Wanted to add something I've not seen repeated elsewhere. In the Japanese-american youtuber Dashblue's video (found here: /watch?v=rxydfYaAwjw ) his wife who is fully Japanese points something out (actually a whole slew of things the woman has eagle eyes, maxed out perception): They are giving Yaskue both clothes and a sword riddled with Nobunaga's family crest. The issue? You have to ask for permission to use that, as that family IS STILL AROUND TO THIS VERY DAY. 100% chance they just went and added it thinking its fine because historical revisionism is fun. Oh they also added the crests to banners in the game but then fucked up the format so its stretched out and cut off on the banners. This is a legit insult and would've had a banner maker killed for his insolence back in those days. So not only have they just most likely not asked for permission, their lazy approach to things where they cut corners have brought a great insult to the Nobunaga family. Not that they care of course, gotta shove the Message (tm) everywhere.

@@sungrandstudios I forgot to add, in that same video Yaskue is praying at a Buddhist shrine. This Buddhist shrine is infamous for NOT being allowed to be depicted elsewhere, they NEVER give permission. Ubisoft did it anyways, most likely just went "COOL SHRINE" and didn't even bother to check.

They actively hurt the people they are claiming to help and turn everyone against them. Because of the way stocks work, everything surrounding getting investors is making it seem like your stock is worth investing into. It's a series of bubbles, ones that they hope never pop. After you actually do some research and see what horrendous stuff these families are covering up, you will understand why they are willing to try to rewrite history and current affairs. You know what? I might be less pissed off if they just say that. It's so ridiculous to see they advertise their game as historical accurate / diversity / inclusion while doing all of this. The vast majority of the time if you're cool, the people around you will be cool. When gaming started to really become more mainstream in the 00s I saw a rise of things like women's gaming spaces, and I never felt the need to join. If I'm playing a game then I'm just a gamer, not a female gamer. I don't need to tie that part of my identity to my hobbies. I never felt the need to put all these labels on myself. The game itself comes at the height of anti-Asian hate crimes in the West, with the largest percentage of attacks coming from the very demographic their Yasuke represents. You also say the height of asian hate crimes in the west. Dude in 2020 asian hate crimes made up not even like 15% of hate crimes. It was the least likely hate crime to happen, and it skyrocketed during covid thanks to a fucking president saying "Chinese virus" and then you have chinese people who open businesses in black ghettos out the wazoo. Asian hate crimes have sense then basically went back into nothingness. Literally go on the damn FBI's website and look for yourself. It was an issue blown way out of proportion, especially since SHIT MORE HATE CRIMES HAPPEN TO WHITE PEOPLE THAN ASIANS. Thats why nobody is screaming stop asian hate anymore because the issue basically disappeared since your god trump conservative left office and people stopped blaming COVID on asia.

@@Percopius In fact, there are no black people in Japanese history. Bowing is only for officials. So it is actually an insult to the Japanese. Just like in Chinese history, although different ethnic groups require each other to kneel, they are all yellow people, whether they are Han or Manchu. The only thing that does not appear here is a black person. In Chinese history, white people are heretics. It is similar in Japan, so they will not bow to black people at all.

It's like Denethor in LotR. He went so insane with hatred and fear of everything going on outside, that he lit himself on fire and threw himself off the top of the keep. Even though the battle was ending and his side had already won. These people are driving themselves absolutely nuts trying to create a world that already exists. The biggest problem with this game is not that it is historically inaccurate (as many AC defenders use the "it was never accurate" argument). The real problem is that Ubisoft is actively and a blatantly DISRESPECTING an entire country which in this case is Japan. The Samurai character should've been another more well known Japanese historical figure. Yasuke would be great as an NPC that you help out rather than pick him as a center and placed ABOVE ALL JAPAN as the Samurai character in the Creed.

Nah I think its because its historically inaccurate while claiming it is and then doubling down on it. They could lean more towards the fantastical bullshit they do for their DLCs with mythological figures and no one would call foul. I'll be even more flexible here. What if they had 3 lifepaths like in Cyberpunk 2077? (95% of the game plays the same, 5% differences in some dialogs/quests - intro explains how 3 varied starts converge to the same Act1) One should be a Japanese man, one Yasuke, the other idk like a Spaniard named Inigo (2in1 Hispanic and European representation! Someone pay me 6 figures to do DEI pls). Then I'd personally be voicing zero complaints about Yasuke or Inigo because they're just options and the Asian MC choice isn't displaced for the sake of somebody else.

