8:35 In computer graphics, we call that subsurface scattering. It's an incredibly hard effect to get right, and is usually the tiniest little detail from making a CGI human appear photorealistic. Next time you see an uncanny-valley-looking human, check for this effect: It's super hard to notice when it's not there, but our brains pick up on it subconsciously, and the humans end up looking like plastic to us. You can clearly notice this between Toy Story 2 and 3. Obviously, there are so many rendering technique differences between those movies, but individually identifying them is very difficult. This is one of the largest deal breakers. So happy to see it in a video game. I've never seen it before.

Red Dead Redemption 2, the newer Assassin's Creed games, Spiderman (I believe?), Ghost of Tsushima, even GTA 5 has it to some degree but it's much less convincing in that... @Onaterdem8 ай бұрын
@@samixalam_ Yep, since last year I've been informed that many other games have used the effect, and with a simple texture trick nonetheless, so it's not _that_ difficult to do (but still difficult to do _right)._ That's my bad. HFW is still one of the best looking examples though.

One thing about this game is they didn't have to add any of these little details, could've just added new features, gameplay mechanics, etc, and it could've been a good game, but, like in the first game, they went above and beyond to add these little details that make the world we're playing in feel so much more realistic, definitely a huge goty contender for me, I love everything about this game. 😃
@hansalanson34972 жыл бұрын
Having more gameplay features doesn't automatically makes it a better game, a lot of games have scrapped and unimplemented stuffs buried in their data and these things could get there because the devs think it doesn't fit with the overall design of the game or they can't implement it right with the budget and tech they have at hand. For example, these guys are more than likely capable of making Strombirds and Dreadwings mountable, but that would easily kill the entire point of developing and diversifying Aloy's combat options because players can just easily bombard the entire map. They will have to balance that out again somehow and develop a new measures to counter the obvious advantage and who knows how much brainstorming that would take to find a satisfying solution, and the amount of head scratching to get it right... Ideas for a implementable macro feature are not 1:1 transactional values with micro details. They probably set with the scope first and beautify it later, it's not like HFW didn't improve anything from HZD as it's WAY more packed and better designed in many department.

“A lot of these were in the first game already”, yes but here things are greatly expanded. Tons more differing settlements to show off dynamic NPC’s working and chatting, the detail in the Utaru settlement is amazing with all the wickerwork and grown in moss, people farming and singing or sitting at ponds. Chainscrape itself has the coolest activity going on with multiple levels of detail on how the logs get to the saw-blade, with multiple NPC’s down the river using sticks to push them in the right direction, to where they finally get offloaded to a pile of cut logs by the end. Mounts have been diversified giving more unique mounting animations, as well as more combat options. And just the sheer graphical fidelity upgrades other already existing animations and details. It’s fine for existing details to already be in the first game, if they were absent here it would be pretty odd.

Two more things, my friend told me that if you fly too high, eventually Aloy will comment that its getting a little hard to breathe. I also found some of the Utaru playing Frizbee in Plainsong. I certainly learned a few new things from this video! Such insane detail! But so incredibly wonderful!

😊 Don't forget that the following features was already implemented in Horizon Zero Dawn: • on-machine Cauldron marks (even on Corruptors and Deathbringers which has no Cauldron, and the marks on them is the logo of Thebes in Horizon Forbidden West!) • Shell-walker cargo fixing • catching breath after run • shaking one hand when climbing • various mounting animations • idle reaction to weather • moving up and down on steep surfaces • damaged machine limps But these were developed around 2015. And these features are still years ahead many other developer companies. E.g. the 15-year old rudimentary character animation in the recently released Elden Ring. It's so irritating for my eyes that I can't get that game seriously, it ruined the show for me.
@nathendrake39272 жыл бұрын
I somewhat disagree with your various mounting animations point. Striders, broadheads, and chargers are all mounted with the same animation, and I don’t think mounting from different directions changes the animation (besides possibly from behind. Incredible. The gaming industry has come a long way and its still growing. All these years and developers have accumulated a stockpile of data on how to make games and archives of tools and objects they can easily pick from to make things faster. Couple that with advancement in automated technology that simplifies the creation process. All this has allowed developers to focus all their budget on story telling, game mechanics and gameplay without technology bottlenecking their process.

I can spend hours just watching what NPCs are doing, especially kids. Utaru kids playing with Tallneck toys. Tenakth kids running up to a soldier (daddy?) to get a head pat. Makes my heart melt.

--Here's a detail I just found: you can knock snow off some of the small shrubs in snowy areas. I noticed it by mistake and then spent 5 minutes running through brush watching the snow come off. It's truly amazing. --There's a black box inside a settlement, and the NPC merchant nearby will say something like "I'm not giving you a discount for that!" when opening the vent behind him. --Using a glider in a settlement also prompts some amusing reaction dialogue from NPCs.

I love the attention to detail in these games. I remember playing ZD and getting really excited, because she runs differently through deep snow than on regular ground. You never see this stuff in games.

Great vid but just a slight nitpick, for no. 9 it's not that there is less air resistance near the ground, it's actually the air closet to the ground is less turbulent as compared to the air high up in the sky

Damn, the hairs on the face and neck is insane. Such a useless detail in a game, but the dev did it anyway. Such a show of love and realism

The wet weather effect isn't working anymore after 1.05 patch, when u get in the water and come out your equipment and Aloy remain dry, same for when it's raining :(
@ivanvukadin31942 жыл бұрын
It's a known bug and they planed to fix it with 1.07 or 1.08
@dusssky2 жыл бұрын
Hope fully they fix the water effect in aloy because she doesn't seem to get wet after the intro stage. Even when it rains other npc have droplets on their body or they do get wet but aloy stays dry

I like that if you pass through a settlement jumping or running NPCs will react, I heard phrases like "what's with the acrobatics?" or "no running, be respectful", I really like that.

Another tiny thing I've noticed is while flying on a sunwing or waterwing, an owl or a pelican would come close to fly along. It's just cute.

my personal favourite was something else, when flying close above the water and making a turn, the sun/waterwing's wing is actually hitting the water surface and not just glitcing through. It will show a waterspash with sound. Such a small detail, but it makes the whole experience more "realistic"
@fancymilk3712 жыл бұрын
The only issue I find is water animation and physics and that could be better but nonetheless it's truly a masterpiece and sets a benchmark for a next gen game.

These are just some of the few minor details on why I love games that have so much dedication in them, it's what make the world in the game so lively and realistic, no wonder why in games detailed as these there's still going to be something discovered in years
