Over a year later, and I'm still impressed every time I throw my Epixor30. I too ordered after Tackle Advisors video, use it often, and can't believe how smooth the retrieve and drag are, cast a country mile, and lays line flat and even. Alot of reel for the money.

Very useful! The only thing I would add, as a positive for the reel, is the line clip. I much prefer that style if line clip to the little plastic ones on the Daiwa and Shimano reels in that price range. In bait fishing I will often fish at a specific distance to keep my bait going into the same spots, and so will cast with the line clipped in. I’ve both broken the plastic clips when fishing the method, and damaged lighter line with the plastic clips. Great review!

Good point. Nobody knows everything. I am guilty of not using the line clips where i'm supposed to and as result never think about them..

You can 100% use braid on the Okuma Epixor or any slow Oscillation reel.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 4 жыл бұрын
and I do. But this is the logic and marketing of manufacturers. In all honesty you have to know what you are doing or mishaps can happen - they happened even to me. If you catch a big fish on a tight drag (horsing it out because of snags), the very next cast should be without bait, just to reel the line again. After a strong pull the braid does dig inside the coils that are already on the spool, and if u try to cast immediately after that the line will hit the brakes hard when it reaches where the braid has dug in. But I am aware of that and avoid it and still prefer the beautiful line lay of slow oscillation long spool reels
@themontaukmonster1
@themontaukmonster1 4 жыл бұрын
i_fish Are you fishing freshwater with light line? I use braid 20lb or heavier. Today’s “slow oscillation” can handle heavier braid. The old Version of the slow oscillation was way too slow and I would develop digging on the spool. I’ve been using the Penn conflict LC, Epixor, and Tatula all which can handle 20,30, and 40lb braid for me.
@themontaukmonster1

The old oscillation would lay it on perfectly but on the newer reels it’s slight humped in the middle

I have the 20 size of this I love it, I use it for spinning in the sea, I get a magic cast only problem I have had with it is the spool is very small and you don't get a spare but so you have to carry spare line with you if you catch the bottom and lose some tackle but that's the the only problem it's a good feel for a light spinning rod I have caught some big sea bass and sea trout with this reel.

compared with a nasci for smoothness? was really thinking of picking one up but want 4000 size.. =/ you're also very correct about the nasci clicker, constant issues with it not working. have to keep cleaning and oil every few uses, sometimes its so quiet almost hard to hear while out on a kayak.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 5 жыл бұрын
No Okuma at any price is as smooth as the Nasci. Even the $800 Makaira is not as smooth. Okuma cannot cut gears as precise as shimano. It is not about money, they cannot do it. I still think this Okuma is better value than the Nasci, just because it is dirt cheap and is very reliable. BUT, you are asking for smoothness of the gears, and this is the only area where it lacks to the shimanos. DO NOT OIL CLICKERS. Do not OIL or GREASE them. That makes them QUIET, and they do not work well, and can come off the spring if they are lubed. If you greased the clicker, you caused it to malfunction.

I got the Alaris 50 and its smaller and lighter than a shimano sienna 4000, but the spool is "deeper", so it has more line capacity than a regular 4000 size. 170 mts of 0.35mm mono.

Man I love the longer videos. I like a good thorough review. The reel has a nice ring to it and the look is nice too with the darker colors. I appreciate the explanation on slow oscillating reels. I've never noticed or thought about it but it makes a lot of sense. I use the Sahara myself. Was going for the Nasci but fell in love with the Sahara and have no regrets buying it. Perfect for crappie. Another awesome review and thanks for working on Thanksgiving!!

Solid, smooth and I love it..but as you say watch the sizings,I bought the 20 and it is a 1000 size reel,I've kept it and will use it for creek fishing ,but have now ordered a 40 which will more suit what I originally bought it for With the black Friday sale they are going out dirt cheap at the moment,I have a feeling the next model is just around the corner. I took TA's advise and bought one on Amazon for $35.11 delivered to my door. Sale not around today and took 3 long weeks to ship to me. BUT my XT30 Okuma Holds 330 yards of 15 lb Braid (holy shit batman) plus it is BETTER or as good as all my Daiwa LT's or Shimano's. For me to get a better reel I need to spend about 150 Daiwa and about 200 Shimano. I have owned Van Staal, Penn, Cabo's, etc. as well. My buddy has one with 200 days on his xt30. fingers crossed for 6-8 years of great service. I had a chance to buy 2-3 Okuma reels on a guide plan about 10 years ago paid $40 each for them I think they retailed for 150ish. I had Stradics at the time as go to reels. The Okuma & Stradics both had the same smoothness reliability & drag but casting the Shimano was better by 95 for the Stradic and a 90 for the Okuma. I am sorry you got one with a lot of slop hope your luck changes.

for $35... hard to beat.. nobody offers anything decent for that price. It has many advantages over my Legalis LT, it is sealed, it has a stronger frame, and has amazing drag sound. The only area where it falls short to LT reels is the smoothness of the gears. Okuma cannot cut the gears with same precision as Daiwa and Shimano right now (and nobody else can), but if you talk about value at certain price point - it is a pretty safe bet.

