That was professional sabotage. The high limit was bypassed, the water removed. The boiler was on which called for heat and caused the circular motor to run until the spring broke. The boiler ran dry and hot melting the plastic gauge cover, seen at the beginning. The gas valve wiring was melted because it was touching the boiler, and running dry cracked the boiler. Someone was praying for an insurance payment from a house explosion.

I’ve been in the service industry for years. I started when I was 17 doing residential oil burners, then HVAC, and at age 32 I went to commercial HVAC controls. I love these videos because they remind me of younger days and where I started. I like the fact that you show REAL jobs and the problems that come up. BTW, if the boiler froze I can only imagine how many other pipes froze in that house. Keep up the great work!

There are sadly many people happy to bypass safety systems. I've seen it on lifts (elevators) and mobile construction access platforms. We've had people have leg amputations when a safety system was bypassed on a roller-coaster - two coaster cars crashed into each other.

Thanks for the time you take to create and post up your videos Happy New Year.

Lady just bought the house? Sounds like inspector didn't look things through .... yikes. Having a bad boiler like that with no sign stating "do not run" or anything is ridiculous. Lucky you didn't get hurt.
@stanpatterson50334 жыл бұрын
Seems like that's a lawsuit there. If the sellers knew about it and didn't disclose prior to the sale. And somebody HAD to have known that the water was turned off... So, if she (or someone she represents) bought the house, and problem(s) with the heating weren't disclosed, the buyer party could go back on the selling party. And the inspector, if one was involved in the sale.

This is why you should call a professional to check out a unknown system before firing it up for the season. It is possible that someone shut off all of the water for maintenance then never turned it back on. Then someone fired it up and slowly lost water and wrecked the boiler. Or they shut off water because boiler was junk...lol. Oh btw it was amazing to me that Steve had the parts to that old Bell & Gossett pump in his stash of parts in his truck.

The noise after replacing the coupler is a result of the motor mounts sagging. The new coupler will fail soon too unless either the motor mounts or the motor are changed with the coupler.

I used to have a problem with those couplings not lasting very long. Turned out that the motor mount on the shaft side would sag from wear and the misalignment would break the couplings. Replaced the motor when I found this and all was good. I’ve replaced the mounts a few times. Comes off hard but goes back on easy.

The comments are all old.I really don’t know anything about boilers Except from watching videos. But I have a couple questions . Before you went there Steve you knew the the house just changed hands. Why would you start up the boiler before making sure all the valves are open and there is water in the boiler.After you disconnected the circulator pump Before you put a new coupler in why didn’t you check to make sure the circulator motor was functional. If this was the house you just purchased I’m sure you would have done these things.

For what it's worth, here's my 2 cents... Always replace the Bell & Gosset motor mounts when you replace the coupler. The rubber motor mounts sag and it causes misalignment of the motor/pump shafts. Notice how noisy the new coupler was? Also, do not add water to a hot boiler or it will crack.

@millomweb4 жыл бұрын
@@Nighthawke70 Was it deffo mice - or birds ?
@Nighthawke704 жыл бұрын
@@millomweb I doubt it was glass. Polycarbonate most likely. If it were glass and it deformed that much, then the paint on the furnace would have been burned off, and lots other damage would have been apparent. The boiler could not have gotten that hot, it's not an induced draft type and the gas mains were only running the normal household pressures. Industrial glass furnaces run a higher pressure and have an induced draft.

18 minute of your video..B1 receive 24V if Tstat call fir heat as the internal K1 relay coil gets energized and 1k1 NO switch to BR high limit anf 1k2 NO to C1-C1 pump closes on the L8148E aquastat ... And as I just mentioned earlier, if you have the pilot lit means PV of gas valve should get 24V no? Gas valve should have two separate solenoid coils one for PV valve and othrr one for MV ( main valve).. As you measured 24vac accross B1 and B2 earlier..

@danield.manziuc38603 жыл бұрын
Steven, exact same issue I had todl about I had with L8148E aquastat the other day.. But you did small mistake in my opinion and no disrespect to you at all..you had burner B1 and B2 energized ( 25vac accross), AND there pilot as lit! It meant that roll-out switch was closed as PV on gas valve was energized! The MV ( main gas valve solenoid coil may be burnt out!

Steven, do you ever watch UK heating KZbin videos ? I know you said this was an old system - but I get the feeling everything there is 70-90 years old ! Is there any modern-ish systems you work on - or do they not break down yet ?
@eaglevision9933 жыл бұрын
Same here from a German perspective. These systems look like 100 year old technology. Either they hold up pretty well (my old boiler was running fine after 40 years when I replaced it btw.) or there was no evolution at all in the heating segment. Just look at this circulator pump. The motor alone looks like it could drive an elevator....

Pat Papaleo , Usually the springs wear thru from the play between the two halves of the coupling and torque when it starts up. There are other types of couplings like the one that connects your motor and pump on your burner with a spring to take up the torque when it starts. They are very good circulators , still sold to this day and all the parts are readily available to repair them.
