary, that was recommendet to me. I admire your patience and generosity in taking time to answer so many questions. I have always pondered how it would be to create less formal faith communities in an urban setting, or even multi faith communities of care. One thing that is happening in my area is the development of Mutual Aid Societies throughout our capitol city, where people help one another with basic needs, even dog food or pampers, etc.Help out folks in pther ways as well, clearing snow, etc.

This is great information. Thanks for answering questions. I find that "documentaries" ultimately steer the viewer in one direction or another, and by leaving things out or only focusing on one aspect of life, they can miss the whole story. I wish they were more about showing the truth and less about selling the narrative. Again, thank you for your time to answer these questions.

I stumbled upon your channel by accident and feel I've learned so much by watching several of your videos, thank you for taking the time to make them! I understand the modesty part and not wanting to buy into the fashion industry or even giving your clothes too much thought, and I completely see how that could be oh so liberating in a way. But I still struggle to understand why modest (both in the sense of covering up and not showing off) and cost effective have to mean, for lack of a better wording, unflattering. That actually boggles my mind way more than shopping a communal closet, possessing just enough outfits for one week, only wearing skirts, choosing to cover one's head or getting married in your everyday clothing. Still, loving your videos and could listen to you talk for hours!

I saw the documentary being advertised here in the uk and then I saw your channel and thought ‘hey I’ve heard of the bruderhof let’s see what this is about’ and many hours later I’d become somewhat knowledgeable. And therefore I felt quite frustrated watching the documentary as they seemed not quite bias but almost as if they didn’t ask questions they knew the answers to as it would skew the tone of the documentary. Very interesting! Also as a fashion design student I feel quite enlightened towards my look at my future path, still in love with fashion and creativity but less involved in the corporate scheme.

@dave dude Hey Dave, you don't come accross as someone who wants to understand people, but someone who has been hurt a lot by people and has a lot of anger because of this. Why do you so clumsily go for shock value, how would that make you feel better about yourself? Why do you allign how you dress with who you are, a piece of clothing defining you? That would be kind of limiting and taking an impoverished look on who you are, would it not?
@voiceover21914 жыл бұрын
@dave dude Hey Dave, I have no use for labels, how would that enrich my life? Labels are crutches that create an illusion of self-identification, rather silly to my mind. I expressed an impression you made, so sure I could be totally wrong in which case I apologize if it offended you. I don't know what that means "awakened"? It presupooses I was asleep before and I don't know how I would determine that, seems more like a judgment other people make about you and not something that would make sense to do to myself, so that terminology I have to leave with you. As for your advice, I'll gladly take it, to strive to become wiser sounds like a good idea at all times.

I am still not seeing the very basic question addressed: why are women dressed in clothing that marks them as different in normal society whereas men are not? Women could just as well dress in inexpensive, plain maxi-dresses as many other women who dress modestly and plainly do, but instead you are wearing clothing that actually seems more "complicated" in its old fashionedness, with buttons and collars and pleats and such. Meanwhile, the men can live "invisibly" in outside society (and come on - jeans are expensive!). This seems like an issue of control and ownership of women to me...just doesn't make sense.
@AnnieDiscepoli4 жыл бұрын
Shirts with collars and buttons are more durable then polo shirts. They are made from a cotton weave that is heavier and holds up better. My guess is that they are actually from a uniform company and designed for frequent washing. I believe it really is as simple at that. I live in PA and there are usually a few a few women in the store in similar skits, although a different top as you mentioned. They take a vow of poverty and share with those outside the community, so why waste money on the thin shirts that are sold in the stores today, only to have them wear out after a few washes.

Ownership and control of women? Gosh, wouldn't that be describing society in general? Society controls all of us...you MUST look a certain way, be cool like this, talk like that, act this way, be supportive of this or that...and you have NO choice...sure you can say no I'm not doing that but you WILL be treated negatively as a result, whether that be ignored, left out, eye rolling, talked about, etc. We live our lives from waking to sleeping trying to conform to society!!! This applies to everyone, male or female. Think about it.

I just watched the documentary...it hit home when the guy spoke about his family leaving bruderhof for awhile when he was a teenager...he and other family members eventually went back to community and his comment about sense of belonging sums up everything...isnt that the essence of humanity? Every single person needs that more than anything, belonging. And that is not what our society is based on...it cant be when the focus is on self...you walk up a street or drive through a town and NO ONE is out...they work or school and back inside the home...no mingling with others outside their home, no children playing with others outside their home...we are a selfish society. So we have no sense of belonging and we try to fill that void with anything and everything. Where is the peace in that for anyone?
@williambunter33114 жыл бұрын
Safe Haven; I'm sorry to say that the sense of belonging anywhere, which we crave, is being attacked by the ambitions of the globalists. Even the notion of Nationhood is being scoffed at by politicians and the mainstream media. Thankfully, God has given us His word and we know that those who accept Christ as their Saviour and Lord, will have an eternal home where He is. Those groups who are demanding a lawless world (defunding the police and closing courts of law) and open borders ( i.e. no borders), will get their wish; and their dream will become their nightmare when they live under the totalitarian world system soon to come, headed by the lawless one, the 'beast' ( Rev.13). The apostle Paul tells us who are believers that our citizenship is in heaven. We all want to be loved and to love. We all yearn for that sense of belonging. Only the Lord Jesus can meet our longings. Those that put their faith in Christ will be richly loved and blessed for eternity.

