Someone else did u dirty with this recommendation, Maynard is as good of a singer song writer as anyone, sober live displays Maynards vocal prowess or the grudge where he holds a 28 second growl, then Danny Carey, easily a top 10 drummer showcased in live on pneuma, if your a metal fan, even prog rock they will tie it all together, I've never met a tool fan who likes every single tool track, are liars, bc tool goes to the edge of a ton of different styles but if your a prog rock guy, then it's pneuma live dum cam, think vic firth put it out, showcasing the drums, Maynards live version of sober shows that physical rendition of vocals expressed in his eyes body, spirit, like you can see into his soul...stinkfist is about addiction and how gross it is, not a starter for the tool unitiated....

"Aenema" is beyond amazing. One of my favorite songs ever by anyone. I know it may sound weird but you must see the "Danny Carey Drum Cam" video by Vic Firth sticks. It's a live performance of the wonderful song "Pneuma". You will see why a LOT of people consider him to be one of the best drummers ever. He does things with polyrhythms & weird ever changing time signatures that defy the laws of physics.

I think The Pot is the ultimate Tool starter song. Not too crazy with the time signatures (believe it or not, most of the song is in 4/4 apart from the bridge sections in 3) and nice accessible vocals with wicked bass and simple but effective guitar riffs.

Tool is a band that can be enjoyed purely by its musical esthetics, they are the pre djent groove masters. But it can also be enjoyed through the biting human debate that the lyrics bring. If you get to the level where you get both Tools is a truly great musical expression. Immense talent on all levels. But they are also so infuriatingly eccentric you might drop the whole thing and forget all about them. But they need your time to sink in, its not accessible stuff.

Brother man, look... TOOL has been the soundtrack of my life since 1993. They are phenomenal musicians individually, but together the music, the production, the live shows - it all really is a maelstrom in a bottle. This track has been said to be their most, "accessible," song and I get where such a label would stem from. It's one of only a few songs in standard 4/4 and has a structure that more closely resembles the verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc. format, which their most iconic songs purposefully depart from a traditional structure and all of their songs are some combination of poly-rhythmic, odd and contrasting meters, esoteric and ambivalent lyrics, often jarring or "off putting" electro-synth esque sounds that fade in and around the ever building and progressing soundscape of 4 master musicians that continuously rotate their individual contribution into the "lead" or forefront of the music, just ever tumbling and building and always progressing to the most wonderful and rewarding crescendos ever in music - including the classical symphonic works - and that is EVERY SONG. If you really want a listening experience that is truly sonically rewarding, and contains every single element of what TOOL does best, put into a single song - there is no substitute for the live version of their song, "Pushit," that can be found on their live release titled, "Salival." Again the song is Pushit live from the album Salival (at the time TOOL fans were "salivating" for a new release, so TOOL put together an album of live performances ... salivate + live = Salival) Spiral out. Keep going.

Best done in these steps. 1.) No lyrics or videos.... just listen to the music and catch the vibe. 2.) Listen again with lyrics in front of you to understand what's being said.... do research and learn the messages within the song. 3.) Listen a final time while catching the vibe, and applying recently aquired knowledge. Every Tool song is a masterpiece, sometimes you have to understand it, in order to appreciate it. Subbed for Tool! I see the Army has arrived. You'll love this journey. Keep going. Looking at your other videos and if you want to go full Tool, start with the first album. There are only 5. They are each really cohesive and follow a type of storyline. The production gets better until you end with a Grammy award winning song. Good call about Chevelle but that's the end of that. You'll have a hard time comparing most of their stuff to anyone else. Do some reading about Maynard. It's almost mandatory so you understand. Everyone will have you check out A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. They are more focused on the vocals. In Tool, Maynard is in the background on stage and the instruments are on balance with his voice. Continue the spiral, my friend.

As with all bands................'Different Strokes, for different folks". Many say this is a song that is their best. I am not one of those. Great song yes, but this is one of Tool's most radio friendly songs. the whole 10,000 Days record is a bit more friendly to the masses, but in my opinion Tool was at their best on Laturalus. pick any song of that record, put on your headphones, turn off the lights, close your eyes and get ready for them to take you on a journey. More Tool. I highly recommend the song Laturalus.
@TimKindberg Жыл бұрын
This is Tool doing a straight up ROCK SONG. It's actually, IMO, not typical for them, they are typically even more progressive than this. It's their "radio song" and it's damn good at what it does, but they are just having fun on this song. It would not be fair to listen to this song and go "well THAT'S Tool, ok". I'm not sure where you should go next, but I think something more adventurous so you can see maybe their other sides. Want more emotional journeys: Pushit (Salival Live Version) OR Wings for Marie (Parts 1 & 2) Want more angry badass: Hooker with a Penis OR Aenima Want more pschyadelic: Third Eye OR Lateralus (the song) Want more solid straight-forward hits: Right in Two OR Vicarious OR Schism

Invincible is another track of theirs that does the build-up riff that you're talking about, where it starts off and it already feels heavy, but then you start to realize it's getting fuller and hitting harder than before, building as the song goes on. Just when you think it's done building and couldn't possibly get any heavier... IT DOES. And it's so satisfying.

I never forgot Chevelle, dude! I hadn't really connected Chevelle's early stuff to Tool's style but at around 6:20 I could hear it. A lot of the Tool songs I've heard have felt really dense to me because of the tight, very technical composition (with dizzying time changes and polyrhythms) and the smithing of the lyrics with tons of references, metaphors and, yeah, puns. I'm not a fan of ALL their stuff, but I am of a good chunk of it. I am actually not a particular fan of Keenan as a person (I think he's a raunchy, coarse philosopher and I can respect it but don't love it), but his voice is another matter entirely.
