Wasn't her flaw tho the fact that she works hard too much? Like most of her life is working hard and achieving her dreams to the fullest. Yeah, she still has time and love for family, but in the first few scenes we see of her as an adult is her overworking herself to the point where she doesn't even get enough time to rest. Which is why I think Naveen was perfect for her, because while Tiana helps Naveen work hard and take responsibility more, Naveen helps her take breaks a lot more and over exert herself a lot less And even gets her to have fun a little more than constantly thinking about work I mean, she even realizes that life isn't always about work and achieving her goals, there is more to life than that. Which is why even tho she saw her dream, she wasn't satisfied because she didn't have Naveen in it. She won't be happy just by work and having her dream come true, she also needs love. Which is why she didn't just let Naveen kiss her bestfriend even though that would've already given her her dream job. She learnt that there is more to life than just dream jobs and working hard. That's just my thought tho, which is why I got a bit confused when you called her "too perfect" since she does have flaws, flaws that actually harm her physically and mentally

I think they should have made Tiana feel kind of ill, something minor but noticeable. Like the occasional cough that happens too frequently, or some pain. Because while the show says she works too much, the girl doesn't seem to be negatively affected. She's healthy, has a good relationship with her mom, and so on. Making it obvious that Tiana was killing herself with work would make the entire thing impactful because she wouldn't be able to get her dream restaurant when she's dead.
@marcellacassab4331
@marcellacassab4331 2 жыл бұрын
@@proton8689 Yeah I felt that too. Maybe not ill, but at least show the negative impact of working so hard. Like they imply in the beginning that she's not getting any sleep since she works all night and than works all day. But she sure is wide eyed and bushy tailed and just all around chipper for someone going on zero sleep for god knows how long. I'm trying to keep that in mind for my protags when they're in need, it effects them. My protag pulls an all-nighter and as a result she's got bags under her eyes, she's yawning every five minutes, practically falling asleep while standing up, needs to guzzle two ice caps to get her through the day and she's cranky af. The latter really bites her in the butt. And that's all only after ONE night of sleep deprivation.

@@marcellacassab4331I remember seeing that in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. In episode 4 of the first season, Applejack did not sleep to collect all the apples from the trees. We see her with bags under her eyes, she doesn't hear well, she has balance problems and she ends up seeing double.

This was such a good video! I feel like the problems you listed in this video are ones that come up a lot with poc characters in predominantly white franchises (I had the same issue with Black Panther (RIP Chadwick Boseman)). I appreciate Tiana for what she is which is a great role model for little black girls and boys (and I also love Anika Noni Rose) but I also do feel like Disney creates poc characters just to check boxes off of their diversity list, and once they had given us Tiana they were done ever expanding on her again. I feel this is why we rarely saw her in anything after her debut. If we go down the list of princesses Tiana is literally the most underrepresented out of all of them in terms of spin offs, appearances, and sequels. Heck even Pocahontas had a sequel (which should say a lot given how racist the movie is). I am excited though for the upcoming Tiana series and I hope they can do my girl some justice because I, like many other black people, really do love Tiana but just want to see her have better stories :).

Tiana is actually my favorite Disney princess, being the first one with a character arc. I’m also willing to say overworking herself is more than a short coming. She could not connect with other people. She didn’t have a social life, never considered having her own family, and fundamentally misunderstood her late father. For most of the movie she didn’t so much as look up to him as she pitied him. She was clearly self destructive and I can’t imagine owning a restaurant would reduce her stress or responsibilities. If it weren’t for her realizing the value of herself and those around her, I don’t think she’d ever be satisfied with her life.

Also another note there is certain privilege when the character is white or light skin or biracial with light skin. They usually got much more better writing, character development, more screentime, the writer put attention to these character and fandom hype them up. I aware not all the psyhical description of the character get these treatment however they still have this privilege even though sometime their writing is terrible or they don't get character development at all the fandom still talk about these character. Let's be honest most of the time the character that are well written, interesting, likable usually light skin, white and only a few that are brown and dark skin

Honestly, what I thought was her most recognizable trait was how she did not believe in anything other than hard work. Like all the other princesses kinda wish and sigh at least a little bit, but Tiana was like: you know what? I'm making my own destiny and forget that "wish upon a star" nonsense! Plus the fact she has like zero interest in romance, and is almost against it (not the right time and all).
@jairusjackson7799

I just rewatched the movie today and I'd say Tiana is almost a bit boring but narrowly escapes, because her flaw is that while she understands the importance of family and connections in theory we see she makes no time for any of that in her life. In the scene where her mom tells her about how her dad had love and that was enough to make him happy, she actually brushes her off. The message goes over her head as her mind is too set in achieving this restaurant goal. At the end of the movie when she's tempted by Facilier we see she finally understands the value in her mother's words in that strong human connections can make you happy as oppose to success. Though I will admit, the fact she only meets Facilier in that last scene is a problem. They should've thrown in a scene earlier where the two meet, hell he even was around the corner from her restaurant at one point.