This is all great but I still really don't understand the discrepancy. They make plain tshirts and jeans for women. Why are unisex tshirts and generic boot cut jeans immodest for women?
@kater12724 жыл бұрын
@@Kate-ns1od I think that is reasonable. I enjoy skirts and dresses they just don't suit the diversity of needs I have in my life. It feels incredibly stifling to exclusively wear dresses. It also feels particularly shaming to women to insinuate that they are most modest in yards of fabric. I was know I enjoy being at the river or in nature more easily in jeans. :) It's nice to have freedom of movement and to be feminine too. I also wouldn't call the current standard tops particularly feminine. It's cut very similar to unisex tshirts, which is why I used it as an example. I apologize if i offended at all.

Sometimes my weight fluctuates a bit, but I am very happy in my body. I feel free moving in long skirts. I feel free moving in jeans. Thanks so much Laura and other Bruderhof members who spend so much time and effort sharing not just what you do but the reasons why. I only just discovered you through the BBC documentary on KZbin. Your videos and material I’ve read from Plough have challenged many of the basic assumptions that I make about how life is to be lived - assumptions that I wasn’t even aware of until you challenged them. Even if one is not called to the sort of communal life of the Bruderhof, there is much to be learned and applied from your way of thinking. It seems to me that most of the criticisms people are making stem from the impossibility of understanding your actions through the lens of the common cultural paradigm, as opposed to seeking to understand the paradigm in which your actions make perfect sense.

I just looked at your claymation (?) video. That is so cool! Maybe a dumb question but how familiar are you with the kibbutz movement? The first Bruderhof in Germany was pretty much next door to a place called the Gehringshof which was a farm that was set up to train Jewish farmers who then emigrated to Israel and many of them started communities. The Bruderhof had a lot to do with the kibbutz movement over the years and we still have many friends there. Anyway...

@Laura from the Bruderhof Ah! yup, you can say claymation, though claymations are usually mostly flexible clay so if to be professionally exact you would call it a stop motion film. you saw the one with the little girl and her grandmother that died right? (I have a few up there, but that is really the only full film) I do know of the kibbutz movement. I don't think you can find an Israeli or even a jew who wouldn't :). I lived on a Kibbutz when I was little for a year, while my parents were trying it out. I have many wonderful and also some complex memories of that year. I was only 5. I hadn't heard of that farm in Germany, I'll read about it now. There were many farms back then where euro[ian jews did their training before coming to israel. I was curious if the Bruderhof had a community in Israel, and when googled it, found some kibbutz members telling about their friendships with the Bruderhof members.looks like we might have some mutual curiosities, we can talk more in depth privately on email if you'd like. here is mine: Mizmorw@gmail.com.

It's funny how people focus on clothes so much. I was wearing the same five T-shirts (all the same colour but all a little different) for about 10 years for work and before that as leisurewear. I updated my wardrobe only because I was told T-shirts are not OK at work and because, well, eventually the stains wouldn't come off... but I still wear them at home. The cotton of my25 yo pyjama top has got several holes that are not worth darning as the fabric has got so thin. However, I perceived a clear distinction between the colour choices (more muted for girls and women) and limited styles. There are fun and good quality fabrics so I don't think being frugal is the only point. As for myself, I hated skirts and dresses nearly all my life and still prefer wearing trousers 95% of the time: I see dresses as quite unpractical. I also dislike any forms of division (read discrimination) based on gender. A lot what people explain as "natural" inclination based on gender are little more than society's imposed attitudes. There is nothing unnatural of women working in a metal workshop or men doing the sewing and cooking or childcare: we only believe we like traditional female jobs (and vice versa) because of the bombardment of attitudes, social cues and explicit imposing of values of our society right from birth. I think the lifestyle of people in Bruderhof has many good points, I think communist ideology is a good idea on the paper, but there are also many things in the documentary that are clearly about throwing the baby out with the bathwater. This is fine with consenting adults but not so much when children's education is so wilfully limited as not to serve the individual also outside his or her bubble. Nothing against the individuals.

You don't need to call this lifestyle "poverty". As long as you have everything you need and are content with what you have, there is no need for abundance. Being poor is not having less but wanting more. This lifestyle is actually quite trendy at the moment and called "Minimalism".

@@rainerkeller6392 I can't speak for the Bruderhof but as a former frater myself I can say that what we mean with poverty is the ability to not be attached to anything, you have what you need for what you need and that's pretty much it.
