Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the most divisive games in the entire Metal Gear Series. After a year and a half wait, it is finally time for me to throw my hat into the ring as we dive deep into the story and mechanics of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots!
Video too long? Have a look at this!

Act 2: 22:12
Act 3: 41:13

Just as to make sure it’s clear. I’m well aware that the commercials were supposed to be advertising in the Metal Gear universe as Praying Mantis posters are in the game. The point I was trying to make, admittedly poorly handled, was that the game just shoved that in your face and then never made a point out of that again. Wish the effect the patriots have on the general population was more prevalent in the story.

I wish they'd also play on TVs throughout the levels, like the radios in fallout. It's kind of a shame otherwise that you have to go on youtube to watch them all since they only play in the intro. Plus it's always fun in games when you're in the middle of a shootout and can hear the TV playing in the background, it makes the world feel lived in.

This game will always have a special place in my heart, my dad (R.I.P) got me into the MGS series back in about 2000. He was diagnosed with PPMS which resulted in his brain aging at an accelerated rate despite being fairly younger which reminds me of Old Snake. Playing MGS4 back makes me realize a lot and only solidifies my pops as a badass in my mind. Old or not. Great video!

The new Fox-Die prevented the epidemic not cause it. 55:50 - Only Screaming Mantis was explained as needing Nanomachines to control people, not Psycho Mantis. The Sorrow wasn't explained away with Nanomachines either. Only Vamp and Liquid Ocelot were explained using Nanomachines.

So firstly I want to say I enjoy your video even though I disagree with your viewpoint. One thing I wanted to take issue with though was your take on Raiden. PTSD is a real think, and all too often in media mental illness is something that can easily be dealt with with love. This isn’t how it works. Raiden seemingly getting better only to spiral out of control again is a much more realistic character arc. Raiden becomes a cyborg because he still has a childish belief in “Heroes”, he “doesn’t fear death” because he’s clearly suicidal and looking for a release. He finally faces his “nightmare he can’t wake up from” by defeating Vamp, comes to terms with his hero dying a very human death by growing old, and ultimately regains a sense of his humanity by accepting his responsibility to his family. I never hated Raiden in MGS 2 (my personal favorite in the series), but MGS 4 was the game that made me really love the character.
@JsReviews
@JsReviews 5 жыл бұрын
You know, you raise good points. I think my issue with Raiden in MGS4 was that it felt like too much of a response to MGS2 criticism, as opposed to real analysis on the mental health issue. Although when you raise those points, I see your perspective.
@DiamondDogApollo
@DiamondDogApollo 5 жыл бұрын
I volunteer with a suicide prevention group, and I’ve had interactions with veterans who suffer from PTSD and other mental health issues. What struck me so strongly about Raiden was how true to life much of his arc actually was once you strip away the fantastic elements. Starting off seemingly happy after getting home only to descend into depression and alcoholism. Being unable to connect to loved ones. Not being able to see themselves as human because of prosthetic limbs. A feeling that they had more to give on the battlefield, including their own lives. I’m not sure if Kojima is a better writer than he is given credit for, or if he handled Raiden with more care because I think he likes the character and never intend for him to become a joke. Obviously he tried to explore the same themes of trauma and PTSD in other characters with less success, The Beauty and the Beast boss characters being most notable. I do think that he caved to the fans in MGS 3 with the Raidenovich character, but I believe he wanted to do the character justice in MGS 4. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe I’m reading to much into it, but I’m glad I was able to give you a different perspective. Thanks again for your videos on the Metal Gear franchise. I’ve watched all but the one on MGS V (still working on Peace Walker), and I appreciate the work you put into them even if I didn’t always agree with you on some things.
@FeelingShred
@FeelingShred 2 жыл бұрын
@@DiamondDogApollo Yeah. The worst thing about trauma in general (some people call it "burnout", you see yourself unable to keep going, basically the same underlying mechanisms) is that you know something is wrong but you have no idea what the heck it is or how to fix it. You would be surprised how many small things in daily life can cause "trauma" (usually random events that happen unexpectedly, lots of people reporting symptoms after car accidents for example) and if you let these small traumas compound over time without ever healing them it will reach a point where you reach a breaking point. And in the middle of all this process (something that I consider the most traumatic aspect of it all) is that you notice how few people actually care about you in your close circle of social relations, friends, family etc (specially family) Noticing that the people that you considered close not caring at all about you (or even going out of their way to judge you or exploit you) is a deeply traumatic experience.
@FeelingShred
@FeelingShred 2 жыл бұрын
@@DiamondDogApollo Are you aware of the "Rewind Technique"? From my personal experience, ruminating on thoughts of the past and "reliving" the experience only made things WORSE. Funnily enough, I started noticing to feel more healing during periods when I would focus on purely nihilistic activities like playing videogames for example. Some kinds of videogames require extreme Focus and put you "in the zone" unable to devote yourself to side-thoughts or ruminating about the past (it's so fucking annoying when you can't stop that stuff) Which allows the mind to start healing and flushing some of the trash out
@FeelingShred
@FeelingShred 2 жыл бұрын
@@DiamondDogApollo Now, back to Kojima and the subject of "trauma" in his games, I notice a lot of similarities between him and Roger Waters. Both lost their fathers very young, under different circumstances. There's always a sort of "longing for a past when things were alright" in their works. Roger Waters lyrics for "Corporal Clegg" are brutal, talking about war veterans in UK attempting to turn it into humor for making it easier to process by the mind.

I don’t understand why MGS4 is so hated. It’s a Swan song. It’s supposed to be an end to Solid/Old Snake. It’s the end of his chapter there is no more Solid Snake he dies offscreen and his story ends. The reason the next two games focused on prequels was because there was still story to tell before the first Metal Gear. I think and you can agree or disagree MGS4 is a great game closing off a great story explaining to the best of its ability why everything went down.