Thanks for another great video. You bring up as lot of really important points about her, and I hope anyone involved in Disney sees this and learns something from it. But as far as my own feelings are concerned she easily stands as one of my personal favourite Disney Princesses. Out of all the official Princess characters, there are very few that I'd consider the most enjoyable parts of their respective movies, and Tiana is definitely one of those few 😊

Man, I'm dissapointed. As someone who loves your channel and your commentary on social issues in movies.... I just disagree with EVERYTHING you've said in this video. I don't know if it's because I feel like you (and many others) bizzarely underrate this movie, which is an absolute masterpiece of cinema in my eyes, but your points about Tiana just being a "black" princess and that she doesn't have flaws??!? chile WAIT a minute. I was pondering about making a video on TPATF and everything that I feel makes it great, and one of my favorite aspects of the entire movie is how Tiana ISN'T perfect. In fact she's the most flawed princess out there, AND the most complex one. Tiana is how do I put it.... a bit of a bitch. For the most part she's a kind-hearted person, as any Disney princess typically is, but she does not know how to treat people that aren't her immediate family. She's distant, snarky, and sometimes straight up rude. You can see this through her shady comments at Naveen, which while partly deserved, sometimes go too far. The whole "you have the makings of a decent mushroom mincer. I just might hire you." "really?" "no." Yes, it's a funny moment, but Naveen was so excited and felt accomplished for the first time in his life, she didn't have to do that. And how could you forget: "Evangeline is nothing but a star. Nothing but light and gas burning up in the atmosphere" (or something like that) She could have crushed Ray's soul for life but she let it slip anyways. Tiana may be a role-model when it comes to hard work, but she never, EVER had people skills because she was always alone on her grind and felt she didn't need anyones company. Tiana is also by FAR the most complex disney heroine and that is a conversation all of it's own. She is only "the black princess" to racists. She is imo one of the most endearing princesses not because she's "perfect" but because she's the only real princess. The only one to be a bitch. The only one to have good and bad sides to her. The only one who worked for everything she had and learned that even she could improve her attitude and her worldview. I'm sorry for coming for you like this, I think you make great content, but this just felt unbelievably short-sighted. There are MANY instances of Tiana having flaws and real ones at that. I think you may need to watch this film again with more of a focus on these character's decicions and the ways they communicate with eachother.

You know what would have helped her? Make the scene she realizes after working her butt off to get that restaurant and the two old white men tell her she lost it and then she is the first one to get involved with Facilier. Ofcourse maybe in another draft they wpuld turn her into a frog as the primal frog..og frog... and Disney got the willies...but still..don't make that scene where she has to choose between Naveen and Facilier's offer as an afterthought round the end. I dont know what would have happened with the whole frog swamp thing but for starters that would have made Tiana into a character we would be involved with slightly more. Also I think while the beginning focussing on her rather than naveen makes his motivation to get involved with Facilier kind of silly aswell the movies fun...but it is cluttered aswell.

Tiana is one of my favorite disney princess i found her to be relatable because she's the only disney princess that come from middle class not royalty beside Mulan of course. For Tiana writing i think the problem is that the writer who write her is not a black woman, also consider the fact the time Tiana is a black woman she will experincing racism so she doesn't get the same privilege as Lottie who is a white woman to express her emotion. You like lottie more than tiana that's ok however the fandom really put Lottie on pedestal that they forgot Tiana is the protagonist. This phenomenon is called being a "mary sue" btw. It was likely done to make the character as inoffensive as possible, lest they suffer backlash for it. In so doing the symptom of having the plot happen "to" her instead of coming "from" her is an inevitability. To their credit, she does get to react to the situations that unfold before her and make some progress through the story on her own, but being turned into a frog definitely limits her agency (Which is kinda the point of such a curse).

I like this analysis on The Princess and the Frog. As a kid, The Princess and the Frog was my first movie I saw in theaters, for my 5th birthday, so this movie has a place in my heart. I love Tiana as a character, but I think if Disney showed more screen time of her in human form, gave her more conflicts with Dr Facilier, or even some internal conflicts, that she would be remembered more as the only black disney princess. It's a shame that they most likely included her just for diversity and not for her role model character WHILE being african american. They did her dirty.

Tiana didn't get much recognision due to historical inaccuracies of the film she was in. Disney feared to show racism in that era. Let's say it clear - history matters. Still I am kinda surprised there would be people who belive all Disney films are accurate depiction of history when there were cases of Disney films telling lies to us like Pocachontas and that documentary about lemmings allegedly commiting suicide (they forced them).

for me Tiana's thing was she had great intentions and a fine work ethic, however it needs ajusting a bit. Naveen's thing was being kind spirited yet at the same time he needs adjustment. It's like this one guy said " she's like timmy turner or ash catchem we are meant to be in there shoes" For me that's sort of the case with Tia. I mean sure she might be the token character but she still shines. I have one thing to say about what you said about "when she becomes a frog she get shifted to the side lines" Thats the point. She never learned or prepared for being a frog. Her main skill is cooking, which low and behold her best scene in the bayou is her cooking

I don't really agree with you. You claim that the problem with her character is that her only trait is a "black role model" but that seems to be the only thing that interests you about her. I don't buy this "ethnic diversity" thing (I should probably use this card because otherwise you won't take the opinion of seriously- I am Jewish) I want good characters, I don't care what race, I don't care if the hull film is full of whites, blacks, Or any ether the race or cultures that exist in the world. Obviously I don't want racist things in movies, but I don't count how much melanin there is in a movie, and it really doesn't affect my judgment of it. I understand the critique of Tiana's "perfectness" , but she's so perfect because she's a Disney princess, and also black, so an internet herd follows their every move to look for something to be offended about. "Whitewash" and "making POC's animals" (POC is generally a rebranding of the racist term "colored people" because some people can not shut up about race) these are problems of people who just can not get enough melanin no matter what they are looking for stuff to be offended about. Tiana could be a better character if people stopped referring to her as the "the black one" but as a character. I have no problem, celebrate the special culture of this character, just please don't make it what matters about her.