Okuma Epixor is the only reel on the list that is capable of saltwater fishing. The other reels have no seals. Abu Garcia spinning reels are absolutely no good. Their baitcasting reels are pretty good. The reel i personally recommend for saltwater fishing is Shimano Nasci. Very strong, very light, and much much smoother than Epixor. Hey! I just want help with a topic regarding the handles on Okuma reels. After a couple of months of heavy pikefishing they start to have a lot of free play and feels broken (which when looking closer they usually are). I have noticed that the plastic gears that attaches the handle into the gears inside the reel brake. Its like you punch a person in the mouth and teeth fall out but in this case its plastic gears. The shimano Nasci has got metallic gears and hopefully wont have this problem? But do you guys have the same experience with okuma reels? And how do you fix it? Anybody know if Okuma has better handles to buy? I have tried to contact Okuma on three different continents but they dont even reply 😩 Thank you for your videos! Damn your thorough! My #1 reel for that is Shimano Sahara 4000. If you like the Nasci, watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHS1qXubiMmKp80&lc=UgyFJhvQrKPyNSL8keV4AaABAg You are wasting your money on Nasci, because Nasci and Sahara is exact same reel, with same part numbers if u need replacements for bearings or gears or anything else. The only difference is that the nasci is sealed so it can be used in saltwater. But you fish in freshwater, so spending money on Nasci is a waste. The Ultegra is also a sahara, with even more bells and whistles, but the core is the same. Sahara is the king of value in med heavy fishing. Daiwa does not have a good reel in that price range right now. The LT reels are no good for heavy fishing because the frame is thin and flexy. The BG 3000 would be good for that (4000 is HUGE) but it is more expensive than the sahara, even though overall stronger than the sahara, with metal body and more bearings. Daiwa Eliminator is the same reel as Daiwa BG, with a couple of unimportant bearings removed and a hexa handle instead of screw in handle. Eliminator 3000 would be good if u find it around the Sahara price. The other brands at the moment cannot cut the gears with the same precision as daiwa and shimano and I don't buy them because i like the smoothness of Daiwa and SHimano. Of all the reels that I know in the $60-$70 range, shimano Sahara is both the highest quality and at the same time the best value for the money, which is extremely rare.

I know what you are referring to. Daiwa calls those spools ABS spool. They have larger diameter for better casting distance. But now all daiwa reels have ABS spools. If you take daiwa Exceler (generation 1 ) , it had ABS spool. The next generation Exceler LT does not have ABS spool, so the spool diameter is almost identical to shimano. Look in the description of the reel whether it has ABS spool to tell if they have oversized spool.

maybe if u draw the schematic on the white board - that hasnt changed. But the precision of cutting the gears is a long way from where it was even 10 years ago. Compare an old reel to your new Sahara! Night and day. Also new materials allow manufacturers to reduce weight and increase durability simultaneously. All old gears were made pot metal. Today we have stuff like cold forged aluminum. I am surprised the design hasnt changed though...very stable..

@@jeromegagnon3787 For freshwater I personally prefer the Legalis despite being cheaper because it has less resistance when u turn the handle. But for saltwater - yes - the Exceler will last longer and I would go with exceler. Canada sux. To be honest, the reel that you need is Shimano Nasci 4000. It is perfectly sealed all around and butter smooth and will do everything u want perfectly. If you can jump to the Nasci, you won't regret it. Everything else will suffer from the salt. The Okumas do NOT feel as good in the hand, if they are cheap, go for them, but I would rather get Fuego or Nasci. Saltwater makes everything complcated. You pay $100 for a $60 reel, and $40 goes into seals. Watch my Sahara vs Nasci video before u make you choice. You will see why I recommend the Nasci.

@@ifishcatfish i considered the shimanos, but can't say i like em much, heavier, and the ones i already have all tend to get loose in one season..think ill go with the exceler for my light rod. the screw in handle seem to be the only difference with the legalis. might consider the fuego if i can find a 3k somewhere around 120cad, is it just the magseal on the spool bearing that is added from the exceler to make the fuego ?

i m the only one who both a shimano sahara 4000 and after 1 month my reel starts to bite inside? Like i changed the grees to see if it because of that i even try to play with the shins but still biting and i have a legalis 4000 too and its still the same after 1 month. Maybe i get a bad product! And about the freeplay of the of the legalis its not that bad if u useit on a nidlefish or even a 6kg bluefish but do not use for higher aplications.

Maybe bad anti reverse bearing. Never heard that happen on a sahara. Mine are 3 years old and i use them for carp fishing and are still smooth as day one

@@ifishcatfish Actualy the anti reverse bearing its fine but few minuts later i sandpaper some parts from the reel and its not biting now All i need to do its to clean the residues from the sanding and to grees all and i hope to work perfectly. And the last thing was that the main gear its bigger with few milimetres then what the origina size is. Over all maybe i get an error when i buy it

it is reasonably sealed. I would say yes, but you still have to take care of it. Don't expect that u can submerge it or throw it in the sand or stuff like that. But yes, it is sealed and i would say would be alright for salt

Not Sedona. Sedona is missing a bearing on the pinion gear. Sahara is the one you want. But costs twice as much as this. This is fine too, but not as smooth as Sahara

I guess "weak" was a little harsh but your idea of the BG series changes when you knock each real back a size where it belongs. I wouldn't give credit to a heavyweight boxer for beating up middleweights.
@ifishcatfish
@ifishcatfish 5 жыл бұрын
No, it wasnt harsh , and i wouldnt care if it was. Its just not true. Daiwa puts oversize spools to improve line management and casting distance. Bigger spools will always outcast smaller spools because the line is not as curly. Big drag is not important anyway. Nobody uses more than 10 pounds. Smooth drag is what everyone wants.

I disagree with Daiwa LT having no flex. In fact the Exceler, Fuego and Freams have A LOT MORE FLEX than this Okuma. In Australia we catch fish a lot bigger than that shitty carp-of-a-looking thing you've got in your profile pic. Your opinion isn't generated from a person that has had a lot of fishing experience nor handled many reels. I've got everything from the low to high end Daiwa and Shimano reels.
