My god I was NOT on Su's side while watching this. I completely empathize with Lin, even while I know she's being bitter. Imagine you work so hard to match your mom's reputation as chief of police, and try to please her, and your teenage sister, who doesn't care about anyone but herself, just goes out committing crimes and doing whatever she wants. She gets you a scar on your face, blames you for doing your job, and then gets away with zero consequences because your "honorable" mom lets her slide. Everyone around Su suffers internally. Lin is bitter and guilty because she is there to watch her mom's own guilt over her decision, and she sees Toph retire as a result. Toph was clearly affected by this decision as well. But Su herself is not. She gets to travel the world, avoiding all consequences. She is literally never punished or taught about the wrong of her ways- everything goes perfectly for her. She does everything she wants, gets the family she wants, and the life she wants. Then, when you finally see each other again, she blames you for not making amends and doesn't apologize for anything that happened in the past. Lin is bitter, but Su is also a really clueless and privileged person. It's good she worked things out with Toph as she said, but she refuses to acknowledge anything Lin is saying.

The line about how Lin is bringing up old shit while her sister changed is dumb. Yes people change, but what does that supposed to give the offended party of those crimes? Su has not suffered any consequences in her life. She gets to steal from a store, scar her sister, get sent out to discover herself, raise a family, build a city, all the while her sister gets scarred, gets berated by their mom for doing her job, gets dumped by her boyfriend, becomes lonely trying to live up to what her mother was supposed to be, has all this trauma happen but Suyin gets to be happy and doesn't have to take any responsibility for her crimes because to her it was a long time ago and she moved on. She acts like Lin doesn't have a right to be upset and didn't apologize for doing anything she did when she was younger including scarring her. Lin does everything she's supposed to do and gets nothing for it. Suyin does the wrong thing and everyone loves her. To imply Lin is somehow in the wrong, is crazy.

@@sharsasuke01 That has nothing to do with anything though. That comes with the implication that it is okay for her to not have to deal with any justice despite robbing a store, scarring her sister, and being in the epicenter of a police cover up...because she built what she has "from scratch." It's not like she started from zero either. She lived with her grandparents and her husband is a major factor in this. She got to travel the world, do all this shit; Lin was doing her JOB and she got promoted because she's the best. Even if you took that out of the equation, Suyin is still wrong in her attitude towards the entire situation. There's a difference between being a "little kid" and being a "little shit". Su Yin was the latter. Robbing people is not what little kids do. Plus she was like 15-16? At that point you ought to have a bit of sense by then. Even if it's just a little.

Lin was just doing her job, following the rules and trying to follow in her mom's footsteps and what did she get? Her mom ignored her, her sister giving her a permanent scar and the break-up of the family. I got so mad when Toph chewed her out for doing her job. Like was Lin supposed to let Suyin go after being the accomplice to a robbery? Meanwhile Suyin got away clean, free to travel the world, become a pirate, and use the proceeds to build and become the leader of a luxurious city, while also making a happy family. She basically got the perfect life All the while having never apologized to Lin or even Toph for what she did. Yes, she never actually apologized. Both her and Toph decided to "put those things behind them", and her callous attitude towards Lin shows that she never had any intention to ask for forgiveness But you know how shows like this like glorifying rebels. Like how in season 1 and 2 the show tried it's hardest to paint Tenzin as a gloomy stick-in-the-mud who didn't know what he was doing with Korra when it was Korra who was just being a selfish impatient brat
@tazkol3 жыл бұрын
legend of korra really is the inferior avatar series. the main character has no real struggle to gain power it's just handed too her, she gets little to no actual character growth and then you get dumbass storylines like this.
@nocebo57923 жыл бұрын
@@tazkol I'd say it's even worse, most of the time Korra gets worse (character wise) and if season 1she's basically forcing herself on mako and destroying his relationship because she couldn't control her puss, but mostly doing the right thing (though throwing fits and beying irresonable, but you know she's female teenager, it's realistic and not over the top), the other seasons she's not really being hero but rather being like communism - solving problems that she herself caused with her stupidity and bad decisions (her uncle, opening portals causing zaheer to get free, zaheer killing earth queen causing kuvira etc.). I still enjoyed the show, but Korra is such toxic person that it's hard to feel too bad for her when she gets the L's, and the plot of her commics after the show story could be sumarised in one sentence - "WE'RE PROUD LESBIANS AND IF YOU GOT PROBLEM WITH THAT UR BIGGOT", with one of the most of ouf nowhere ships ever (it's only teased very slightly in s3, not much more with s4, and they both have legitimate reasons to hate each other guts from s1 & s2) :/

I like how they write the backstory in a way that makes Lin's grudge understandable but also shows her needing to let it go. She was scarred (literally and metaphorically) by Su's actions, and she watched their mother suffer the guilt of the cover-up. And she also saw Su get off with no punishment for her actions and go on to live a charmed life. The anger and resentment are totally understandable. But at the same time, Su has grown up and become a better person, and holding on to the bitterness for so long isn't healthy.

Yeah no. She shouldn't get to move on that easily. You don't get to hurt and traumatize someone, not take any responsibility and simply tell them "I moved on, get over it".
@CalliopePony3 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree that Su can't tell Lin when it's time to move on. But Lin has clearly been bottling her anger up to the point that it's become unhealthy. When she looks at her sister all she can see is the bad kid she used to be. Her anger over what happened has blinded her to the point that she can't look at the situation objectively and see that Su isn't the same person any more. Lin doesn't need to forgive Su for what happened (though it's nice that she's able to eventually), but she does need to learn how to deal with her anger instead of bottling it up and letting it eat away at her. Having the fight was a good thing because it let her release a lot of the negative feelings she'd been holding on to.

Lin was still angry because, on her perspective, Su was off the hook way too easily after performing robberies and scarring Lin despite all she wanted was avoid of Su getting into trouble, and worse yet, as she thought her childish and reckless actions would perhaps lead her to a life of misfortune, Su instead had a better life than Lin ever had (traveled the world, got a wonderful family, became a leader of a city) without ever actually recognizing what she did to Lin and properly apologizing, instead treated like something minor and forgetful. Can you imagine how Lin must have felt all those years, every time she looked in the mirror, she would see the scar left by her sister, reminding her how trying to be a protective sister and upright policewoman failed miserably, while Su was living life? Her grudge was justifiable and a confront was necessary, shame that Lin was the one getting more the beating... On the other hand, yes, Lin getting angry at Opal was unnecessary and I'm glad the managed to "peacefully" solve this.

Su was in the wrong, she committed crimes and wasn't punished for it and was sent away to live with her rich grandparents. Lin became a cop and only wanted to impress Toph and seems all she got was flack from Toph instead.
