Will it start? Buying a 1973 Ford 4500 industrial diesel backhoe and fixing it up then start digging up stumps.

I bought a 1971 model 4500 used in 1985 for $8500. It has been one of the best investments I've ever made in equipment for my small acreage farm. Mine has Lucas electrical system, which indicates being of English manufacture.

Great to see you back Mike, don't sell that machine, they come in really do come in handy, good to see your Grandad is still running around with you as well, looking forward to see what you've got coming up, is that a pneumatic hammer attachment for the Ford Backhoe. Keep up the great work my friend. 🇬🇧

22:28 That's designed to be a "pivot" for the loader frame. The idea is that it's a fulcrum that transfers weight to the rear axle instead of keeping it all on the front. Those industrial fords are very, very stout machines. One of the absolute best out there, next to a 580 Case IMO. It may be pertinent to reseal that injection pump, they're a pretty simple one and if the seals dry rot they can put diesel in the crankcase. New paint, a seat, and some hoses and she'll be cherry!

Nice job. Great old machines,. I have two of them, you need to locate the pivot point of the power steering cylinder. You will see a pin sticking down out the bottom on the very front right of the bolster, below the rad. This pin will seize and bust the rod end off and or break the casting apart. No grease fitting on it. Remove , clean and put a hand full of grease on it. The other end plus linkages should be done as well. Pack the swing chain as well. Happy hoeing.

Hey Cletus get the gun and call the cops somebody's trying to steal our backhoe loader for $600 L.O.L. Man you got way lucky on that machine scrap up here in Canada's about 300 a ton from what I heard this week, that machine weighs way more than that a ton unprepared. I've just paid $1500 for a complete factory original Fordson major tractor in about the same condition without a backhoe and loader to stop it getting scrapped. luckily I got it running and driving easily to, it weighs quite a bit with a full set of factory cast wheel weights that pushed the price higher. Thanks for sharing, Take care

Definitely put tubes in ALL the tires. It’s my opinion that any not used on the highway benefits from having tubes. I would be shocked if they don’t have tubes in them already. Should have came that way from the factory.

I hope you don't mind a few suggestions. Since that parking lot has gravel on it, it would be a good idea to back drag all that gravel out of your digging area so it's not wasted. It can be put back in place after you're done backfilling. Some people would just make that whole a lot deeper and Burry that stump right where it was so that you don't have to find a place to dispose of it. But if you do have to transport it you should at least knock the dirt off of it so it's a lot lighter and it would take up less room wherever you take it to. Plus you had a full bucket of dirt to add to the weight. So you may not have enough dirt to backfill that hole.

If it's going to stay outside I would put a 5gl or a smaller bucket over the exhaust pipe so you don't get water into the engine it looks like a nice old Ford backhoe it looks like you have lots of hydraulic lines that needs to be replaced when you are pulling stumps out you might want to fill your front bucket with dirt or stone so you have extra weight on the front to keep the front wheels on the ground lol or just skup up the stumps with the front bucket

If the 4500 is the same as my triple nickel you will be able to turn the key counter clockwise one position it should heat the intake manifold and then turn it counter clockwise to the 2nd position will start the engine while heating the intake manifold but I am curious did they use it to dig graves because the bucket you were using looks very similar to the perfect size for graves? 😀🇨🇦

If your going to tackle the power steering, watch captain kleeman as he did one and its not like any other system I have ever seen in the fifty plus years of wrenching I ever did in heavy equipment. This is precision hydraulics that even germans clinch their pucker hole on. Once figured out then its kind of easy. Seriously watch Kleeman fix his and he failed a few times but his how to is as easy as falling off of a log. Well at least if your smart enough to get on the log. I am not a backhoe kind of guy.... excavators are my thing and with rubber tracks, then even blacktop and other stuff likewise is alright.

By the way the steering wheel knob is mounted wrong in the wrong place. It's supposed to go at the end of the spoke where it neets the steering wheel, and both bolts are supposed to be on either side of the spoke, not on the outside of the steering wheel. One of the tabs is bent down slightly which is supposed to hook over the outside edge of the steering wheel. My dad had his on wrong to until I fixed it. 😃
