"Having Maynard perform on the record wasn’t something that we planned on doing. We didn’t plan on having any guest on the record. But being a fan of Tool and A Perfect Circle, once Maynard was involved, it was just a magical thing for us. Honestly, when he first started working with us, he wasn’t supposed to sing with us. He was just working on the arrangements, riff structures, time signatures, and things like that. I don’t know if you’re a big fan of Tool’s music, but they’re really mathematical. I’ve been to their rehearsal space, and there’s this big chart that just looks like calculus-the way they write songs, it’s just crazy. It was good to have someone else who has different ways of writing songs, ‘cause everyone has a different way of doing it. He came in and we started working on this one song in particular, and he just grabbed the microphone and started singing along to it, and my jaw just dropped. All of a sudden our band sounded like Tool; it was just crazy. Then, probably two months later, we went in to record the album, and I went in to record the vocals on it, and I just kept hearing his voice, this recurring melody with his voice coming over it. So I called him and asked him if he wanted to come down and sing on the record, and he had no problem with it. Once he came in, I gave him sort of what I wanted the song to be about, and he wrote a couple of ideas down, and the next day he came in with all the lyrics written all out with blank spaces where my lyrics were supposed to be. He’s very professional like that. He wants everything set perfectly, which is the complete opposite to the way that I write, so it was cool. And then I went in and did my vocals over it, and it just seemed that our voices blended together pretty good." - Chino Moreno, DeftonesWorld

Honestly, Deftones was one of the most disappointing performances I've seen. It probably was a fluke because I've heard from everyone they are great live, but there was just no passion and no stage presence. To be fair, they had to follow-up Godsmack performing before them, but they just didn't live up to the excitement I had for them.

Recognized? lol....seems like an odd thing to say. And pretty subjective. Personally, I'd say Billy Corgan is more distinctive vocally. But, I'll definitely agree he's among the most recognized singers period. And in this overall genre, I definitely think Chino is the best vocalist, by far. Maynard is amazing, of course. But Chino's voice is altogether insane....and I actually prefer is more melodic voice. The brash banshee screams are cool for sure....but his smooth sensual silky new wave-y vocals are what do it for me. I think that side of his singing is perfectly exemplified on the Crosses project. I sure hope Crosses releases another album some time.....that one album they did is absolutely flawless.

Very cool! Be sure to check out some songs off of Koi No Yokan, it is arguably their best album start to finish, certainly my favorite. Very heavy guitar work as Stephen started playing 7/8 strings and there are some VERY Meshuggah-esque rhythms throughout that go HARD as f***! So good 🤌 It's sort of a perfect gateway for people who like the sort of heavy, djenty guitar work in Meshuggah but haven't acquired the taste for heavy vocals (screaming)

Maynard did this in 2000 when Deftones were making the album. He came in the studio to help listen and maybe offer advice. He ended up creating a vocal melody they loved and ended up asking if he'd sing in the song. He agreed. He also taught them about other time signatures and rhythms. I feel Rx Queen sounds inspired by him and maybe what he wanted them to expriment with. It sounds different to what they did on the album and before it. This was all before Tool came back after Ænima (1996). Lateralus came out in 2001. And he did A Perfect Circle for the first time in 2000. But that had demos dating to 1998-1999 I believe (please correct me) or even ideas Billy had already. My point is APC recorded in 1999-2000. So he was quite busy for a few years.

What makes this band great is their mastery of tension and ambience. This song is really unique in that the instrument driving the beat changes from verse to chorus to fill. At times the bass and guitar is pushing the song along while it feels like the drums are restraining you, holding you back. Then all at once the drums build up to driving in the verses and dying back in verses. This push and pull builds a tension that never truly gets released. The song ends on unfinished business. No real climax and release.

Still here haha. I was a bit confused when you mentioned Maynard I had no idea! It’s so great to listen to these soundtracks from my teenage years are being discovered by a professional like you. I love how they sound, I was listening to these on the gears I was building on festivals and live gigs. They are just from another world on good audio equipment. I also developed another layer of deep appreciation of how Maynard works. Such a unique guy! Have a great week!

@BillCoz4 жыл бұрын
@@sentientcardboarddumpster7900 Agreed, about No Quarter. The first 2 APC records were special though, thirteenth Step being my personal fav. It's a concept album that has a whole storyline that is very much close to my own personal experiences in life. The lyrics are TOO real and not at all 'phoned in', which many artists try to do with lyrics about topics when they haven't had the experience they are writing about personally. Maynard claims, tho I have not read his book, mainly I get this from his Joe Rogan interviews, to not have ever been addicted to hard drugs. That surprises me because his lyrics are so genuine. The chorus from the song Gravity, the last track, after the '12 steps' are completed, to me it's actually about relapsing. The bridge of the song goes: "calm these hands before they snare another pill then drive another nail down another meaty hole, please release me". The chorus part is: "high and surrendering to gravity and the unknown. Catch me, heal me, lift me back up to the sun. I choose to live". Gives me chills. They use shorter 'odd' time signatures for the first 2 choruses, I believe it's 6/8 or 3/4, or maybe 12/8, to cause 'tension' in the song. But then on the last chorus they play the same chord progression and basic melodies to a straight 4/4 to give 'resolve'. This tension-resolve thing fits right with the lyrics being sang by Maynard. The last chorus the 'resolve' is mostly noticed on the line "high and surrendering to gravity and the unknown...". The person feels relief and is giving in to the gravity of the drug/addiction, no longer wanting to fight it, giving into the unknown. Or they could be 'finding God' and giving into the 'gravity' of religion, a new addiction, IDK but the 'easier' timing/beat of the music flows smoother than the previous choruses. I just love how they use the timing/meter of the music to create tension and release that corresponds to the lyrics to cause greater effect.

I am a huge TOOL fan for 30 years and I love all your reactions and insight. I did recommend Avenged Sevenfold in another post - I don't know which would be the best for a reaction, so maybe try a newer one Avenged Sevenfold - Shepherd of Fire, though I really like alot of the older ones like Beast and the Harlot, Bat Country, Brompton Cocktail, etc. Give one of their songs a go. Regarding when you said early on that the song felt like Tool, I'm just gonna quote Chino rather than paraphrasing: "[Maynard] came in and we started working on this one song in particular, and he just grabbed the microphone and started singing along to it, and my jaw just dropped. All of a sudden our band sounded like Tool; it was just crazy.". You're not imagining things, you just catch them mid-air right away.