Yasuke COULD work in an assassin’s creed game if he was a supportive character much like Leonardo Di Caprio, being the retainer of the shogun could be indeed a very valuable position to have as a spy or as an informant. The problem here is that the execution of his game character is disrespectful both for him and Japanese history/culture as a whole.

The hate fir Thomas Lockley is overblown. It is highly unlikely that he was deeply involved or regularly consulted during the game's creation. At best they would have made promotional material months ago where they ask him questions they know he would give an answer they want to. It's fine if you wish to join the discussion about Yasuke on the side of him not being a Samurai but don't pile on this one historian instead of placing blame where it should be on Ubisoft.

@@Japaneseanimeguy nonsense, Thomas Lockley isn't a Historian, he was an English Lecturer (a dime a dozen job in Japan) and his work contains numerous historical inaccuracies basically blaming Japan for slavery, which legitimately makes no sense and that it's proven beyond doubt that he had no sources for any of this, he just made it up. Thomas Lockley released two versions of his book, one for the local Japanese audience that had most (not all) of the absurd claims removed and one for the International audience that was filled with these absurd claims, which shows he knows he was making it all up and didn't want to get called out in Japan for it, making it appear more as a work of fiction unlike the International release. Also there is evidence linking Thomas Lockley to likely having been a consultant that Ubisoft did in fact use for making this game. Ultimately the game is based off of Thomas Lockley's work and work he published in the International release of his book as if it were factual when it was all fiction. He could have avoided this to begin with by not making an obvious hate piece in the first place.

Makes too much sense if you look at the list of screw-ups that Ubisoft did. At a former Japanese gaming expo f.e. they showed "Yasukes sword" but instead of a replica of the videgames sword design they had a cheap replica from One-Piece. That thing doesn't look even close to the sword featured in the game 😂 Then an artist was complaining that Ubisoft used some of his designs in the official artbook without asking. The pinned comment in this section is also quite interesting in this regard. In some areas of the game you can find Chinese architecture and now they presented the half of a gate without even wondering why there's only one half of it. I guess if those people would make AC Brotherhood today the people of Rome would all live in ruins 🤷‍♂️ Still, if any of these screw-ups would have happened alone I would consider them as minor mistakes that can happen but the amount of minor mistakes during the promotion phase makes me wonder what else they got wrong in the final game.

Funny you mention they used wikipedia because the "historian" they relied on took a few paragraphs written about Yasuke and wrote an entire book on him by "filling in the blanks" and basically just guessing a lot of things. I’m a westerner, and learned a lot from this video, thank you making this I remember how excited I was seeing the announcement for the game, because I’m a long time AC fan, but my faith in Ubisoft as a developer had been nonexistent for a while now. (like, probably since Odyssey was announced) Like, I was excited that they were finally doing it, but was worried that they wouldn’t be careful enough, as I know Japanese culture and customs should NEVER be disrespected, misinterpreted, misrepresented, as they are very, VERY important to Japan. (As the same should be with any culture in the world that a developer/author/filmmaker/artist/etc is choosing to depict that isn’t their own) I really want this game, as I remember wanting to see an AC set in Japan for so long. I know Ubisoft is bad, I know they’re horrible, and although I want this game… I feel like if I do get it, I’m gonna be a horrible person for even considering it after watching this. (Which I doubt was the initial intention of this video) Like it’s a game I’ve been wishing for so long, but at the same time I know Ubisoft made a ton of mistakes, and getting the game will just likely just support them as they have a lot of bad habits as people, but I don’t want that on my conscious, so I’m stuck in this limbo state of “should I get it and play the game I’ve been wanting to play for so long?” or “I should try and resist the temptation of this one thing I’ve waited so long for?” Thank you for making this video, it’s given me a lot to think about, and I deeply apologize if any of this possibly offends anyone, as it was never my intent. (which won’t excuse it if it did, which again I apologize in advance)
