The biggest thing about Mick and Jim's playing doesn't necessarily come down to the complexity of the riffs, but more on the smaller things like how they slide and bend, even how they mute certain things. These things make them pretty unique guitarists in their setting.

It does take some amount of workable musical knowledge. As most people don't have that it'll be hard to understand how it works, but it's basically like learning a new language: you study it, get your head around it, and when you're advanced enough you listen to a spoken text, and see if you can translate it on the spot.

@@AFK-Professor_Danger I think that mostly goes for the shreddy bits. I remember him saying that he kinda wings it while demoing the psychosocial solo, but in Stay Metal Ray's interview/rig rundown video at 33:30 he seemed pretty sure that he was playing it wrong. (and that online tabs are rarely accurate.) I think it's just a matter of some of Jim's parts (and some parts in general) being fairly subtle and buried in the mix. Those Jim playthrough videos are super cool to watch just because you hear a bit of the stuff that's not super obvious on the record.

I've never had a lesson or watched a tutorial. I picked up a guitar one day and just figured it out as I went along. I'm glad I'm not alone.

So impressive that u can learn a song simply by listening to this. I understand how it’s possible because I can do the same thing with the drums on simpler songs, but I just don’t have an ear for the guitar. And you learned it very quickly too. Your a boss!

As a drummer I can respect how much his ears are actually picking up. When you have enough skill, advanced mechanics start making sense to you audibly for you to translate. Humans are next level bro.

You should try any song off of 'Infest the Rats' Nest' by King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. A little anomalous compared to what you usually do, but the songs are fun to learn and play. Venusian 1, Venusian 2, Hell, and Self-Immolate are all songs from the album that I think you'd fuck with and enjoy learning/playing.

Not Ola, but an 11-56 set with a .058 on the low E is what Mick Thomson uses for Drop B. But if you want to be able to tune up to standard C#, I would keep the .056

I learned how to play guitar by playing along with my CD collection. After years, I got to open for some of the bands that literally taught me how to play in that way. Still can’t read music but I can play anything I hear.
