Oklahoman student here. The legislature is trying to wait us out. We've been out since last Monday, and the OEA's demands have been made clear- Congress needs to pass a capital gains tax and Fallin needed to veto a repeal on the hotel tax. She didn't. Now we're gridlocked- the govt isn't listening anymore. I miss school, but my teachers and the future of our schools deserve better. We can't give in now.

I have a few friends that are attorneys that joined the teachers at the capitol on Monday. (Side note: if you haven’t seen a video of that, please look one up. It’s amazing.) They agreed that the representatives that are refusing to even hear any bills that would increase funding for education are just waiting until the Wednesday, the first day to file to run in the upcoming elections, to see if they are going to be unopposed or not. Hopefully by tomorrow afternoon they will all change their tunes. I know of many, many people, mainly teachers, who are going to run against them. Also, I was a student in Oklahoma, I have 2 kids attending school here, and I have several friends that are teachers and I’ve never seen or heard of creationism being taught in a public school. I’m sure the private religious schools around here teach it, but that’s about it.

What it's like being a teacher: - work from 7:00 AM till midnight (gotta correct homework and do prep AFTER class.) - blow 50% of your salary on supplies for the classroom. - work all day Saturday, either doing prep/correcting homework OR doing chaperoning for some school function. - blow another 40% of your salary on mandatory "workshops" so you can "upgrade" your skills (but, really, you're attending these only because the admin made some shady deal with a testing company and if you don't attend, ha-ha, you're fired.) Oh, and these workshops will be done during the summer so, no, you DON'T get the summer off, even though misinformed dumbfucks insist you do. - wake up at age 50 or thereabouts and realize you're spent 1/4 of your life slaving away in education and all you've got to show for it is ill health (no time to exercise since you're always at school), zero social life, MAYBE a couple grand in your IRA (thanks to all that school supply-buying), and--as Jeffries said--it pretty much looks like you WILL be living alone in the back seat of a Yaris or in a dingy rented room somewhere if you retire. So, yeah, it's no-fucking-wonder that nobody wants to be a teacher anymore. Striking teachers in Oklahoma? Hell, let's not stop there--I'm all for a NATIONAL teachers' strike. Maybe that would wake up the dim-bulb GOP wankers who KEEP CUTTING EDUCATION BUDGETS EVERY ELECTION TERM. If you want better-educated students, you're gonna have to give teachers something to work with other than ratty, 30 year-old textbooks.

That's the point. People are getting different jobs, because the payment sucks, which leads to a shortage of teachers. How people seem to think teachers don't matter, that education doesn't matter is beyond me. The need and demand of teachers is a lot fucking greater than of aeronautical engineering or cashiers at McDolands. Furthermore, it's freaking education! A society, freaking democracy is dependent on having educated citizens and voters. Schools shouldn't be ruled by the market and by economic incentives.

If you're a dumb-shit homework won't fucking help, and if your lucky enough to have parents that teach you how to read sitting in class is pretty much enough as long as part of class is dedicated to exercises of the daily studies. I never did homework, ever. If i hadn't gotten A's and B's on test i would have flunked and not from a lack of knowledge. Shit, my 6th grade report card was 2 F's 3 D's and a C. I aced the placement test because I actually kind of listened in class, in fact they wanted me to skip 7th grade. Seriously homework is fucking stupid!

Republican logic: let's cut the taxes of corporate CEOs and give them higher bonuses, that will incentivize attracting talent. Let's threaten to cut the salaries and benefits of teachers to incentivize getting talent in schools... WTF? You know why so many European and Asian nations do better in education? Because they incentivize attracting talent by respecting teachers and giving them the necessary benefits for a comfortable (not necessarily rich) life. You know why Japan is doing so well in education compared to the US for example? Because they respect, support, and honor their teachers! A lot better incentive than the 'oh he became a teacher because he wasn't good at doing anything so fuck him!' attitude in the US.

Almost no one thinks of giving money to schools. In a democracy schools are not represented. Students don’t have the right to vote, teachers are a minority, most of the parents have bigger problems like feeding the family, rent or mortgage and once you hit 50 you only vote for retirement. Europe is not an exception.

How tax cuts for the rich led to the Oklahoma teachers strike 1) Oklahoma has been cutting the top tax rate for more than a decade 2) These tax cuts hit education the hardest These tax cuts, which were passed in 2004, ultimately caused Oklahoma to lose about $1.022 billion in annual revenue. 3) Who benefited most from the tax cuts? The wealthy. 4) Falling teacher compensation is a larger national trend

That's the funny thing about win the vast minority pays the overwhelming majority of your taxes. So a little bit less of their money is way better than none of their money, because they moved out of the state. Maybe focus on budgets that are actually capable of educating people with the money available rather than continuing these sweetheart deals with these companies that the government giving out.

I believe most teachers really want more district funding for their schools as to support them in teaching. Not just for materials like markers and books, but improve aesthetics, arts program to stimulate interest and diversity, field trips to build culture and experience in kids. To say they just want a pay raise is short sided. Besides, there are a few teachers in the public school program who don't deserve raised, looking at high School teachers who stopped caring about the regular courses. The reason why public education will never get better in this country is because the future leaders (a.k.a. the children of the people in power now) already have plenty of opportunities and enough of a trust fund that it doesn't even require them to know anything. Our current president is a perfect example of it. Sure he went to Wharton where, apparently, they teach you to bankrupt casino operations and how to fail upward.

A system that has no strong incentives to improve is not going to improve. The government sometimes does good work (ex: military communication R&D leading to ARPANET initiated by the Cold War which ultimately lead to the innovation of the internet), but that's often in the context of a war. The country is going to get wiped out if they don't innovate and improve efficiency so war is one of the few forces that provides the government incentives to innovate and improve. Outside of wars, government-run programs tend to stagnate. They're going to be receiving tax dollars after all even if they provide the shittiest service. And they're not going to receive any bonuses if they do a better job. Why would we expect things to improve and improve under those circumstances? It's like do we expect DMVs to become super efficient while using the latest state-of-the-art technology with the most wonderful customer service? If not, why would we expect public schools to do that? I'm still amazed that people seem to think that government-subsidized programs are going to be anything but backwards, poorly managed, inefficient and costly, out-of-date, and filled with disgruntled employees. That's what we're supposed to expect, and that's what people should expect independent of the expenditures. Even NASA is starting to look archaic and inefficient when compared to SpaceX, and NASA has had an epic starting home advantage.

Hell any job that requires you to interact with people needs to be a higher starting wage. Especially if you are blessed with seeing the same people each and every day.

They still never got full funding, even asked for it to paid by a cigarette tax, which is in decline since the 90's. Not exactly the most forward thinking teachers. Hell the teachers caved while the actual union was still fighting. If they cant think long term they shouldnt be teachers. As a Oklahoma parent, they really didn't do anything to help the kids. The classes are behind those of Texas and they dont do special needs or advanced classes. They didn't really fight for the children here. Even still voted for the party that screwed them to begin with. Cant stand the teachers here, but cant afford private school.