I didn't have that much of a problem with the "reveal" that the Patriots were your companions in MGS3. The player's understanding when going into that game was seeing an event that can lead good people to make realisations that will make them do bad things. I understand that that cast of characters acted largely as comic relief in that game, but people who are involved in these kinds of conspiracies and perpetrators of horrific events in real life would be seen as different by people they've shared experiences with in the past. I'm thinking of that wholesome photo of Hitler feeding deer in relation to Zero, or OJ Simpson with Nicole and the kids in relation to Dr. Clark. It didn't rub me up the wrong way, I actually thought it was quite a smart move rather than introducing yet more characters into the MGS lore

Snake used CQB until MGS4, it's more for clearing rooms and for use with weapons, I presume he needed to revert to CQC as it offers tropes that CQB doesn't for guerilla tactics. Metal Gear Mk2 is a reference to Snatcher where the companion is called Metal Gear (explained in Snatcher as a homage to the Outer Heaven Uprising that happened 50 years prior). I presume at the end of MGS1 the 3 of them got back together for debriefing and Meryl went back to the special forces, with Snake and Otacon deciding to clear up the mess that Ocelot made by making the REX plans public

In MGS3, there were several codec calls from Paramedic about cloning and they were talking about cloning people like Snake. She said as a scientist, she would be interested. You see, triggering an alert phase means they magically knows where you are even if none of the enemies are near you. As for Raiden becoming a cyborg ninja by the Patriots, it was supposed to be explained in Metal Gear Solid: Rising, the previous title that was originally going to be a prequel and a gap between MGS2 & 4. After the title was changed to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and was going to take place after MGS4, Raiden' backstory was scrapped.

My favorite will always be a tie between Solid Snake and Big Boss, both for completely different reasons. I find it saddening that people really couldn't get over the fact that Raiden *is* a good protagonist, one with plenty of character development if you just pay good enough attention. Plus what I also dislike due to the fans is that Raiden always gets the short end of the stick when it comes to his endings. Metal Gear Solid 2's ending was optimistic, the other two.. This is my favorite Metal Gear game. Going from MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, and then MGS4 felt seemless. The ending of this game wrapped the series up perfectly in my opinion. Konami and Kojima could have ended the series right here and I would have been satisfied. I got obsessed with the plot of the games and enjoyed every single cutscene. Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the most polished video games I've ever played. I'm so thankful to be able to have experienced it.

I agree, one major issue that J seems to have is with how so many characters go back on what they said in the past. The problem is that this is how people really are in reality. Most people, especially when they have gone through traumatic events, have a very hard time getting away from it. In addition to that, most people who make decisions in times of duress or extreme euphoria don't continue with that same mind set. MGS4, while not perfect, show how dichotomous human nature really is. Snake and Maryl getting together after MGS1 then falling away from each other makes perfect sense from this perspective. They "fell in love" over a few hours because of all this crazy near death stuff, but after actually spending time with each other, it was obvious to both of them that they didn't really like each other that much. While I agree that a lot of the plot in MGS4 could have been more concise and some of it is a little on the nose, it's much more in line with how people really talk and act than we like to admit. I also feel like J missed the whole point of the commercials/tv shows at the start. You can't skip them because they cover a loading screen, and they tie into the story by showing how prevalent War and technology have become. They are so ingrained in society that there are regular TV commercials trying to recruit people into PMCs, and there are sports commercials meant solely to invite people to inject themselves with nano machines.

i liked the fact that the group we knew in "snake eater" turned into the patriots. its similar to the saying "absolute power corrupts absolutely". when given unchecked power to do whatever you want and near unlimited funds to do so, it can turn people into people we don't know. prime example: Maximillian Robespierre. he was one of the early leaders of what would become the french revolution. he was a intellgent lawyer who wanted to make life better for the people of the 3rd estate, aka, the common people. he helped author one of the greatest documents in history, "the declaration of the rights of man". dude was a champion against the excess and corrupt of the crown, the noblity and the clergy. but once the king and queen were dead, he stepped into the power vaccum, and plunged france into one of the bloodiest eras in french history, "the great terror". he had transformed into a power mad, egotistical tyrant who fancied himself as the new god of france. and in the end, he was destroyed by the very system he created. so yeah, i can buy major zero, sigint, and paramedic going dark. and i can see why big boss left the patriots. they weren't people he could trust anymore.

While Instant reloads were convenient back then, it made reloading/running out of bullets basically pointless. Not to mention MGS4 had an online mode (aka the BEST ONLINE GAME EVER MADE lol) and instant reload would have ruined that. Also, there could be the fact that they were going for a more realistic approach I'm guessing as the opening scene in MGS4 feels like something out of a war movie but I doubt this theory.

You forgot one of the most important fanservices of the game: the callbacks of Kojima's previous non-MGS work. For one thing it's way more subtle than the other ones which makes it more of an Easter Egg, but such thing was already done in previous entries, therefore I label it as fanservice as well. Take for instance MGS1 where you could find a poster of a game called Policenauts in Otacon's office, or in MGS3, where in one cutscene (unfortunately I don't remember which, but I think I saw it in your video) there's a small statue of a mech-like figure, which is Jehuty from the Zone of the Enders series. In MGS4, this tradition is kept, with some examples being one of Otacon's desktop wallpapers being Zone of the Enders 2's cover, or that same Policenauts poster being on the same place since MGS1. It's one of the aspects that I'm glad they maintained throughout the series. It would've also been cool to see more of Kojima's work like Snatcher or the Boktai games, but regardless, for me this is the best of the fanservice out of Guns of the Patriots.
