The HM-2 was my very first pedal, and I've got a lot of love for it as a result. When I first started playing guitar in 1991 or 1992, my parents got me an utterly clean amp with no breakup whatsoever, which was a problem for obvious reasons. They took me back to the guitar shop to get a pedal so I could have some distortion, and the guy at the counter recommended the HM-2 if I wanted to play metal. As such, my first venture into playing with heavy tones was with this beast, and I absolutely loved it. I eventually started getting into amp gain and ended up selling my HM-2 because I felt I no longer needed it. Later, when I had a better understanding of how things actually worked, I started kicking myself for not having kept the HM-2 to broaden my tonal options. When I looked into finding one, there weren't many to be had and the prices were ridiculous, so I put my dreams of reacquiring my first pedal aside. As a result, I'm really happy that they're reissuing a Waza version of the HM-2 and will probably end up buying one.

The HM-2 was also my 1st pedal. A Japanese one back in the mid 80's, I got for Christmas lol. It is hard to grasp the current love for this thing lol. I started building pedals a few years ago, and I dug up the HM-2 schematic, built it on a breadboard and said, nope, not going to bother making a circuit board and all that, it still sounds weak and stale (to me). I sold it for about $50 back in 1992 for a Metal Zone lol.

The thing is, this pedal had a unique sound even when not in "chainsaw" mode, almost a slightly saggier/buzzier Big Muff kind of tone, use to good effect by JK Broadrick and MBV. Alas, judging from Ola's demo, it seems that the Waza still has the anemic output of the original and the Behringer clone, which is probably why a lot of people dimed it back in the day just so they could be louder.

On all of their albums! There's a couple really good threads on UltimateMetal where Dan Swano posted about the setup they used on Nightmares Made Flesh and Resurrection Through Carnage. HM-2 into a Marshall DSL50 and Marshall 4x12, and at least an SM57, Royer Ribbon, AKG 414, and possibly others all blended together for NMF, and for RTC it was the HM-2 with a Digitech GNX2 multi FX, with a Marshall amp and cab emulation on it. Fathomless Mastery sounds like it was mixed with a traditional amp tone, but there's definitely HM-2 on it. And they used a 5 string baritone guitar for NMF too, as a fun fact. Put it away than once I owned a Marshall valve amp I plugged it in to a clean channel and boom! What a sound. Today Ive learnt to tame a Marshall dsl valve amp with just a guitar plugged In direct. Sounds so organic. As an 8ts/ 9ts metal player I can now get everything through a Marshall head, a Marshall 4x12 cab loaded with 25 watt green backs, a decent lead and guitar plugged right inside the amp. I occasionally use a Boss GE7 but that's it. I now have an embarrassing amount of redundant equipment. 😂👍

Stopped the video immediately to tell you this. I just came here because I have kind of a "depression day", which is actually unusual (but the pandemic, home office, basically nothing to do except the all day stuff...). My idea was, that there is nothing out there that can lift my mood. Wait! Nothing??? Yes! There IS something! And it's Swedish! Just wanted to tell you this. Cheers!

The tone on the track at the start sounded so good! I swear maxing it out is a myth when recording the albums...

ROCK! Damn I smiled through the whole video! I use to run mine through a Peavey Butcher back in the 80s... no noise gate, could turn it on until the song started due to the hiss... plan to order one immediately!
