Old Photographs Glenluce Scotland

Old photographs of Glenluce, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. This village is in the parish of Old Luce in Wigtownshire, Scotland. It lies on the A75 road between Stranraer and Newton Stewart. Near to the village is Glenluce Abbey, a disused Cistercian monastery built in 1192 by Lochlann, Lord of Galloway. Following the Reformation it was abandoned, falling into its current ruinous state. Glenluce was served by Glenluce railway station from 1862 by the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway which provided a strategic link to Northern Ireland under British Rail. However, it was cut under the Beeching Axe in 1965.

JAMES SPROAT and his family, left Glenluce around 1845, and ventured to Argentina in south america. He was my great great grandfather. Thank you for this historic photos from the place in Scotland where my family came from.

James Sproat was still living in New Luce in 1901 as recorded in the 1901 census. He is listed as a Railway Signalman and mention is made that he is a leg amputee. He had 6 sons who all fought in the Great War. They all returned safely. He died in Ayr, aged 64, of apoplexy. He was my great, great, grandfather.

Thank you Kevin for your family info. When I visited Scotland in 2012, there was a David Sproat recorded in Edinburgh Castle who died in WWI in the Border Regiment.
