The other reason the fuel tank didn't go boom was it was a diesel fuel tank... it's vapor pressure is way higher than that of gasoline. Unless you get a diesel tank super hot, I personally would even blink at it.

That's called a primary fuel screen, almost all early Caterpillar fuel systems had one.

my friend has a really old 87?western star dump truck 3 axle i think one axle was added on.its cool cause its a long nose roof cap has surface rust couple pin holes starting.anyways it was made one year pretty rare i gueuss.he took it off road cause dot was hassling him been sitting awhile but it still runs.it looks like a pete has chrome horns on top pretyy cool old truck.its a 13 speed.i think its life started as a day cab small window in back which tells me it never had a sleeper.

Was surprised to hear you playing oldies. Thought you are too young to like then. I'm 74 and thought anyone more than 10 years younger doesn't like them. I think I would've cleaned up the tank a little before putting it back on. Maybe sanded the corrosion from the bands off and sprayed carb cleaner on the oily spots. Of course, I don't have the ambition you have.

I always weld a washer to the bolt first. Then A nut to the washer. I find the washer welds to the broken bolt better

Regarding the return to tank fuel line configured with a "dip tube"...........the main intention of that is to have the warmed returning fuel re-enter the tank near the fuel pick up tube. Usually both the pick up and the return tubes are inside a baffled sort of enclosure called the "hot box". This helps prevent fuel gelling in the suction lines and primary filter (and waxing of the primary filter media) during cold weather. It does not guarantee gelling and waxing won't occur, but it lessens the chances.

recently I've started welding flat washers to snapped bolts to get a lot more heat and metal into the bolt, from there i weld a nut onto the washer which gives a bunch of extra surface area to weld to. great results so far

You didnt memtion that diesel and gasoline are VERY VERY different. Diesel doesn't just constantly offgas flamable vapors like gasoline.

I use acid (aluminum brightener) on inside of tank.. put some in add a tick water.. slosh that shit Nd roll all around..rinse out.. there wont be a stich of anything inside..

kinda blows my mind , but then you gotta realize all the big automotive/ heavy equipment youtubers paid to get reach on places like facebook instagram etc , you can buy reach on youtube too , it's the old saying it takes money to make money . they spent money growing their channels till they got to a point where there's a return on their investments . and now when those people drop a video they have so many people who automatically watch their videos that it instantly puts them in everyone else's recommended feeds

LOL, It sounds like GoPro = GoPOS... Great tip, the larger nut taking longer to fill, and thereby heating up the threads better. I was ALWAYS rocking the oldies back when I was fixing up my house!! Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Everly Brothers, Ricky Nelson... Them cats were all minty as Frig. Can you TIG studs to the outside of the tank, and pull out them dents some?

It didn't do a very good job. Dish detergent with some Clorox cleaner or something. Still kinda off color in there but I didn't want to chance aciding it. Got most of the heavy shit, fuck it fuel IS a cleaner. Lol

If you're in doubt about fuel vapor run a hose from your vehicle to the tank and start it. The exhaust will purge the fuel vapor

Those are called “fat bob” tanks… 150 gallons still but much larger diameter instead of longer and skinnier… also much lower ground clearance

In 1980, trucks were still dealing with archaic length laws so it’s probably fairly short wheelbase, thus not much room between tanks and front drive axle

@@rickgowens184what I’m referring to is the distance from the battery box to the tank is huge. The tank is further back than on most trucks with that size tank. That wheelbase is still around 260 inches
